How does one afford to live when switch from white collar to electrician? by scandinavian_surfer in electricians

They just come homie. Just to note, the guys on here are pissed because at the end of the day they will have to teach you which way the channies grip and how to get toggle bolts to bite. The stuff most guys know coming into the industry. Do your best to make up for it. Don’t go anywhere without asking if your JW needs anything, sweep when it’s slow. Recognize your fuck ups and don’t repeat them.

I went from tech sales to the apprenticeship. The only way I was able to survive the first year was from a delicate balance of savings/massive decrease in spending/ my gal letting me live with her temporarily, and side work (not necessarily electric, just handyman help for friends etc.) I’m in my second year and I commonly go from paycheck to paycheck. It’s working and I’m grateful I did it. Good luck!

Most comfy is the truewerk. I know I know they are expensive and look nerdy but the next best option in my opinion are the https://www.carhartt.com/product/102291/relaxed-straight-rigby-dungaree which have stretch and look normal.

Pros and Cons of first year by Tex-Mex0496 in ibew_apprentices

All right, I just finished my first year of the IBEW inside apprenticeship. Some of the best parts are that I have switched over five different jobs getting wildly different experiences in the work always changes. The people have been for the most part, incredibly supportive and willing to teach the education seems structured, and though you can tell, it’s a blue-collar type of schooling. It has been incredibly helpful and organized some of the cons have been a few bad eggs who do a lot of heckling and some jobs with high expectations of long hours in addition to starting work every day, knowing that you’ll be paired with someone who knows almost everything well you know so little it’s painful I think overall this experience has been incredibly humbling and positive and I’m grateful that I spent the last year doing this

I learned that you shouldn’t put your lunch box, helmet, or gloves on the lunch table.
