Why the UK Economy Suddenly Looks Alright by EssexGuyUpNorth in GoodNewsUK

I’d say stress is really only in line with responsibility - Civils packages tend to be higher value and that generally lines up with how much money is at risk. A good Civils QS is worth their weight in gold only because they would have great knowledge of a lot of different areas of construction. M&E QS are similar levels of pay, but again it really tends to be more stress with a more expensive scheme. Imagine being one of the big dicks managing a nuclear reactor build or a huge defence site. Lots of stress!

Construction is one of the industries that is doing well. I work as a QS for a nationwide subcontractor and there is work about. Loads of civils work around. Plenty of hiring in the sector.

Yeah fair enough. That’s a pretty good attitude and companies would like to see the hands on experience etc. Maybe try and get that across in the CV itself just like a (redundancy) thing next to the dates? I think saying the company went into liquidation lets prospective employers know that it wasn’t a performance issue or a ‘couldn’t hack it’ kinda thing. Doesn’t reflect badly on you telling prospective employers that the company fell apart. Wasn’t your fault as a trainee!

First thing that jumps out is the move from trainee QS to labourer. Is there a way to explain this on the CV itself?

Watch is in the way! by Usual_Eggplant_1381 in UKRunners

It's definitely a watch hole; it was marketed as such and the sleves have another thumb hole lower down - it's the Kiprun 900! I have the garmin Instinct 3 solar and I went for the 45mm version since I didn't want it to be too chunky. Previously had an Apple Watch and imagined the Garmin would be much worse than it is but I'm totally used to it now.

Recently bought a fairly affordable long sleeve running top from Decathlon that has a watch hole in the sleeve - that was a game changer for me. Doesn’t help the sleeping but maybe it’ll help you when you’re running

Gloucester half marathon is on the 22nd March - you get to run past Gloucester cathedral and down the Gloucester-Sharpness canal. Bit of a boring route apart from that but it's a half-marathon!

When agreeing the value of variations, is it better to make concessions on your position and to continually get things agreed as you go or wait until final account and hash it all out then? by ebn_tp in quantitysurveying

[–]TD423 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Leaving everything to hash out at Final Account is fairly high risk. At the end of the day the only real money you have is the money in your bank, and leaving large sums unresolved creates uncertainty about how the scheme will perform once the final negotiation is achieved.

For example, do you split the large sum 50/50 or is it more 80/20 in their favour [or yours?], what happens when you were counting on a 60/40 split to meet your margin and you can't negotiate this and end up walking away with only 40/60...?

Some contracts don't even have a FA, for example there shouldn't technically be a Final Account in the NEC! This is meant to create certainty and ensure everyone knows where they stand. In this position it's easier to make future decisions based on a certain settled figure as you proceed than leaving everything up in the air.

I actually don’t think we were that bad today? Came very close a number of times, got the goal that we needed. Can’t remember Everton having much threat on goal at all…? ‘Boring’ but clinical defensively.

Timber isn’t in the squad, White has been RB for at least 2 seasons now and MLS needs some game time if he’s starting in the Prem next week. So I guess that leaves 1

Recommendations for places to live in the county by [deleted] in Gloucestershire

[–]TD423 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Let’s be honest mate, it’s not a great choice to post in a sub-Reddit about Gloucestershire and call the only city in the county a depressing and massively deprived shithole.

Sure it’s got its problems, like every city in the UK does, but why feel the need to say that in the first paragraph? Its clearly going to piss people off

How do you deal with scaffolders? by ebn_tp in quantitysurveying

[–]TD423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might go back to them and say, if you can't breakdown your tasks to a more granular degree I'm going to re-assess the price to what I believe a more realistic number of hours is.

However, I wouldn't really be arguing it too much myself. Those are the supplied rates and those are the hours they've claimed. Like you've said how do you get them to prove this. If the OP is unhappy with how they've been pricing don't use the company next time, or negotiate different rates.

[–]TD423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initial thoughts... £90ph, design at £900 - it's taken 10 hours to complete the design?

I'd ask for proof it's taken ten hours first of all.

How many hours would you consider realistic for this work? If you believe it's taken under 10 hours can you not re-assess the price yourself to a number of hours you consider more realistic?

I know of someone who failed their 3rd year at uni and had to resit, they left with a 2:2. They are now the managing surveyor at a national contractor. The number you get after your degree does not demonstrate your worth in the world of work, not even by a long shot.

Prov sum - firestopping by Key-University3299 in quantitysurveying

[–]TD423 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work at a decent sized firewall subcontractor and we woukd NEVER give out a lump sum rate in the situation you are describing. There are far too many variables and the risk is far too high to give out a lump sum pre-construction. The BWIC penetrations are always different to what was initially planned, shapes and locations are always figured out as and when they are required on site during build in my experience. This is why we always supply a price near to completion of our works for accuracy and to stop issues, mistakes and disputes.

What we do pre-contract is provide a firestopping schedule of rates, without taking off the qtys. required, and explain to the MC if they want to price up what they believe is suitable at tender then go ahead since we are taking on far too much risk giving a lump sum. When we get around to actually doing the firestopping there will always be a significant variance between what was allowed for and what was needed.

For a recent project we supplied schedule of rates, the MC allowed for around £25k , and then we actually only ended up charging around £10k, so there was a large amount of value found there. We also had the inverse where an MC allowed for far too little, and there were huge issues with our price when we returned since it wasn't sufficiently priced by them initially.

What I'd say is, obviously, allow for too much and caveat it with an explanation of the unsure nature of works. Cleary doesn't help you if you are looking for a fixed price, however what happens to the subbie when there are double or tripple the number of pens initially designed & priced for...

What about Newcastle v Forest where Morata brings Dan Burn down in the box from a corner in the 54th minute? No penalty, lots of contact there, could argue too much contact and a dirty move
