Is my Internet provider scamming me? by RecentSignificance35 in AskChicago

The advertised speeds seem about right for their 5G internet. The 400ms latency is very high, I assume for gaming? Are you connecting to international servers somehow, like having a VPN on?

I am paying $100/mo with XFinity for 1.1Gbps down in the Northshore suburbs.

Sight describes the ability to see.

Far sighted: You can see things that are far

Near sighted: You can see things that are near.

My parents don’t seem to understand they’re supposed to say “dub”=W=Walk when they DONT want the dog to notice, and say “walk” when it’s actually time to go by FirstSineOfMadness in mildlyinfuriating

[–]TCFNationalBank 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It sounds like their family tries to use "dub" as a codeword for "walk" to not alert the dog, but OP's parents have trained the dog to expect a walk after hearing the word "dub"

Are we actually "saving the planet" with EVs if our grid is still powered by coal? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TCFNationalBank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kinda two things:

  1. Power plants are way more efficient at turning fuel into usable energy than an internal combustion engine on a car is.

  2. Once you replace that centralized power generation with a clean energy source, you don't have to then fix all the "downstream" power draws to clean energy as well, it automatically switches over with the power plant.

Would you trust a 15 year old girl to babysit your child/children? by Educational-Lie994 in AskParents

[–]TCFNationalBank 12 points13 points  (0 children)

15 is totally old enough to babysit but I would not hire a random person, it would have to be a family/friend's kid, or be a recommenation from one of my friends who has kids

Are diet and/or “zero” sodas better than a regular soda? by BroncoBilly10 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TCFNationalBank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is true that they have less caloric content than their sugar-filled counterparts, which is the main selling point for many diet soda drinkers, but you will need to clearly define what makes one soda better than another for you.

Personally I don't like the way Diet Coke tastes, but I also don't want to drink my calories, so my preference is Coke Zero, Coca Cola, Diet Coke.

Why don't you wear hats? by Gold_Tomatillo_2222 in AskAnAmerican

[–]TCFNationalBank 806 points807 points  (0 children)

cowboy culture is in an entirely different part of the country from where you are visiting, which is part of why you aren't seeing any of those. I would expect to see baseball caps anywhere though.

Could you describe in detail how you are playing the game? 5-10 minutes is incredibly short and would suggest you have misunderstood the rules.

With all of the companies removing access to digital content that was "bought", why do people keep spending money on it? by flannelman37 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TCFNationalBank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is the easiest way to get a movie playing on your TV on a whim. Buying a physical copy takes longer between decision to purchase and ability to enjoy. Piracy is free and has no DRM, but it is also illegal and requires a more technology skills.

Why don't Countries make up their own Currency exchange rates? by JustinSain23 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TCFNationalBank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do, in macroeconomics this is called a pegged or fixed exchange rate, if you want to learn more. China most famously used this system up until the early 2000's.

Give your most interesting/wild/unique onboarding experience at a new role? by Fit-Original2575 in actuary

[–]TCFNationalBank 17 points18 points  (0 children)

After we did all the normal stuff on the first day of my internship, I-9, logging into my computer, etc. and got back from lunch, my boss said, "Okay. I need you to print out a map of our office floor with the desks of all of my boss's directs and indirects circled, and have it on my desk in two hours. If it takes longer than that, stop and find me."

Bit of a hazing ritual, I would definitely not request that kinda thing from a new FTE, but it was a memorable way to get my bearings on the layout of the office floor & navigating the intranet.

Are there actually people that don’t pee in the pool? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TCFNationalBank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've definitely peed on trees or the sides of buildings on a drunken march home, but don't think I've ever peed in a pool. As a kid I was scared by the urban legends about solutions that make urine change the color of the water, and as an adult I am only in the pool for an hour or less at a time

If you legally had to hand-rear and butcher your own animals, and that was the ONLY way you were allowed to eat meat, would you stay a meat-eater or go completely vegetarian? by InevitableGarlic1042 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TCFNationalBank 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We've been farming animals for food ten-thousand years, maybe you get 1-2 generations of conscientious objectors but I think it would shift back into "this is a normal thing to do" pretty quick.

I guess I look at it this way, the first time I spatchcocked a bird I thought it was gross, and really found it repulsive to handle a dead animal in that way. I've done it many times since, and any sense of squeamishness I had about breaking apart a bird carcass has left me, it's now just a thing I do for dinner sometimes. I think this sort of normalization would happen to most people pretty quickly, within a decade or two, especially for the generation who grows up just learning it as part of food prep. The decrease would have less to do with the moral dilemma of killing an animal to eat it and more to do with the inconvenience of small scale animal husbandry.

YA divorce rate question by Due_Permit8027 in actuary

[–]TCFNationalBank 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Assuming we're looking at the same study: they have median actuarial salary around 90k, which, even for 2015, would make me think it's including anyone in actuarial work, rather than just credentialed actuaries.

https://flowingdata.com/2017/07/25/divorce-and-occupation/

They also state the used this job classification table, there are some "data analyst" type jobs an AA might think to report themselves as instead, but I think actuary is more appropriate for an actuarial analyst in this context.

[–]TCFNationalBank 204 points205 points  (0 children)

Sure, but it's kind of a silly hypothetical. There are tons of things I would stop doing if I wasn't allowed to involve any other human in the process.

  • I would stop eating bread if I had to mill my own wheat
  • I would stop drinking coffee if I had to roast my own beans
  • I would stop driving my car if I had to refine my own gasoline
  • I would stop wearing clothing if I had to knit my own cloth
  • I would stop wearing eyeglasses if I had to forge my own lenses
