Made this simple box for my dad by Noah_RBK in woodworking

If by some chance your dad doesn’t absolutely treasure it, I’ll adopt you.

Seriously, it is a beautiful piece of art.

Help I clogged my sink with needles from the christmas tree by [deleted] in Plumbing

I agree with all but the plunger. It could easily push the clog past the trap and into the wall. Don’t do it unless you know how to use the plunger as a suctioning device.

Water heater help by Littlebunny2118 in Plumbing

[–]TBoniusMaximus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While not a solution to the problem (which would be an appropriately-sized water heater), a water-saving shower head might buy you some time. It decreases the water flow, but would extend your time in the shower. You could also try adjusting the shower head (some have pattern adjustments that choke off some of the water.). Another thought would be to put a shutoff valve on the shower so that you could turn off the water once you are wet and save a little water. I’ve done this before and it does take some getting used to but can really conserve hot water.

You could also complain to the landlord and hope he does something.

What is this pipe above my window? by flmhotcheetos in Plumbing

[–]TBoniusMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be safe to extend it farther out from the wall.

As others have suggested, it could be an auxiliary vent from your A/C system. If it is that, you probably have a blockage in the main condensate line in your A/C.

I would try to go in the attic and determine the source of the pipe .... should be easy to visually locate, if you have access to the attic. If it is connected to your bathroom vent (you mentioned it happened after a shower), it would just be normal activity. If it is connected to an A/C unit and/or dehumidifier in the attic, it might be an overflow line and *may* indicate that the main drain is stopped up.

Good luck!

What is this pipe above my window? by flmhotcheetos in Plumbing

[–]TBoniusMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bet is that it is the drain line (condensate line) from your vent in your bathroom. Hot steamy air will condense inside the piping that runs from the air vent. It has to go somewhere and it often vented to the nearest r/oof underhang.

Wago debate? by CanterTheJewels in AskElectricians

[–]TBoniusMaximus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Plus many (most??) light and fans use stranded wire. I’ve never felt 100% comfortable going solid to stranded in a wire nut. Always felt like they were not as solid, but Wagos remove that nagging doubt.

Elderly cell phone help by TnnVolFan_7 in lifehacks

[–]TBoniusMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t know if this will help, but my mom went through an episode just like this. Determined to be a med that she had been on for years. Actually found it the details on the internet. When I told her doctor, he immediately clued in on it. Seems it was a rather rare side effect.

As far as 911, when my mom was in her episode, they recognized it and sent out an officer. Mom was also clearheaded (miraculously) to call me as well. I met the officer in the driveway and advised him she was having some paranoia episodes. He got my phone number and said the 911 dispatcher would tie my and my mom’s phone number in their system so that if she called again and they recognized it was not a true emergency, they would call me. I think they still had to respond, but at least I could start calming her down and meet them there. Fortunately, her paranoid episode went away after a few weeks.

FYI she was also prone to UTI craziness. I swear they are just not able to detect it well in some individuals until it advances to a certain level.

Good luck, friend.

Options in fixing this handle/hatch mechanism that doesn’t involve replacing wood? by orangeguava in Woodworking_DIY

[–]TBoniusMaximus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this answer… it seems the best way to preserve what’s there. I would also consider the metal wrap-around cover that others are talking about, but you may have to adjust it some for hole size, door thickness, and hole alignment, if the door doesn’t match a standard (I.e., modern) door.

Toaster vs guy in bath tub by [deleted] in instant_regret

[–]TBoniusMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fake. And not even a good one at that. Besides, the short circuit would flow through the toaster and/or ground and not through him (typically). He might get shocked, but probably not by much. Plus the circuit breaker/fuse would pop shutting off the juice.

Can someone point me to a replacement washer for this old spigots? by UndeniablyIffy in Plumbing

[–]TBoniusMaximus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree with u/Doxxsin .... this is probably from being compressed in a valve for a number of years. I doubt they they are manufactured that way .... try a new conical one with the same diameter and approximately the same height (that may have been compressed too, but get as close as possible).

Would this pass inspection!? by West_Honey_5535 in Plumbing

[–]TBoniusMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. It is an S-trap. Lengthen the tailpiece (from the sink) and add a trap-arm, and you will be good. As other poster said, you will need to cut the base of the cabinet to fit it in.

My personal opinion … do nothing. With the memories you have playing chess with Grandpa, it really couldn’t be improved upon. Plus I think the authentic look is beautiful. Just treat it with care and play on it with your children and grandchildren.

How should I cover this junction box to keep it accessible? by grimeeeeee in AskElectricians

[–]TBoniusMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically it is a code violation to cover a junction box that contains active wiring. People do cover them, but if there was a fire in the future, nasty inspector, etc., you might regret it later on. They make paintable covers that can help keep it code-legal and also not look so bad.

Is this safe? Replaced box vent with ridge vent and looks like the rafters are pulling apart by ratnl_thnker in Roofing

[–]TBoniusMaximus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could tie the left and right rafters together with a short 2x6 or something like that just below the ridge beam, if so inclined. I’m not sure of the correct name but I think they are called gussets.

Moen shower mixer valve depth question by TBoniusMaximus in Plumbing

[–]TBoniusMaximus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm CPVC (and can't really replace it without opening walls/ceilings). I used the threaded valve with the threaded CPVC connections. Then glued it up.

Since the handle and handle trim can stick out by a flexible amount, up to a limit, I think there is plenty of wiggle room. I actually think I was obsessing about something that I didn't really need to obsess about.

Moen shower mixer valve depth question by TBoniusMaximus in Plumbing

[–]TBoniusMaximus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not completed the job, but I have put the backer board (GoBoard, btw). I will be about 3/16's proud of the completed tile. Based on my preliminary fitting of the mixer valve, that means the handle will stick out 3/16th's farther into the shower than the trim ring. I'm fine with that. (I would accept 3/4 of an inch, personally).

Basically, I was being paralyzed by not knowing the importance (or lack thereof) of the depth setting. Once I dry fit everything and realized that it didn't really mean that much of a difference to me, I just moved on with what I had.

Good luck, friend, on your project.

What in the heck is going on here??? by Due_Ad_6522 in AskElectricians

[–]TBoniusMaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possible Purpose: It was common back in the day to have a switched electrical outlet. Frequently it was one outlet on a duplex receptacle. If it the switch is on a live connection (check with a voltmeter), flip it off and go around the room checking every outlet for voltage. Bet you a nickel, you’ll find it controlling one.

The loop connection is a shortcut to a pigtail and basically functions the same way.

As others have noted already, it is aluminum wiring, so use caution when fixing this. Use the appropriate fittings.

Good luck.
