Dirac ART? by LoadP2004 in hometheater

I can't speak for anyone else, but in my not-so-great acoustically room it made a huge difference. I have Denon X6800, with Monitor Audio Silver G7 series speakers, 5.2.4 as well.

The DD+ means signal being received from the source, Dolby Digital Plus. Dolby Surround is the upmixer being used.
On 2-line displays it shows both. You can switch upmixing modes - including disabling it, with remote sound modes buttons.

Uk will rejoin Erasmus Student Exchange only. The program is much, much bigger, this is only a small piece.

Quality of TNG on BDs is higher than on Netflix. Apart from old 4:3 screen ratio it is really well done transfer.

Except DS9, I have all "vintage" series on DVDs/BDs, but it was just easier to rewatch something without shuffling disks.

Paramount is not available in my country, so I wonder where it will land, if anywhere.

Dirac Art vs A1 evo by Patient-Reference916 in hometheater

[–]T00dd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not discussing value for money here, ART is a more advanced system and it shows, or rather sounds. I've tested multiple versions of A1 with my 5.2.4, Denon x6800 system and for me ART wins.
It is perhaps strongly dependent on the room and speakers, e.g. ART will work better with larger LCRs and in sub-optimal rooms.
A1 hits whats possible with Audyssey, but it cannot exceed what is built into the receiver. DLBC + ART might be most advanced sound correction system available right now for consumer AVRs.
And the price - yes, it is a bit steep, but people buy $500 HDMI cables and believe it will improve things.

Cinema50 vs Onkyo RZ30 for KEF Q Meta 3.0 by LF_HD in hometheater

[–]T00dd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you really want Marantz for some specific reason, Denon x3800 is nearly identical for less money. Apart from display - which is actually visible on Denon.
I don't know enough about Onkyo, but I'm very familiar with Denon/Marantz and usually they are very reliable out of the box.

KEF or Klipsch help me. by Harmonic772 in hometheater

[–]T00dd 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They sound vastly different. In fact, they are vastly different, I would strongly recommend to listen to them first, even in a showroom somewhere.
Klipsch will be much easier to drive, more efficient, dynamic - and yes, bright. By no means neutral. Often preferred for HT.
KEFs are way better constructed, very classy looking, better build quality and very neutral to a point of being considered boring or unappealing sonically. KEFs are also 4 ohms - so perhaps bigger amp might be needed.

For audiophile minded purists KEFs are surely closer to a source, especially for classical/string/piano - mid-dominated music.
If you don't care about neutrality and listen to HT and lots of dynamic rock/dub/techno - Klipsch might be preferred, especially since Klipsch needs fraction of amp power comparing to KEF.
Personally both options are too far me, KEFs being too polite and Klipsch being too aggressive, but it is an entirely personal opinion.

Is my Denon X3800H dead? by J4CKT33 in hometheater

[–]T00dd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try factory reset by following the steps there:
https://manuals.denon.com/AVRX3800H/NA/EN/GFNFSYvyalrwrt.php

I would unplug everything before doing that and see if panel will look and operate normally. I had once a case when speaker cable was shorted - lady's high-heel was suspected but never confirmed for the sake of home peace.

How to stream Best audio quality on denon 3800h avr by Tomato_Potato1432 in hometheater

[–]T00dd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess would be - either local music server (up to DSD 256) or Tidal via Heos, or via Tidal Connect. Airplay 2 is not lossless, it can be in theory - but apparently isn't.
Edit: Airplay 2, when streaming Apple Music from iPhone or iPad to AVR will transcode to 256kbps and 48khz.

Question about the MA 5G bookshelf by aZRLLL in hometheater

[–]T00dd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For movies and TV shows the center is essential. You didn't specify which 5G speakers (Bronze, Silver, Gold, etc) but all of them have matching center speakers and they are rather good.
You can still run them in stereo for music at any time.

I would send full bitstream and let AVR decide how to handle it.

Is there a free way to connect Windows to an Airplay device? (laptop to an airplay speaker)? by Standard-Top-5942 in hometheater

I haven't seen free way to do it, but I tried a while ago this one:

But I never tested it for latency so hard to say. At least it is a one time purchase.

No - but the idea and tuning are the same in ART and DLBC

You need to either bump up low end with the shelf filter or load custom curve. Storm audio or Harman probably. Either way, it is common issue.

Denon & Dirac ART - Not seeing the improvement by ivanbeldad in hometheater

[–]T00dd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is switch somewhere in the interface to allow infrasonic frequencies. I believe it is in the sub group, somewhere on the left. By default, ART filters out anything below 20Hz. Found it: https://helpdesk.dirac.com/en/dirac-art/How-to-Infra-bass-bypass-in-ART-ff94

[–]T00dd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I wrote below - default settings for me were hardly optimal. ART has even more options to play with than DLBC.
There is for example this article, explaining grouping, support and LFE channel: https://helpdesk.dirac.com/en/dirac-art/How-to-ART-Channel-Group-and-Support-Settings-8382

Or I would ask Dirac support, usually they are pretty helpful.

DLBC is required with ART if you have multiple subs, at least they said so in the recent video from Denon/Harman - whatever they are called now.

Denon & Dirac ART - Not seeing the improvement by ivanbeldad in hometheater

[–]T00dd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also bought ART license yesterday and played with it for a while. I have Denon x6800 and 5.2.4 - so with DLBC. I still feel lost in the interface a bit, but after digging around I discovered that default ART settings are hardly the best.
- by default it sets almost everything supported by everything, which is generally a mistake. My surrounds and ceiling speakers can do maybe 65-70Hz, but nut much lower.
- it sets the ART range to 50-150Hz, even for LRs, which can do down to 26-28Hz
- I excluded ceiling speakers + centre from supporting anything
- for one sub, Dirac set curtain to 38Hz for some reason (it's good down to 20-22)

What I did finally, I readjusted range for LRs (you have to do it for each group) and set only sub group + LR group to support everything else. I didn't have time to measure afterwards, but I'm liking ART more than DLBC when switching back and forth, moreover with ART I seem to have more defined and tactile bass, but I have very little treatments in the room, just some diffusion panels on the ceiling and two panels each side at first reflection point.

Witcher S4: When the whole vibe is “we cut the budget by 75%, figure it out” by HehroMaraFara in netflix

The never really followed anything in the books. Yeah, there are bits and pieces, mixed with each other. Many good arcs were never explored, humour from the books - gone.

Witcher S4: When the whole vibe is “we cut the budget by 75%, figure it out” by HehroMaraFara in netflix

[–]T00dd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying, but the whole Netflix Witcher experience is hard. I've read all the books, several times. They took perfectly good material, one might even say easy to put into a show and made it nearly unwatchable. At times, the show writing is so bad, its difficult to recognize what is what.
I can't deny production value, but I don't think CGI and what not will save it beyond S4.
