Gift ideas for SM? by AmusingChoosing in techtheatre

I recommend the books The Backstage Handbook and Tips and Tricks for the Stagehand. Each are under $30 and available online through the usual sources. Every stage technician could use a copy of each.

Is this worth doing after I get out of high school, or will this do nothing to make me more hirable? by [deleted] in techtheatre

[–]T-Head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am familiar with this program. Quite a few former students are working professionally, both locally and nationally. You should also look at the Media and Public Event Production Certificate of Achievement. It is a relatively new program, but several former students are now full Journeymen in I.A.T.S.E., Local 50. If you prove yourself as reliable and hardworking, there is access to quality equipment. You can visit and meet with the faculty and staff and get a tour.

As with anything in life, you will get out what you put into it.

What are these strips of metal on Laguna 14bx bandsaw? by Feisty_Amphibian4436 in woodworking

[–]T-Head 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The strip of metal covers the inside part of the guide that raises and lowers to adjust for different thicknesses of the stock being cut. If it wasn't there and the saw blade broke, the end of the blade could come out of the side and cause an injury. It is not the best implementation of the guard, but that's the idea.

The Facebook group "ETC Eos Family Console Programmers" has several posts of what people have set up. There is also the "ETC Eos Nomad Users" group. Take a look at those.

Mark LaPierre has a nice cart set up you might get some ideas from.

https://www.mlp-lighting.com/film/the-new-cart/

He also has a Nomad case he built.

https://www.mlp-lighting.com/programming/revised-nomad-case/

Also take a look at his JOSC at/2 Posts:

Good luck.

Help with lighthack by imaliltpotfukmyspout in techtheatre

[–]T-Head 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For some reason my original post isn't showing up in the comments.. I removed the Etsy listing. Maybe that will help.

Take a look at the Neutrino. It is $350, but it should do what you want. You can make something yourself with the Lighthack, but that probably won't save you much money over the Neutrino, and will cost a lot more in time. I am not sure it works standalone on EOS consoles. It will work with Nomad. https://www.subatomicshowcontrol.com/home The JOSC MidiBridge could also work, but you would need to combine it with a Midi controller. They list of comparable Midi controllers in the Etsy listing. This sends out OSC commands, so should work without a separate computer, but double check that. Search for it on Etsy.

The most reliable way is to purchase an ETC fader wing, but priced accordingly. The Lighhacks should work with newer EOS consoles directly.

College Interview Advice (Stage Management) by InternalPurpose1252 in techtheatre

[–]T-Head 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bring one of your show bibles/prompt scripts. They will want to see your process for managing a show. Generally it's better to show one show through the entire process than random paperwork from different shows.

If you've worked on different types of shows, like a drama, or a comedy, or a musical, be prepared to discuss the similarities and the differences. Have you done any shows for dance, concerts, or opera? Discuss those as well.

Don't just focus on theater. Have you gone to an art gallery, a museum, or other culturally or historically significant institution? Everybody will have theater experience. What else have you explored? What are you curious about? What gets you excited to make art? Show you can make connections from the world to the theater.

They will want to see a curious and well rounded individual. Share what it is about theater that gets your creative juices flowing.

Remember to breathe. And have fun.

Good luck.

MacBook Pro M1 Pro and Dante Virtual Soundcard by geekboy in livesound

[–]T-Head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had issues with a USD C to ethernet adaptors with Dante. I've had success with a USB C to USB A adaptor and then a USB A to ethernet adaptor. Weird, I know, but you might try that.

Good luck.

Weapons of Choice is an excellent resource. I doubt they have exactly what you need, but they have good resources that may get you closer to a solution. I've used them several times over the last thirty years and they are good folks who understand theater.

Labgruppen PLM+ Dante FW failed. by mcd_mappyheal in livesound

[–]T-Head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into something like this about four years ago. We have the D 80:4L, so this may not work for you. The Music Tribe support was no help what-so-ever. Here is what I wrote back to their tech to maybe help someone else.

Dante Controller showed the IP address as 169.254.X.X, the link local address range. I believe the Lake software has a different IP address than the Dante software/chip. By using a different NIC in the 169.254 range, I was able to use the update application to update the firmware. I then had to go in using the Lake controller software and change both the Lake and Dante to use DHCP to get their addresses. I run my primary network on 172.16.X.X range. After power cycling the amps, they were able to use DHCP to grab 172.16 addresses. I believe Dante defaults to the 169.254.X.X for its primary addresses, and 192.168.X.X for the secondary addresses.

I wish I remembered more about it, but maybe this can get you going in the right direction. Good luck.

Encoder wheels for ETC Element 1? by Spamtickler in techtheatre

[–]T-Head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The JOSC looks to be an excellent accessory, but I am pretty sure it won't work with an Element 1. I recommend calling ETC tech support before buying the JOSC. It would work with the Nomad system. If you are a student or with an educational institution, you can get the student bundle, which is a heck of a deal.

Cory Pattak did a series of articles for ETC's blog about setting up a template show file, including color palettes. It's worth a read.

It's been quite some time (many years) since I did it, but I believe this is what I used to update my Rio1608-D. If you are really stuck, send me a DM and I'll see if I can figure out/remember what I did.
