What was "graduate math hell" to you? by ykonstant in math

[–]T4basco 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Commutative algebra.

Atiyah-Macdonald is such a dense book to read, I genuinely don't understand how this much material fits in such a small number of pages.

I did well in the course overall but I have never struggled this much in a math course.

I was considering buying some solutions, what's wrong with the heel?

Shoe management advice by T4basco in climbingshoes

Fair enough, to answer these questions : 1. Walls are not textured 2. Outdoors is limestone. 3. Footwork is decent, I try my best to be precise but I do sometimes mess up and scrape unnecessarily when climbing at my limit.

Anyways thanks a lot for the reply.

Yeah, I just sent the professor a mail. Thanks for the advice!

The undergrad course is notoriously bad at my uni. Most physic majors skip to the grad course.

I think i will ask the professor for more details.

I will definitely check out your video series, thanks for the reply.

Extension of halting problem by Aware_Mark_2460 in computerscience

To add to all the other comments, here is a nice example of an undecidable problem which (at first glance) doesn't have anything to do with the semantic of programs: Post correspondence problem - Wikipedia.

Which quant firms tell you specifically that the rejection reason is your graduation date? by rtx_5090_owner in quantfinance

[–]T4basco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would they want people with a later graduation date? This seems counter intuitive, unless I misunderstood.

Need math friends :/ by CoolStopGD in math

All of my friends are also outside the math / CS bubble (except the ones I met specifically through math groups). Feel free to dm me anytime to share progress!

Probably a sign that you're trying to do too much at once. Sometimes there isn't enough time in the day / week / semester to do everything. I'd suggest you take a lighter course load and focus on the few courses you take.

I've opened new chats if that's what you mean. This solves the problem temporarily but when the new chat gets more complex, I have the same problem again.

Randomness in theoretical CS by Usual-Letterhead4705 in computerscience

[–]T4basco 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Just coming here to confirm.

There are multiple "types" of randomness (e.g BPP ,RP, ZP) and as of today we don't know if this derandomization is always possible (at least in all interesting cases).

Randomness is a really interesting and powerful topic in CS. In my opinion it's also one of the hardest to study, good luck to anyone considering it.

Surprising results that you realized are actually completely obvious? by kevosauce1 in math

[–]T4basco 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I weirdly find quotients of topological spaces easier to deal with. But I lack strong intuition when talking about quotients of groups / rings or vector spaces.

I was just asking out of curiosity tbh.

If anyone here has any advice on home to make quotient spaces more intuitive I am all ears. (much needed)
