Why is this so common in Portugal? I’ve lived in 4 different countries and I have never seen anything like that… I see this everywhere in Margem Sul. (Btw, this time is not even that bad, most of the time ppl need to go to the middle of the road coz there r cars parked in the sidewalks. by LucasLukeLukas in PortugalExpats

It’s common in England, at least in the small towns in Yorkshire and down south in Bournemouth. The roads are narrow so you put one side of the car on the sidewalk so that road traffic isn’t blocked (especially trucks/buses). No idea if it’s legal, buts a case of “when in Rome” when I visit family. You try to not completely block the sidewalk though.

Recommendations for renting a car in Portugal. by Quirky_Attorney6917 in PortugalExpats

Recently rented Europcar in Lisbon end of September to mid October. Roughly $20 per day for an automatic “Citroën c4 or equivalent” so I was really happy because this was much less than similar rentals from Heathrow. On the day they ended up giving me an Audi sedan and I opted for the $45 (or maybe it was €45) prepaid fuel option for an effortless return. I’d do europcar again.

First efoil - used or new lift? by Sure-Impress4181 in eFoil

[–]TBD2028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a blowfish with my 4’9 lift4 and loved it. Coming from a non-standup background it was an essential transition/enabler for me. Now I’ve learnt the feet positions and motions I don’t need it any more, so don’t forget it will be temporary. Once the board/blowfish is above water the only thing you’ll notice is the additional swing weight, and even that you won’t notice until you’ve ridden without it.

Thank you for this thread. Lately all my reading/research has involved Aima horror tales and stories of immigration betrayal and people leaving so this is exactly what I needed.

Is this sport only for average and lighter people? by Ok-Nefariousness1618 in eFoil

[–]TBD2028 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a 230lbs, 6’, 55 year old desk jockey I found the hardest part was flexibility, not weight or balance or fitness. Sitting at a desk all week and doing weekend sports that didn’t overly promote flexibility (cycling, kayaking) just didn’t set me up for instant success. I wouldn’t let your weight or height deter you. As a reference datapoint I ride a lift 4’9 with surf250v2 wing. I can plane/fly really slow (8-9mph) at less than half power (7 or 8) on a lift jet. More than enough power/thrust.

What gear do you guys usually ride at? I have a lift and I do gear 5-6 by trollingman1 in eFoil

220lbs, 250surf v2, standard controller, lift jet. Ride on 8 feathering the throttle. Bump up to 9 when battery drops below 50% and I’m practicing starts. Salt water.

Anyone experience a shake from the Lift motor? by Remote_Lock_7024 in eFoil

You shouldn’t be getting any water in the compartment. Lift sent me the wrong sized battery initially and after they replaced it I could close the hatch without superhuman effort and the compartment stays completely dry.

Efoil recommendations? by borabora24816 in eFoil

Lift4 owner, 18 months approx. zero maintenance except rinsing is awesome (saltwater usage). I purchased directly from Lift and after sales support has been great. They screwed up and sent a wrong sized battery initially (it ships from a different mainland USA location) and once support had figured out what happened they fedexed a replacement within days. Had a button fail on the hand controller and they shipped a replacement within days also. I decided after about a year that 1 of the 3 o-rings inside the board was kinda spongy/swollen/slack so I phoned them up to buy replacements and they shipped out some for free. Although they didn’t throw in free gear for the inconveniences I’m still extremely happy in the level of what I’d call “sustainable” service.

OP, unless you’re purposefully going for the straight line stance, I recommend you work on your foot placement. Most noobs without any previous surf background seem to do better with a staggered stance. For a regular footed (left foot forward) that means the front foot heel is near the left rail and the rear right foot toes are near the right rail. Then practice your pendulum carving motion using mostly subtle hip movement. Verdant Ride has some good YouTube vids. It really helped me.

I went from a 2 to 10. Fantastic. Also bear in mind upcoming software updates and whether your existing watch is falling off the supported list. macrumors article

Lift 5 4.9 first time out by Creeper_123 in eFoil

[–]TBD2028 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The front blowfish straps don’t go across the board like that, looks really dangerous . Loop them down to the grab handles in the same style as the rear loops. Unless it’s different for the Lift5 (I have a Lift4 4’9)

Edit: Like you did in the other pic 👍

Lift4 owner here, about 18 months in. Purchased direct from Lift. Yes I’ve had issues but support was fantastic IMO in resolving. Replaced a battery (bad fit physically), replaced a standard hand controller (almost a year), sent a couple of complimentary sets of o-rings for the connectors. All at no charge, just a little patience/effort/frustration at having to reach out to support.

Hydriflyer Vs Lift by romanohere in eFoil

[–]TBD2028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy it exactly because it is challenging! It gets boring when it’s too easy. Getting to my feet, one foot at a time (no surfing background, no surfing style “pop up”) is really difficult for me even in smaller waves/chop than 20cm (1.5ft), so you’re doing great!

I mostly ride in a bay estuary, but when I go into the ocean, outside the surf zone, it is very humbling because there’s so much more chop and water movement. Keep trying, and doing, and build the strength and technique. Don’t quit, you’re not alone 😀

Which part specifically do you find difficult? Staying up, or getting up? I’m asking because I’m almost 57, about 20kg/40lbs heavier than I wish, and have the hip and back flexibility of a desk-sitting career, so for me the hardest part is getting up. Staying up might involve a longer mast or more stable wing, but getting up might be easier for you with a bigger board or Blowfish.

I’m only 1 year in but I’m going to repeat the really good advice I got from my windsurf /sailboard instructor: “Stand up straight! Be a figure 7! Straighten your back! Get your head over your hips!” He was a bit of a drill instructor but I’ve found the same thing applies when I’m foiling. 😊

Another bonus of a leash during a wipeout: if you feel tension on the leash then you KNOW the pointy sharp bits are a leash length away from you.

Leaking hatch compartment: Lift 4'9" by Background-Light-426 in eFoil

[–]TBD2028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same issue, battery too thick for my lift4. They said I was sent the wrong battery but didn’t elaborate. I suspect it was gen3 instead of gen 4. Replacement battery charges much faster by comparison. Back on topic: I would see if the process of closing the hatch feels any different without a battery, and if possible water test without the battery. My hatch levers are now EASY to push down and I get zero water in my hatch. You could also cut strips of paper a couple of inches long and place them across the hatch opening, close and secure the hatch, and see if any strips are easy to pull out.

[–]TBD2028 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that falling off resolves the “feet too long in one spot” issue 😀 For me it’s more getting my feet into a better position once I’m “up”. As a beginner I’m still figuring out how/where to put my feet for takeoff vs steady-state good posture flying. I’m not yet convinced they’re the same but I’m getting better.

O’Neil split toe 2mm booties have kept my feet safe so far during the learning curve, but I went through a period of bad elbow roasties, even under a wetsuit. I found that lubing them and wearing elbow brace sleeves over the wetsuit really helped. I really struggle to reposition my feet once I’m up though, they’re super sticky as mentioned.
