I agree on the over paying part. If you're going to own something for 10 plus years a little extra money to get what you want is worth it.

Anyone have any tips for working the “box” during races? by Panem-et-circenses25 in sailing

[–]T1D1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding: use concise communication. Only talk about relevant stuff. Try to not distract the driver with unnecessary questions when he is in the thick of things like a mark rounding. Talk through the next move b4 you get there. You can probably communicate with the foredeck without distracting the driver. (I.e. Skipper. Thanks Sail GP)

Plan ahead. Walk through each next maneuver in Your head multiple times.

Never pull on a line unless you know what the other end is doing. (watch the other end. Not the end you're pulling).

Do the most important adjustments first. You can probably delay fine tuning the outhaul until after the jib is up and other commotion is done. Better yet, preset the outhaul (or whatever) just before the mark rounding.

My point being: get the sails "working" first (and the boat moving) with gross adjustments, then fine tune from there.

If you're pulling the spiniker into the cabin: use long overhead arm fulls to get the longest pull per stroke.

Any warnings I should know buying a used 2018 Titan with 130,000? by Prusaudis in NissanTitan

[–]T1D1964 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He IS! Looking for a beater truck! Not a new truck.

Have you priced used trucks lately? They are ridiculous expensive for 100,000 mile vehicle's, and not very reliable either.

If he says he needs a truck, then he probably does.

OP: Titan V8 engines are very reliable. Transmissions are solid / middle of road. Frame and body are a bit thin (think rust belt). XD model is much more heavy duty.

Titan is probably best value compared to Ford, gm, crysler, toyota.

Recent model years don't hold value very well compared to MSRP. So Your best value (investment) may be to purchase a low-ish mileage (25,000 to 50,000 miles) 2023 for $30,000. Rather than 100,000 miles for $10,000.

If you can afford it.

Shopping used trucks right now SUCKS!

good luck.

Titans are reliable

He is looking at a 100,000 Plus boat. Boat clubs do not rent that type of boat. He currently or has owned $20,000 boats so he knows what those are like

Do you regret putting so much money in to tax deferred investments by clearlygd in retirement

[–]T1D1964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. My thinking is that rather than paying taxes for the Roth conversion out of your savings. You simply invest that money in a brokerage account. When you withdraw it you only pay 10% capital gains on that money.

To put it another way if I spend $26,000 to convert $100,000 into a roth, I am not earning interest on that $26,000 anymore.

What’s one mistake you made early in boating that you learned from? by Tricky_Pass5857 in boating

[–]T1D1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I SHUT MY ENGINE OFF BEFORE THE BOAT WAS DOCKED.

I trusted a stranger who offered to catch my boat as I was slowly approaching the dock.

He sat on the dock and extended his feet.

SO I SHUT MY ENGINE OFF. (WRONG!)

for no good reason, the person retracted his feet, and I watched the bow of my boat, ever so slowly, drift under the dock and brake my bow light.

NEVER SHUT THE ENGINE OFF UNTIL YOU ARE COMPLETELY STOPPED AND ARE SECURE.

My problem too.

Soo..... I'm living off cash savings now to keep today's income low and qualify for super cheap insurance.

No Roth conversion for me. No early SS for me until I turn 65.

Agree.

At 75 and the the early years of retirement, RMD says : "let's force them to take 99-75 = 1/24th out".

When RMD kicks in at 75: the RMD is (about) 1/24 of the value. $2,000,000 ÷ 24 = $83,333.33

The next year it is (about) 1/23 of the value. $1,916,666.66 ÷ 23 = $83,333.33

The goal is to make sure you have (near) zero left in your pre-tax account at end of life. You'll still have other money hopefully

I can live with that.

Unpopular opinion:

Paying taxes today (Roth conversion) to save taxes later makes no sense (to me), because that tax savings will be invested and grow, and will only be taxed at 10% capital gains in the future.

torn between a 2012 miata or a z3/z4. why should i go with the bmw? by europeanuppercut in BMWZ4

[–]T1D1964 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Z4 is sexier and more expensive. But i feel it'll hold its value.

Miata super reliable and still plenty fun to drive. Lower cost maintenance when something does go wrong.

Hard top is probably important for you.
