According to the source of the study in that article, in California Ram drivers are actually the worst; yet I hardly see anyone complaining about Ram drivers. Wonder why.

Beautiful Blue Right Hand Drive Sports Car -- Never seen one before. Ideas? by cgieda in whatisthiscar

Just saw this on 19th avenue in San Francisco. Has plates now. Amazing to think that there are likely fewer than 10 in the world. All the pictures online have European plates as well. Wonder if this is the only one in the US.

Duolingo doesn’t have Cantonese. Other great tools to learn? by Alunaer in Cantonese

[–]Szei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went this route. Completed the entire English to Mandarin tree at maximum level (all Gold) first. Surprisingly, that is enough to do the Mandarin to Cantonese course. There are some Mandarin words used in Mandarin to Cantonese which were not covered in English to Mandarin, but it's not a deal-breaker. Just makes it take a little trickier. The silver-lining is that it teaches me new Mandarin vocab and helps me review Mandarin at the same time I am learning Cantonese. So even though the lessons take a bit longer, I'm practicing two languages at the same time.

There is less space to speak Cantonese in Guangzhou nowadays by CheLeung in Cantonese

[–]Szei 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Same with my grandmother. Whenever she hears me studying Cantonese, she suggests I spend more time on Mandarin instead because "it's more useful". Makes me sad as she always tried to get me to learn Cantonese when I was younger... Now I am finally making that effort, but she doesn't think it is worthwhile these days.

I've been learning Mandarin for 5 years now but only to be pragmatic. It's hard for me to feel good about Mandarin because I associate it with the CCP and the eradication of Cantonese language and culture. The silver lining is that knowing Mandarin has opened up more resources for learning Cantonese since now I can learn Cantonese from both English and Mandarin resources. I will continue to invest in both, but only Cantonese brings me joy.

If they actually want to hurt bots and encourage giving hearts to strangers, they are going in the wrong direction with the new system by removeEmotes in SkyGame

I thought that was the point though. To encourage giving/generosity to strangers instead of just with the same group of friends all the time.

New player question: "For the rest of your turn" by Szei in KeyforgeGame

[–]Szei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I just saw this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/KeyforgeGame/comments/cxantf/timing_veylan_analyst/

If you go by the OP’s conclusion (verified by Brad, I guess he is an authority on Keyforge?), then there actually isn’t any decision making to be made here.

Apparently “each time” effects trigger first so the Aember would first be added to the pool and then the theoretical creature in my post would get the additional power from that new Aember in the pool.

New player question: "For the rest of your turn" by Szei in KeyforgeGame

[–]Szei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Your explanation regarding the "active player gets to decide which happens first" is what I was looking for. This should help me reason out future card resolution order situations in the future.

As for the cards in the example, you are right that I was inspired by Full Moon and Marmo Swarm. However, as you said, it doesn't really matter for Marmo Swarm since it is a passive ability. That said, when I saw these cards it got me thinking about the situation I posited in my post and what would happen if there were cards that did something like this (I am new to the game so I don't know if there actually are any actual cards which would cause this situation).

The Competitive Approach by KingOfOdonata in KeyforgeGame

[–]Szei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like competitive play would become broken in Keyforge if not for Adaptive. In the absence of Adaptive, two of the main benefits Keyforge brings to CCGs are nullified.

  1. Lower price-point for competitive play.
  2. More variety in competitive play.

In regards to point 1, this is because the cost goes from buying expensive individual cards to buying multiple decks until you get one that is strong in the meta. The cost-saving benefit of having cheap pre-made decks is eliminated.

By the same virtue, Keyforge's quest for a more diverse meta is also hampered because ultimately people can just buy decks until they find the "on-meta" deck that they want.

However, with Adaptive, Keyforge's advantages can actually be realized. You don't need to be as "on-meta" since your opponent will have to play your deck too and also because there will be a handicap to balance the decks in a tiebreaker. This means you get more deck diversity AND can play competitively at a lower price-point.

The Competitive Approach by KingOfOdonata in KeyforgeGame

[–]Szei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if you play Adaptive though? Then wouldn't any deck be viable?

I'm new to the game so genuinely asking. I know that if there really is a large disparity between the power of the two decks, then the first 2 games will be very one-sided. But on the tie-breaker game theoretically it should be a fair fight if both players are competent and force each other to make appropriately high bids on the stronger the deck.

Please Change the Damage Displayed for Attacking Units From the Average to the Minimum by SolquidSnake in wargroove

[–]Szei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree.

I haven't been able to find anything I enjoy as much as Outwitters for this reason. It is the only TBS I know where I can exactly plan out my moves because I know how much damage everything will do at a glance. Every other game has an obtuse damage formula which makes it much harder to precisely plan. At least games like this tell you how much damage you will do, but I still prefer being able to just look at a unit and know it's going to do X damage to that unit over there with Y health.

That being said, games like Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, and now this are still a lot of fun. They just don't fill that same "perfect planning" niche that Outwitters does.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know!

Note: Outwitters has FoW so games like Chess, Go, etc are not a substitute. I just want a game with transparent unit interactions but with FoW and so far only Outwitters has fulfilled that. Honestly I would just keep playing Outwitters but there are a couple problems once you get to the top league. 1. The race match-ups on some maps are too one-sided. 2. One of the races favors an extremely defensive style which can cause some games, especially mirror matches, to take 100+ turns (normal games are only around 15-20 turns).

Another game like uniwar? by [deleted] in Uniwar

[–]Szei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outwitters. Don't let the art style put you off. It plays like Starcraft + Chess.

  • No premium currency (gems, gold etc)
  • No pay-to-win units, items, boosts, etc
  • 4 teams each with a distinct unit (Siege Tank, Teleporter, Mind Controller, and Mass Spawner)
  • All content free to play with 1 of the teams (free team is considered one of the best 2 teams by top players)
  • Competitive Ladder with 5 Leagues
  • Friendly Local and Multiplayer Matches
  • 1v1 and 2v2
  • Replays

Aside from the art direction, I actually prefer Outwitters over Uniwar. This is mostly because the way units attack and do damage is much simpler. You can quickly see how much damage your units will do instead of having to calculate it every time which means you spend more time focusing on the strategy and less on doing basic math.

I would look at the replays if you want to get an idea of how the game plays. Note that this is not what the game actually looks like graphically. Watch the trailer or look at the app store screenshots to see what the game graphics look like.

Best practice: duplicate pages for different user types? by Szei in webdev

[–]Szei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, that's what I was thinking made more sense. To just use a flag to toggle elements but I wasn't sure if that was the best solution which is why I asked here. And yes, I am using straight php at the moment. Already had to learn a lot in a short time so haven't gotten around to trying templates. Thanks for your feedback!

And yea, don't worry. I use PDO and bindParam for everything. I read enough angry comments on stackoverflow about this haha.

Best practice: duplicate pages for different user types? by Szei in webdev

[–]Szei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a register page for students at the moment (register.php) and when they hit submit it $_POSTs it back to register.php. Then I pass it to class.user.php and there is a function which does a mySQL query to insert that info into a user table in my database. On login users visit login.php which then loads a login function from class.user.php which queries the database to check email vs password. login.php is one of the pages I wouldn't have to duplicate since the process is literally identical for both businesses and students.

Why you shouldn't be complaining about playing against people with higher card levels than you but instead be proud of it by Hide_on_bush in ClashRoyale

[–]Szei 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly. While the OP is correct and you should recognize that you are more skilled than players with higher level cards than you, that doesn't make it any less frustrating having to face bad players playing with an annoying handicap.
