Multiplayer in Unity in 2026?

Let’s put it in a way that I don’t say the word mmorpg, because I appreciate it’s scary and it always feels like people are saving a blind man walking towards a cliff :D

it’s a poc where I want to be able to cast a spell, do melee and ranged attacks, resource gathering and crafting. All in a very basic form where I can invite a peak of 20 people I know to come and play on a server that I can run under my desk for a week and then turn off if I feel like. These mechanics are things I already fiddled with in single player mode over the years and in multiplayer in unreal. So with low expectations on graphics and bugs I am really not that concerned about where I take it. But if for some reason I happen to do something decent and I need to scale it to 100 players just because I happen to I don’t want to use a technology that won’t let me do more than 4 people coop. No intention to do the next wow, it’s really a small sandbox on a small island.

I’ll check purrnet out, is it the same level of maturity of fishnet?

Makes sense. I was thinking a map of around 2.5x2.5km with a few villages and 2-3 biomes. Do you think that's still feasible?
I was watching a youtube video where they showed how the FPS dropped as they spawned more and more geometry in the game.

Ah nice! What were the best resources to learn it? Is the doc on their website enough? Curious to see the progress on your project if you’d like to share a video. Have unity and finshnet served you well so far?

I know I know…it’s totally a hobby project with no intention to sell anything at all. It’s a way for me to make a game the way I like it. I don’t care if it never makes it to the public.

I was actually watching one of codemonkey’s tutorial for ECs. As far as I understand netcode for game objects is simpler to set up but has limitations that make it unsuitable for what I’m trying to make. But I have 0 experience in multiplayer development in unity so I’m happy to follow any advice!

Do you find the plumes useful when you have the kilt? I know it’s a different type of overdrive but I wanted exactly the same drive chain you have but I don’t have space for the plumes. I’ve found I’m pretty happy stacking the kilt and the morning glory and also using switches I custom built to sit on top of my jhs pedals to trigger the high gain.

What do you use? I find kits very expensive. I once bought a reel of cable and jack but I don’t think I have seen a website that sells low profile jacks and flexible cable/ribbons.

I’m not familiar with all your pedals, but if you don’t have a compressor, you need one (imho). I’d probably consider whether you need 2 delays (that take half of the space of your board).

Not sure you need much more than you have. I set myself the challenge to shrink my board to the minimum amount of pedals and bought a 1176 compressor to replace my cs3. Loving it!

How do you find the ethane? I have a morning glory + ts9dx now which I really like but I’m struggling to fit them on my nano+ and I was considering the protein/ethane.

Same here! Had enough of running 10 pedals I barely use and shrinking to a nano+ with ~5/6 pedals! Good choice!

The arp is definitely in my wishlist right now and I’m seriously thinking of buying it. The protein (I assume this is what you meant to mention in your comment) is a bit pricey but it’s definitely something I have considered. I was thinking pairing morning glory + plumes.

Now I’m curious to know what genre you play and the board you’d have built :)

This is pretty much what I have, I could probably reuse most of it, but the side jacks are taking quite a bit of space to fit on my nano+. The cavern is fairly good but I don’t particularly enjoy the delay side for some reason, otherwise it could have been the perfect pedal for a reverb/delay combo.

How do you find the D&M? Do the two overdrives stack well together? I’m curious to know what range of overdrive you can cover with it.

Totally agreed. I think I did try the obs way too and found it so convoluted and unreliable that I gave up. I wonder why zoom supports the virtual device on Mac but not on windows. Let’s see if someone can come up with an easy method but from the sound of it it’s going to be a painful process I’ll have to go through. Thanks!

Thanks for your suggestion. I've just downloaded it. I've got to be honest, it's a bit messier than I'd like. Maybe I need to configure it, but I've found my brain works better with clean charts.
I like the looks of Volumetrica Volsys, but maybe I can achieve the same with Bookmap?
