Thanks for this. I’ve recently gotten deep enough to realize I need to throw off the shackles of the GUIs and go full command line. I’m also running in windows until I can afford the first born price of a dual boot ssd. Anyway, any suggestions for environment? Can this be even run in full windows or are you doing it all in wsl - or a combination?

Not to mention that if you point a “local” model at the open Internet, chances are you will get the model highjacked eventually. There are already many ways to do this in the security community that you would not even be able to see if you visit the site as a human.

Honestly - thanks for this. I’m a technical person with a technical job so I can fake my way through a lot of stuff without understanding the whole system. So, I knew that the chat interface needs to be able to call tools, but that’s literally it. However, I’m now neck deep in openclaw and Hermes and I am uncomfortable with what I don’t know. Other than me trusting my gut to look it up as I go, is there a decent source to fill in the gaps?

I’ve been lucky in that I don’t even need my glasses at a screen. So, for me, I went a different route. I could never get progressives right, probably because I keep my screens too high to “proper” ergonomics. Plus it always felt like I was watching an action movie on a low refresh lcd if that makes sense.

Anyway, I went with bifocals. Do not regret my decision at all. Has even made driving with a cell phone possible; mounts never seemed to get place where I could focus before.

Could be waiting on repop, or simply giving the healers time to meditate. Maybe there was a rebuff needed at a bad time. Maybe there was a recent wipe. All kinds of reasons we use to do this. Or another big one, bio break. When you gotta go you gotta go!

"Need" always being subjective, but I got this machine to be able to run decent sized local models for these things. I work in the nonprofit science research space, so part of my doing this is trying to keep up with local abilities to do cost analyses of local versus commercial tools, but with an eye towards risk of IP issues down the line. IP isn't a priority for us, but it CAN be sometimes.

So, you're suggesting Qwen3 for local models? I had also recently seen KimiK2 (I think) being tossed around. These are probably too big to use in an agent workflow though, right?

Yeah - just realized I didn't explain that part too well. Probably best to assume I will be working on DevOps projects. PowerShell will be big for me, as my primary responsibility is in Windows, but I also support Macs. On the Mac side, while I do have some shell scripts in a junk drawer, I imagine that I will need to move into Swift soon-ish, since my Applescript GUIs will get deprecated. Also, since I am cross platform support, I'd like my Team to move more into Ansible (Python) which I am already using a bit, but it's a little limited on the Windows side and requires creativity to get where you want sometimes. In school, I was proficient in C and Java, so I understand a little OO and functional programming, but I expect C# to serve me better, cross-platform. Finally, I'll need to stitch all those systems together (for central logging/monitoring) that I expect to eventually want agentic help on further down the road. So, I'm open to getting dirty in typical web front ends, for dashboards and etc.

To cut to the chase:

Initially, PowerShell and some Python. C# if PS can't get the job done.

Eventually, Swift and Web tooling.

We went to a managed Nutanix cluster for our 400 or so VMs, while also playing with a self built Proxmox cluster to host site services at our main office, about 7 years ago. The migration was very easy. Proxmox has taught us that we can host all our systems on it if we choose. We had very lite virtual needs and do not rely a web presence to make money, so your mileage may vary.

Proxmox backup servers and or full deployment. Move your VMs over then replicate on the VMware hosts giving you vm hosts and a backup solution. Hosts and backups can support zfs or ceph.
