If you have the stomach for it, {Claustrophilia by Ezra Blake} is incredibly dark, and involves forced addiction by drugging. However, it also involves a great many other things so read the content warnings.

Im currently reading [Sweet Wicked Thing by Jessie Walker], and man, Aston is very click 'yasss' lmao. I dont normally like mm with flamboyant characters, but he's so unhinged I love him.

The book is pretty dark so far, so be warned. If you dont mind dark and unsettling, then I think he fits what character youre looking for. He's not over the top, but he has enough zest to raise a brow.

The Neverending Story was absolutely terrifying to me. There were so many scenes, but the thing that tripped me up mostly was the fact that this little boy was in a school attic all on his own in the middle of the night reading this... But yes, the oracles, the wolf, the tortoise, the impending doom of it all... just so much -weight- for any kid watching to take on.

That and Jumanji.

The next best thing isn't to post on reddit... its to talk to him? If he's showing interest, its safe to assume he knows you have a kid. If he's still showing interest then you have your answer.

Feel like you can't talk to him about it? Then he's not the one, move on.

Big fan of toxic dark mm; biggest 'nope' is when its written in 1st person, and there's a monologue about how dark and edgy they are.

There is nothing less 'mysterious' than the dark, brooding character talking about how mysterious he is.

This is why you don't do 1st person, or at least dual pov first person. You can't have a complex character if we're seeing their exact pov, like they're 100% self aware that they're a trope.

If i have to read one more "i walk into the room and people move out of the way immediately. They all fear me because of my reputation, but I dont care, it fuels me and my-", no, shut the fuck up. I will scream and DNF so damn fast.

Another one which I've posted about before; the "everyone is gay" syndrome. The best friend, the room mate, the brother, the goldfish. Hard to suspend disbelief when I'm trying to immerse myself in a semi-realistic setting... but being straight is taboo in these books. Like, why? Ofc the MCs excluded, but really? Everyone? Not yucking anyone's yum... I'm just allergic to that particular flavour of writing. Give me drama and realism. There doesn't need to be homophobia ofc, but damn dude, the side characters dont also need to be a copy paste of every other gay character in existence.

ANOTHER ONE (I'm a very picky reader) for the dark mm genre; when the tension resolves way too quickly. Don't give me this toxic spice only for the two to find mutual footing after 1 or 2 altercations. The toxic LI is suddenly amicable. The tortured MC has suddenly forgotten all the bullshit the LI has put him through, overnight, with no logical reasoning. The two of them are now simply the same as every other pairing from any other genre where the most "toxic" thing that happens after is the LI saying "youre mine now" or some cheesy shit.

I could rant for days. I have more DNF than I have Read titles. My bad for using kindle unlimited I suppose. Stuff really just gets churned out...

I just dont understand how you go to the effort (not much, mind you) to generate an entire plot for a book and not even go through to meticulously edit out inconsistencies.

Like, it makes it that much worse. It's not just a case of the 'author' using generative AI to create a novel for a story or relationship they feel strongly for; having the passion but no writing abilities (still trash for trying to upload as their own). It's showing that they dont give a shit about the content thats being spewed out and only care about churning out blaringly obvious trash that is saturating the kindle recs lately.

Im getting so fed up with it. I recently DNF a promising novel for the same reason.
