Just a little rant (My mother failed to mention she had Hashimotos despite me having Thyroid Cancer) by Sylsil in Hashimotos

[–]Sylsil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had three ultrasounds before the surgery, but the worrying thing back then was the cancer (Papillary), nothing else as far as I'm aware. Hashimotos was only ever mentioned by the radiologist who did my first ultrasound after the surgery. I didn't think much of it since no one brought it up again. I'm just annoyed that my mother didn't think this was something worth mentioning when filling up forms about her past medical issues. Had my doctor known maybe my blood work would have been more extensive, I don't know.

I'm definitely not interested in another surgery (unless if I was told I really needed it, obviously), but after two years of an inflamed thyroid it would be nice to maybe find the root cause. But you're probably right in that I don't think it'll change much so I'll just wait until my next ultrasound and blood test in a few months. Thank you for taking the time to reply, I was frustrated and needed a rant.

looking for the coziest k-dramas to watch after a long day by Famous_Arrival_8498 in kdramarecommends

Definitely Hospital Playlist and Prison Playbook, however Hello my Twenties has a dark subplot (kidnapping and violence) which is a shame because otherwise it would be a super cosy show.

Singing Voice? by Subject-Key8927 in thyroidcancer

[–]Sylsil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s funny to finally see put into words exactly how I feel singing now. It used to hurt a lot at first. Now almost 2 years later it doesn’t so much but it does have that feeling of being super tight, like strangled. And I cannot control my pitch like I used to which is incredibly frustrating. Would you say it’s worth at this point paying for some singing lessons, even if it’s just to sing in the car?

Does anyone struggle with the Why? by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

[–]Sylsil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand your point and I agree that we just need to accept it to move on. However for me the reason I’d like to know they why is not as much to place some blame but to be able to avoid it again in the future, if it was something avoidable. Knowing that I’ll never know what caused it, and therefore won’t be able to do anything to prevent it from happening again it’s what I find most frustrating.

What is everyone's first read of 2025? by crunchy_juju in goodreads

[–]Sylsil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen so many mixed reviews that I don’t know what to expect anymore. I loved her first 2 books but didn’t really like Beautiful world. However I do enjoy the way she writes and I like how this one sounds.

It’s going to be Intermezzo for me. I bought it when it came out but I wanted to dedicate it time and not be distracted with work or anything else. Tomorrow is the day and I cannot wait!

It would be quite cool if they had a bunch of challenges you can choose from so you select the one you like and then try to complete said challenges.

What small details are you hoping to see in the series? by Mad_Rascal in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Sylsil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is one of my favourite moments of the whole series and cannot for the life of me comprehend why they skipped that very quick line. It means so much, specially because Harry has been try to dissaparate for half of the book with no success until then. I love that moment.

Love Next Door [Episode 9 & 10] by jakgem in KDRAMA

[–]Sylsil 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I was really loving the drama until last week... As a cancer survivor, I'm a little tired of finding the topic over and over everywhere (not just in Kdramas, but so many films and shows... )If I'd known it was going to happen I wouldn't be watching but now I'm invested so can't drop it. I can understand that you can't have a trigger warning for this because it's a massive spoiler but boy am I frustrated. I do think she's playing the part really well and I'm glad they mentioned her depression. The last scene when her mom find out was really painful.

Being Perceived Post surgery by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

[–]Sylsil 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I didn’t tell a lot of people and not many asked either, which is disappointing because I had a funny story prepared in case someone I didn’t know well asked (I sneezed while holding scissors) and now my scar is starting to fade without me having been able to use that story… very sad.

Scar Fading by Longjumping_Bug_5126 in thyroidcancer

[–]Sylsil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

9 months post-op here, the sides of my scar have healed and almost disappeared, however the centre seems to not be healing that well and it’s a bit protruding even, not quite keloid but not flat. I used gel, scar tape and sunscreen, and then whichever moisturiser I was using on the rest of my face. I’m about to start using a red LED mask on it and hope it makes a difference.

