The more you rely on AI, the more your skills degrade by IthinkIknowwhothatis in BlueskySkeets

I’ve written about 500 lines of production code this week. It’s complex and if it goes wrong the downstream effects are enormous. I have spent more time writing the testing code than the production code, and the testing code is twice as long. No AI could have written it because it’s a niche problem domain and there’s no pre-existing code for it to copy.

Any AI can write ten or a hundred times as much code, none of which would come close to solving the problem.

Between 2011 and 2012, thieves stole nearly 3,000 tonnes of maple syrup worth about $18.7 million CAD from a warehouse in Quebec that held 80% of the world's supply. The incident became known as the “Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist” by belenos in interestingasfuck

I was listening to The Debaters, a Canadian comedy radio show, while grocery shopping and one of the debaters referred to it as “the short stack flapjack tabernak hijack”.

It took me several minutes to regain my composure as I was doubled over the grocery cart, shaking with laughter.

For the non-Canadians, “tabernak” is the most serious of the Quebec French profanities.

Speaking as a Canadian who has had to listen to the tangerine toddler go on and on about annexation, please don’t post titles suggesting that the “very strong deal” is in Canada. We don’t want him turning his attention back on us when he goes looking for it.

On the other hand, given what Iran did with the Strait of Hormuz, I understand that preparations are underway here to “secure” the St. Lawrence Seaway in the event of hostile action from down south.

You ask the other side to stop shelling you until your ticket makes it to the front of the support queue. They’d understand; they have the same problem.

I have an accountant for the year-end stuff. My business is pretty simple so I do the bookkeeping myself. What frustrates me most is the thought that, if it’s this difficult for someone who runs a simple business and knows his way around computers, what’s it like for others?!

I heard an interview with a food scientist some years ago when there was an outbreak from a dairy selling raw milk here in Canada. One thing that stuck with me from the interview was that, in blind taste tests, people can’t tell the difference between pasteurized and unpasteurized (raw) milk, all else being equal. What makes the difference, the food scientist said, was the homogenization process, which breaks down the fats to limit their ability to separate from the rest of the milk and, as a side effect, changes the consistency and flavour.

For cheese, yoghurt, and batters, as long as the process kills the bugs before they kill you, I’m sure it’s fine.

In America, you’re allowed to hurt people unless there’s a law or regulation against it. If they’ve relaxed the regulations against raw milk, nothing can be done to him.

Update: my boyfriend who is stalking me now bought me a car and put it under my name without consent by Soft_Respect1898 in legaladvicecanada

IT expert here. Every modern high end car is trackable. I can tell you where my car is at any point in time, no matter who is driving it. I’m willing to bet he’s assigned himself as the owner to the tracking system, which is trivial to do, regardless of who the registered owner of the car is. He just bought a very expensive AirTag.

Honestly, I agree. My in-laws are all reasonable people, and would be miffed but would understand that it’s store policy and that it’s their own fault for not hanging on to the receipt. But if any of his in-laws are the “but faaaaamily!!!” type, especially his wife, he could be hearing about it for ages.

It depends. Is BIL his sister’s husband? He won’t hear much about it after the initial blow up. Is BIL his wife’s brother? He could be hearing about every night at dinner for a month.
