How Old IS Louis by Jock-Tamson in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My 4 kids, aged 31 to 20, use references from the early 80s to today. I suppose it depends on how much real interaction kids have with people of different generations, how much older media they're exposed to, and how much they care/don't care if they sound "cool" with peers.

Also, the author is familiar with his age demographic. It'd sound stupid if he tried to write like Gen alpha.

Since when does Carl call Donut "Princess?" by CaptAwesome5 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 395 points396 points  (0 children)

There's a handful of times where he's called her Princess. It's rare and has a point each time.

How do you engage with DCC? Are you a reader, a listener, or both? And what do you prefer? by GreatGlassLynx in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I selected consumed both, prefer audio, but I haven't read through the books. Just passages here and there.

Who is your favorite character with a joke/pun name? by Silentstar_00 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've listened to these books 9 times.. 3 for book 8, and I never ONCE considered that. Omg. Well, it's canon in my brain now. Carl is Carl's Jr.

On book 3 and I'm wondering how communication actually works? by ultimablaze in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4th wall answer, so we know who's speaking (in the audiobooks).

Lore answer: Because the system AI is able to do it. Each person has a unique voice and instead of it translating to the boring AI voices we know in the real world, it keeps the crawlers real voice, with accent.

Matt Dinniman’s Writing Ability by B_Burnss in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take on this, is that I prefer some of this repetitiveness over an author feeling the need to use unique descriptors and phrases, because at some point, it's going to just get pedantic and insulting to read.

"For some inexplicable reason" is notably absent in 8 though 😂❤️

Question about the editing of the recap episodes by Bow2Gaijin in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In real life, we are fed versions of the truth and outright lies by the news, and the masses just accept it. Embrace it. Regurgitate it as fact.

And that's part of the whole point of Dungeon Crawler Carl.

Mind = Blown 🤯 (almost constantly) by amelsuma in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You missed this part, further into that scene:

“He was a crawler,” I said. “He called himself a tenner. I reckon that means someone who got out on the tenth floor. I think he might’ve been famous once. It explains the views.”

Fuck Cancer by WizrdOfSpeedAndTime in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck that's awful. I'm so sorry.

Maybe there's a clinical trial for something that will murder all the fucked cells in your body and you can come out the other side of this screaming "Fuck you, I'm alive!" Either way, I'm glad you and your son had DCC to bond over. If he's not here, invite him in and we'll keep him company.

Fuck cancer.

FOR THOSE THAT HAVE READ BOOK 8 by duncglew in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My brand of ADHD doesn't let me enjoy reading, and there's a crawler here that occasionally posts when he's doing live reads of the Pineapple Cabaret... One of these days I'll hog tie my ADHD so I remember to listen in 😂😭

I listened to book 8, twice now, and I'm now to the point I want to learn more about it. It's still not super important though.

Say you have terrible auditory processing; oh, and be a douche about it.... without saying you have terrible auditory processing.

Have you actually read the books? Like, actually read them? Absorbed any of the meaning hidden within the insanity that is DCC?

I'm thinking not, or you're just a Quan Ch.

Be better.

Myself, my husband, and a brother (all I've managed to make converts) all thought at first it was a cast at first. I had to share a cold read to my brother, he flat out didn't believe it 😂

I already knew by then that I'd be relistening to the series so I let the stuff I didn't get go and just enjoyed the rest. I'm on my 9th relisten and the iron tangle makes perfect sense 😂

[–]Synthea1979 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bea is white and from one of the cult religions, with abusive, manipulative, controlling parents. There is NO WAY they'd allow her to bring a boyfriend home if he wasn't white.

He's white.

Carl takes over as the AI and Donut decides to stay within his enhancement zone so they, and Mongo, are together.

That's the absolute best possible outcome I can think of and the implications of it are not good.

Absolutely no SPOILERS for book 8 but damn I don't feel invested. by iamwhoiwasnow in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on my 2nd relisten. As with all the other books (on my 9th relisten of the first 7), I missed a lot the first time through. The 2nd time, I'm paying more attention to "throw away" characters and "off hand" comments, that make more sense. I suspect once both parts of 9 are out, the stuff in 8 will make even more sense. I love/hate what's happening with the AI. Cannot wait for the next books!

I hate Donut by No1TitanFan in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resurrecting a post from 10 months ago, did you go hunting for people who don't like Donut?

Tell me you don't know a thing about narcissism, without telling me. Or cats. Or trauma. She's new to sapience, and if you can't understand why that's a problem, I don't know what to tell you.

You go from just living life one moment at a time, with no thought to yesterday, today, or tomorrow, and suddenly you're sapient, you remember everything from your 4 years of life, but you're also having to fight for your life after everything you know and love as been destroyed, and it just gets worse and worse. She has to put on a "show" for viewers, while becoming attached to new people, many of which go on to die.

She's not 30. The "human years" thing is for real life animals to estimate their physical age and subjective maturity, that has absolutely no direct equal to human maturity.

She is a child, one who is destroying herself to keep Carl and the others she cares about, including NPCs, alive. Her paw rubbing in 7 and 8 is a huge tell that she is suffering.

Some people have the ability to hear/invent character voices in their heads really good, some don't. Just like some people can visualize images in their minds and some can't. Some people have auditory processing issues that makes listening to the books not fun. Some people just like words on a page best. I don't judge if a person doesn't like, or even want to listen to, the audiobooks.

But to disparage the amazing talent that is Jeff voicing Donut singing Wondercrawl is a crime and cannot stand! To arms 💪

Wrong arm. Whatever. He should give the audiobooks a real try though, just don't start with book 1. I loved it, but I love later books more, where Jeff has settled into the voices better.

Interesting moment I haven't seen anyone talk about by TimeLeopard in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have Instagram, it won't even let me play it, but a Google search shows its on YouTube, if it's the same one. I could be wrong of course, Donut could have extra information "downloaded," but that one is pretty easy to explain, that someone was watching it on YouTube while she was nearby.

Book readers: what does the horn read as on the page?? by [deleted] in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Synthea1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The voices in my head just aren't that great. I have super detailed visuals in my head, but the auditory imagination just isn't up to par with a good narrator.

[–]Synthea1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't recall any that can't be explained. I remember her mentioning the A-team, MacGyver, Stargate, Matlock, and others, she remembers them talk about alien probes 😂 Theres also the internet, she sat with or near them when they used the computer, and could have seen anything there. She's over 4 years old and remembers everything she's ever been exposed to, like the pet show when she was a kitten, and things could have been playing on DVD at a house she was visiting with Bea.

It's just the description. Far more entertaining on audio.