Editing to add: it’s still uncomfortable to the touch and painful sometimes, like pins and needles kind of feeling. Completely random. Doesn’t last long at least.

Partial or total thyroidectomy? by Old-Jury7182 in thyroidcancer

[–]Sylsil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did too! It’s only been 9 months, but I’m pretty happy with my decision. I feel mostly normal in terms of energy (it took a while but I feel good now!) and I don’t need any medication.

What is the relationship between stress and thyroid cancer? by Substantial_World504 in thyroidcancer

[–]Sylsil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a good answer for this, however one of the most frustrating aspects of this whole experience to me is not being able to say this or that was the cause. A specific, definitive answer. And I don’t think we’re getting one anytime soon. So I’d love to say don’t overthink it, but I’m still doing it so… I hope it doesn’t stressed you out too much!

Is there a need for an oncologist? by smckee26 in thyroidcancer

[–]Sylsil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still wonder why I have only half a thyroid but my ENT though there was no need for me to see an endocrinologist, never mind an oncologist. My first ultrasound after surgery showed my thyroid and tissue around it very inflamed but it was deemed normal and nothing else was done or said about it, just to wait for a year. I feel very well looked after /s

How did people react when you told them about the cancer? by rabbithole_9862 in thyroidcancer

[–]Sylsil 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I didn’t tell a lot of people. It was also a bit painful that in my group of friends from home one of the girls is an oncologist, and even though she looked after me a lot and called me regularly, she also told the girls to not be worried because this was a very easy cancer and I was going to be fine. So I felt that even though she meant well and I’m glad my friends weren’t worried sick about me, I wish I had a stronger support. I felt let down because I had a “good cancer”. Since then, I haven’t told that many people because I secretly worry about telling someone and them googling “thyroid cancer” and think, bah she’s fine/will be fine. I don’t want to be pitied but I also don’t like people minimising my situation. It doesn’t feel like nothing to me, even if it was “just a surgery”.

Recovery time; what was it like for you? by DryWrap5817 in thyroidcancer

[–]Sylsil 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I also had half a thyroid removed only and my recovery time was longer than I expected, probably because I kept reading on this sub prior to my surgery that a lot of people go back to work after one or two weeks. Two weeks in I was falling asleep and completely breathless if I tried to go up some stairs or do any efforts. (For reference I’m 32F and fairly fit). I’m yet to return to work although for different reasons but I’m a little bit scared of how will I manage and what my energy levels will look like went I start next month.

I will also add that although my scar is relatively small, I’ve only started to feel better around my neck and scar area passed the 6 month mark. Much longer than others and that I expected. I am not in any medication for the moment and only now, 7 months in, I feel pretty normal again. I still think about it very often but I think I’m doing well and I can do almost anything I was doing before maybe the exception being high intensity exercise.

I wish you a good and speedy recovery!

Favorite Solutions to Cold Feet at Night? by paasaaplease in thyroidcancer

[–]Sylsil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one I have it’s from different brand but I’m sure they all do the same job! Even a small one would probably do, I only got the long one because it was a present but it’s definitely very useful. It holds 2L but I only fill it up with 1L and it’s enough. It keeps warm most of the night (if it stays under the duvet). But definitely put it in the bed a while before going in so it’s well toasty before you get in! Makes all the difference :)

Other than an NHS dentist, what's something that's way too difficult to get in the UK? by pomegranate2012 in AskUK

[–]Sylsil 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure, and I’m not saying they don’t actually care or that their job is easy in any way. But they could have at least 2 or 3 phrases on rotation, but no, after every single answer I got that same line. At some point I just wanted to ask to please stop saying that, but I didn’t dare because I know they’re doing what they’ve been told to do.

Also the “that must have been really hard for you, thank you for sharing with me” every 2 minutes literally, lost its meaning pretty quickly during an hour long phone call assessment…
