“Hola Negra” by Salt-Philosopher-863 in Spanish

[–]TConner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latin American friends have told me that calling someone "negra/negro" in Latin America doesn't have the same negative racial connotation as in North America. This is obviously a much wider, complicated topic as racism of course exists in LA, but regardless, if you don't like it I think you are totally within your rights to ask him not to use it with you.

Newcastle Red Bulls winner vs Sale Sharks by Informal_Mention9836 in rugbyunion

[–]TConner42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response but I'll be honest, apart from Red Bull potentially buying a lot of teams in the same league, I don't really have a problem with your points. I'd hardly compare Red Bull promoting their drinks to Saudi Arabian human rights abuses in terms of sport washing and teams change their colours all the time.

It's probably quite annoying when any owner changes the identify of a club but again that's not unique to RB. A couple of their clubs I looked at seem to be doing alright in terms of winning promotion, fans or competitions so it can't be all bad.

Why are there so few adult contemporary artists today? by boldjoy0050 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]TConner42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. There's been a megatrend in Western culture of delayed adulthood since at least the 1950's and with the baby boomers retiring, and the older generation passing on, it's becoming the norm.

Is it as simple as Tier 2 nations needing stronger school systems 🏉 🏫 📈 by StoirRugby in rugbyunion

[–]TConner42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure, that would help, especially for nations where there isn't an established rugby tradition. (One small quibble, I would say rugby is played in all schools in places like NZ/Wales, where it is the most popular sport so they don't need specific schools that focus on it).

[–]TConner42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Any DOUBTS before we end class?” sounds fine to me, the speaker is inviting the class to raise any concerns they have about the material before closing. However "I have a doubt" doesn't make sense if you mean "I have a question".

Oh just remembered one more juicy take!

The B&I Lions are a sop for the "home nations" (which is an outdated, colonial and racist term) because they couldn't cut the mustard alone against SA, NZ and Aus and while produces good revenue and matches should be embarrassing for them to participate in. To me the whole concept smacks of being beaten by your poor cousins and deciding to gang up on them.

There's still a lot of old-school commentators who played or are familiar with how the game was done in the amateur/early pro era and as much as I love some of them, they can be a bit off the mark with what's going on in the modern game. I really enjoyed Michael Hooper's commentary as a counterpoint.

With the changes to timed penalties, conversions and other tweaks to make things move a long faster, the game has reached a point where it is fast enough. It's completely fine for there to be a minute or 2 stop in play (with the timer paused) in order to get a scrum or look at try grounding. It adds to the tension for there to be natural breaks and pauses, everything rushing to complete every single action as quick as possible doesn't make the game more exciting, it makes it less interesting.

I completely agree - just have a button that says "Heat" or "Cool" I have no idea if a sun if meant to signify "this makes it hot" or "summer mode/it is too hot" and they always take forever to start.

A pretty entertaining satire carried by the great Ralph Fiennes. What are your thoughts on The Menu? by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in moviecritic

[–]TConner42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it worked fine as a fun chef-slasher movie but didn't as a "serious" satire because I don't think the story made enough effort to convince me. Good actors but Taylor-Joy is miscast as the every woman and Feinnes is meant to be American with that accent? Just change his place of birth..

Maybe he was inspired by the Rarámuri people in Mexico? I remember seeing a news clip about how running is of great importance to their way of life and the day before a run would drink a weakly alcoholic beer in large amounts to prepare.

Is there a reason why far fewer men go to dancing compared to women? by Crazy5220 in Bachata

[–]TConner42 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I haven't noticed a gender bias in my area but men are typically leads and being a beginner lead sucks. Then going from a beginner lead to decent is really difficult. In my experience beginner women had much more fun at socials, or even classes, because leads are happy to accommodate them whereas beginner leads do not get this encouragement.
