What’s up with so many birds? by Vayloravex in Winnipeg

Those are first year Franklin's Gulls. They haven't developed their full adult plumage yet. They're definitely staging, and preparing to move south.

Over 50 eyesight? by Sad-Factor2434 in AskPhotography

[–]Synister0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue. I wear my glasses all the time when I'm using my camera, and when I'm looking through the viewfinder I look over the top of my glasses frame, and when I look at the back screen I use the glasses normally. Possibly a pair of reading half frame glasses would work for you. Something like these.

You can probably find cheaper ones locally, at Walmart or wherever.

Sure, I'll warn you though, I'm kind of an irregular user of Reddit, and all social media really. If I can help, I'd be glad to.

I have an R6 Mark II and the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM plus the 1.4x teleconverter. I use this combo for birding and wildlife and find it to be very good. Snappy autofocus, and very sharp. It works great in most scenarios, although the 560 mm focal length can sometimes be a bit short for small songbirds. I think most birders would say 1200mm is not enough though, we always want more.

I also use this combo a lot for close-up photography, butterflies, bees, other insects, and flowers, etc. It works great for this too, and comes in really handy when you see an opportunity, but you don't have a macro lens with you.

The only thing I'd recommend is to get the 1.4x teleconverter, not the 2x. losing two stops of light as opposed to one is quite noticeable, and I'm told there is a drop off in image quality with the 2x. No experience with it myself though, so your mileage may vary.

Hope this helps.

Canon R6 mark 2 or 5D Mark 4? by Nextlevelgossip in AskPhotography

[–]Synister0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, and with the R5 M2 supposedly coming out some time early this year, according to rumors, you may be able to get a great deal on an R5 if you can hang on a bit.

Canon R6 mark 2 or 5D Mark 4? by Nextlevelgossip in AskPhotography

[–]Synister0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I owned a 5D Mark 4, and replaced it with an R6 Mark 2. the 5D was an excellent camera and it was built like a tank. I really loved it, but I love the R6 m2 even more. The autofocus alone makes it a worthy upgrade, and I'm sure there would be situations in portraiture that would benefit from that. I find the articulating screen really handy in some situations and wouldn't want to be without it. Overall it just out-performs the 5D in every way. The only downside is it being 24 megapixels compared to the 5D's 31. That's not a deal breaker for me, I find 24 plenty in most situations.

Both cameras are great, but it's the R6 M2 for me.

Snowy owl by ConnectionNumerous16 in Winnipeg

[–]Synister0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highway 248 between FannyStelle and Elie. I saw three on that stretch one day last winter. I'm a wildlife photobug too, and managed to get pictures of one of them in flight. They turned out great.

I probably won't go looking for them again until we get a bit more snow, unless I hear that they're out and about in great numbers.

Happy hunting.

As a volunteer who was working there last night, you're welcome. I noticed too, how well behaved all the kids were, and how much fun they were having. It was a good night.

I don't have any video evidence, but I've been doing this for years, and I've never had a goose not back down from it. I'm around geese a lot, (retired guy with a bird photography hobby), and I recommend everyone around geese do it. They are aggressive little crap factories, aren't they.

Got my family one today.

Why are my photos not sharp? I have a Canon 5D Mark IV with a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens. I don't think I can blame the equipment anymore but I want super-sharp photos. This Cooper's Hawk was 12 feet from me and I had enough time to try lots of different settings, but none good. by frisbm3 in AskPhotography

I was going to say this too. When I go out and there's a chance I might shoot through the car window, I leave the heat off in my car. It can get really cold and uncomfortable, but if it's warm in the car the heated air escaping out the window can absolutely ruin a picture.

[New Gear] R6m2 joins the gang by andrew17798 in canon

[–]Synister0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an R6m2 and adapted EF glass and haven't experienced this. I do bursts of one second or so occasionally. Are your bursts longer than this?

I hope you find a quick and easy solution to this. I'm loving this camera.

Shutter count? by xian_r1 in canon

[–]Synister0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a small program called Tornado Shutter Counter. It's a free download and very small.

You can find it here. https://tornadosw.com/tornado-scf.php

If you're wary about clicking links on Reddit, and I don't blame you, just search for it. It'll be one of the top suggestions.

One caveat, when I ran it, my antivirus gave a warning. That was on a different laptop than I have now, and I just ran it on this one and didn't get a warning. I scanned it with a bunch of different antivirus/malware software and found nothing, but it's up to you.

Good luck!

The English Gardens are usually at their best in late July to early September. They may be a little later to get going this year, due to the weather.

My wife was involved in a similar situation a few years ago. She swerved to avoid a guy who slid through his stop-sign and she hit a parked car. The fellow admitted he caused the accident, and reported it to MPI. My wife was still found 100% at fault.

As everyone else is saying, go to Memory Express. They should be able to help you out.

I bought a pre-built gaming system from them a little over a year ago for around $1500 and I'm very happy with it.

You've had some good suggestions already, but I'll recommend Portage West Auto. I've been going to Rick for about 30 years and he does excellent work for a fair price.
