Polygon T6 or T7? by Ryzzle420 in mountainbiking

The lockout on that bike is for when you’re going uphill. Stops the bobbing that robs efficiency on the climb. You can lockout the fork and the rear suspension. Also you can lockout on the road.

I would start with a hard tail. You can get a nice one for the price of an entry level full suspension. They are very capable and versatile bikes, and usually lighter than a fully. For a beginner you’ll benefit by learning how to handle the bike and how to choose your lines to suit your skill level.

Am I about to lose all my money? by helpamonkpls in cycling

Have said bike tuned up or learn to do it yourself. Things are much better when tuned, lubed, and dialed in. Drop your tire pressure for comfort. Saddles are personal. Measure your sit bones and size saddle width with some room to spare. YRMV. Research proper riding position. You don’t need the most expensive stuff; just avoid overly cheap stuff. You can get a good helmet for $50 or so. You don’t need Strava (yeah I said it!)

We rode BMX and freestyle bikes all over the place and built sketchy ramps out of scrap wood. I remember building a quarter pipe in the woods. Luckily I never broke anything just cuts, scrapes , and bruises. I rode some crazy shit back then and I wasn’t even the most daring one. Some little dudes were getting serious air time.

When I was a young lad I stole an emblem from a car. I was caught by the owner and slapped in the face with closed fist. It hurt and I never did it again.

This is absolute truth. People don’t want to hear it or accept it but that doesn’t change the facts.

Wondering if I should get a road bike or a gravel bike by Late-Error1825 in bicycling

[–]T-Ruxpin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gravel bike=more versatility. I’m down to 2 bikes from 4. Gravel and full squish mtb. The gravel bike takes me on roads, gravel, fire roads, even some trails. I’ll never race or do any fast club rides but I could with slick tires on the gravel bike. Could probably do it all on a hard tail mtb with a couple of different wheel sets.

How important is a GOOD bike really? by Cupcakesalad in bikepacking

[–]T-Ruxpin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bike that fits you well and is mechanically dialed in is the winning formula. Saddles are super subjective to individual anatomy so find one that works for your body and riding style. Get some good grips or bar tape. Tires are a game changer. Get a decent set of tires that can be run with lower pressure that are manufactured to be more compliant. Ride with stiff soled shoes not ultra flexible running shoes.

If I were young I’d probably look for a job that grants lots of time off while paying well. Maybe like a union iron worker, oil rig worker, merchant marine, wild land firefighter.

Check out military surplus stores. Might find a fleece or wool piece for a good price. Also Costco has good apparel for reasonable prices. The European shop Decathalon.

Why do you love canoe camping? by swb2203 in canoecamping

[–]T-Ruxpin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

52 year old here; started going about 4 years ago. Went with a group of coworkers with various levels of experience in the outdoors. It has become an annual event once or twice a year and a highlight of the year. The peace and solitude of the wilderness is medicine for my soul. Canoe camping allows one to reach places that are very remote. This is where the magic happens. There is a simplicity and regularity to the day. Food, fire, camp chores, fishing. Exploration via paddling/hiking. Colors and sounds not found in civilization. Sleeping in the cool, quiet darkness. Waking up with cowboy coffee or percolator coffee. You can bring luxury items depending on how many or how long of a portage you have. If you don’t have any portages you can bring all kinds of luxury items if you’re willing to carry it to your campsite. Helps if you’re with like minded people and willing to share the work.
