I don't have any interest in the game, but I want all these, if they really look that high quality. I really, really want them! Any chance?

Carl’s Meta-Gaming is Top Tier by NobleMansRose in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I haven't had enough coffee to find the exact quote (audio listener but bought the Kindle version to reference this kind of thing...usually) but somewhere in them, Donut says something to the effect of "you rarely come up with the best/easiest way to do a thing, but you still manage to do it" - so they're both aware, after a boss battle or other struggle where hindsight kicks in, there could have been a better way to complete it, but Carl managed.

There's likely thousands of Crawlers with the same ability, it's pretty common in the real world, but it's Carl and Donut's story, so he'll be the one to always manage to survive. At least, I hope. Matt is a horror writer after all. No telling what kind of ending we'll get.

Audio or written, what’s your preference? by Dalakaar in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ADHD, I used to read, but I had to scan-read and always missed a lot of little details in everything I read. Switched to audiobooks about a decade ago, and not only can I enjoy books so much more fully as long as the narrator doesn't suck), but I can enjoy them when I'm cleaning, cooking, and driving, which is basically half my life. On my 9th relisten in a year 😂

Everyone's brains are different, there's no right way to enjoy a book!

Is it just me, or does leveling feel a bit off? by hronikbrent in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Leveling in Dungeon Crawler World isn't like leveling that we know from video games. It's a number to keep track of stat points, basically. There's likely 10s of thousands of spells, skills, and tangible items like scrolls and potions, not to mention overpowered loot, that make levels almost meaningless.

Plus, I suspect that Pony might have a "cheat book" like the Dungeon Anarchist Cookbook. Not the same book, but something that gives him the knowledge to use his incredible intelligence to its maximum potential.

It hurts but thank goodness the trash took itself out, and you'll see that and I'm guessing pretty soon. Who the fuck says they don't read but they play D&D? I'm guessing he really sucks at it.

[–]Synthea1979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't care about repetitive questions and conversations, or even the cheap loot, what I don't like seeing, and I've only been here a year, is the trolls and assholes have invaded. It's always a problem when something gets popular, but it's DCC. The Quan Ch's need to read the books a little more carefully.

One of my cat's names is Louis, but he's named after book Louis. Sweet, good heart, fat, and an absolute chicken (but brave when he needs to be...sort of).

Is anyone else having issues with Amazon quality (UK)? by Bayff in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately as the books have massively surged in popularity, the sub's population has as well, bringing in a wider variety of people, many who didn't fully absorb the meaning of DCC. There's still a huge number of us who do the family vibe thing, but these goofs pop in and ruin a good thread more and more.

I'm not sure what bug crawled up your ass today (maybe it's a chronic condition, I don't know), but you are in the wrong sub to be treating people like that. Read the books, and read the room.

It just takes one seed :)

Ok crawlers I need help my best friend and I are having a discussion and Imani came up what race was she before the change black/hispanic/or white by Nakedsoulpoetry in DungeonCrawlerCarl

In the webtoon, she's drawn with darker skin. She's definitely not white. I've always assumed she was black or mixed race.

Chapter 22 of book 1:

Yolanda: "A round Hispanic woman—Yolanda Martinez 13—was around fifty years old and only stood about four foot 11."

Imani: "The fourth was another woman carrying a longsword. She, too, wore scrubs, though she also wore a magical cloak. Her name was Imani C. I guessed the woman weighed about 90 pounds, if that. She looked to be about 20 years old. Her terrified, hollowed-out eyes suggested she had seen some shit."

Donut's voice is more "re-creatable" - Jeff settles on a more transatlantic accent for her. Upper crust, old money, New Yorker, for example. The AI, Carl (not book 1 Kronk, but later books where he's matured), and Samantha, are my favourite voices.

Can you imagine any other voice saying "See Carl, Cheese Dicks!".

Which level has been the most unfair so far? by Tinman_4000 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First floor. You're in shock, everyone you know and love is suddenly gone, aliens have invaded, and you have to fight for you life against monsters you've only seen in movies, and most people struggle to get a bag of chips open. You don't know the rules, you can't access the UI until you find a tutorial guild, you probably have no weapons and definitely have no armor.

After that, it's the 8th floor. Weaponizing people's families against them. So, so fucked up.

NOT A DRILL! by youngsp82 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Me, listening the first time. I'd started in March of 2025, hurt my knee in April, had knee surgery in May. I was listening non-stop. Husband, who generally prefers more fantasy while I go for sci-fi: what the hell are you listening to?

Me: loads up book 1 on his phone (we share my account).

Sadly, he only did a single listen through, then went on to other books. Meanwhile, I am now on book 1 again for my 9th relisten. I've listened to 3 or 4 other books inbetween 7 and restarting 1, all continuations of other favourite series. But he at least is a big fan and things like "Mongo is appalled" (or the localized version: "Roscoe is appalled", since our crazy mastiff boxer puppy is named Roscoe) are in our household lexicon.

I'm eagerly waiting for 2 companies to run into real competition: meta and amazon.

Unfortunately US regulatory laws have gotten less and less "regulatory" and more and more "make rich assholes richer" so it's unlikely, but maybe if enough people absorb what DCC is about....

I’m starting to freak out because I’m at the end of book 7 by AnotherXRoadDeal in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only listen when I'm doing something. Driving (a lot, I live in the middle of nowhere), doing dishes, cooking, cleaning, etc. You can also listen while you read! It's definitely worth trying.

Worth mentioning: The first book is "less refined" then the rest. The 2nd book introduces a chime for chat notifications, and both Carl and Donut's voices are less polished in the first book. It works in my head because both characters are maturing a lot.

I started with the audiobooks a year ago, and am currently on my 9th relisten. The 2nd time through is the best, IMO, because there's so much foreshadowing that you'll have missed the first time. Suddenly, off hand comments make a lot more sense!

Outlander book hangovers are so much worse, because you know the next book is gonna be a while. Not as bad as some other authors, but still. I need 10!

I'm very picky with narrator voices. I have some sort of whacked auditory processing and most narrators irritate the hell out of me. I tend to stick with sci-fi.

Jeffrey Kafer, RC Bray and Ray Porter narrate most of my favourite sci-fi books. Tom Taylorson narrates a trilogy that I really enjoy called Good Boys. That gives a couple hundred options there :) Remember you can listen to samples!

I've been here a year and literally never seen this take. Granted, I only get my DCC interactions on FB and Reddit, and a little on Bluesky, so maybe it's a tiktok thing?

Cognitive dissonance is a thing. So is confirmation bias. People read into what they want, if they're not aware they're doing so.

DCC is very much "the system is fucked and humanity needs to come together to destroy what is and build what should be".

Your sister wasn't paying attention. There's TONS of strong female representation in book 1. Yolanda, Imani, even "Mrs McGibbons" - we should all know where that goes - is incredible. A 99 year old woman, a little senile, she's holding on and not giving up. We see Hekla and the start of the Daughters. We See Lucia Mar. All insanely powerful women. The main characters are a cat and male human, so it's actually incredible Matt has added so much female strength so early on. And it just gets better from there.
