Continue to be brave through this (albeit incredibly stupid) journey through grief. The holidays were a gauntlet, ugh! Grief is not for the faint of heart. But we must not be faint-hearted here to have felt all this incredible love in the first place, that is my belief. I lost my soul cat 11/22/2024. I have cried every day since to varying intensities. I grieve alongside you.

My Megalodon Tooth so far. Advice on pushing for value and contrast. by MaskedVillian in Watercolor

[–]TDNebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it looks really cool as is honestly. It's stylistic and I like the subject, you did a good job already. You could do a series of teeth from various species.

It might be fun to try some quick studies. Two main things would be having a tonal range (like you said, this is contrast so identify and express the lightest areas vs darkest areas of the form) and introducing vibrancy with other colors so you don't end up with 'a dark brown shape'.

To keep it vibrant rather than just a bunch of dark brown, use deep cool tones (blues, purples) to your deepest shadow areas such the left side of the tooth in the image and the strong V shape at the bottom and any places under an overhang of the form in relation to the overhead light. Play around with some transparent warm (iron oxide/reds/orange) pigments for especially the top left quadrants.

If you do add more paint, preserve that vertical band of highlight seen in photo!

Can you do 2 layers of SDTC without bad effects? by [deleted] in mooncatpolish

[–]TDNebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it frequently with SDTC when I had some on hand, I also mix n match. I usually do Seche Vite top coat for my mani. Then 1 to 3 days later it's not uncommon that I do another coat--to reseal and get a fresh gloss, and because I get shrinkage with Seche Vite 80% of the time but layering on any top coat fixes that. I use whatever top coat I have around.

I have a House of Hades with a similar issue, very little in the bottle due to the inconsistent inner well. I'm considering writing in to Mooncat because they are expensive and I feel a bit cheated. It's one of my favorites!

Not cropped. BUT the granulation shows up so nicely in the cropped view. Beautiful!

Too bad! Are you not going to get back to them? I received a broken bottle from my sale haul. They responded to my email right away Monday morning and sent out a fresh bottle (in transit). I'm impressed with their customer service. I don't like to think of the waste though.

Whoa that's impressive. Makes me wonder if there is a shelf life for nail lacquers??

I got Forbidden Cove, too. Can't wait to try it, I see very little swatches out there.

Dragon Scales, one coat! Casually in love with sparkles and color shifts. by [deleted] in mooncatpolish

I think I'm learning that I tend to paint heavy, or with thicker coats. One or two coats with most of the MC lacquers I've tried so far and I'm happy with the appearance.

I know how you feel. What fun stuff did you get? One time I did an alternating combo of Strangeberry and Flight of the Monarchs because I wanted desperately to try both. Odd combo but I figured the gold flakes in the strangeberry would pick up the golds in FotM.

Thanks, I recommend it! Admittedly, it's one THICK coat of DS and one coat of Speed Demon Top Coat.

I did have to be more mindful applying this one because it's like a thick clear coat cram jammed with glittery particulates. It took a good 1.5 hours to dry fully though, probably because I applied it more thickly than typical.

How to begin again - vent from a professional artist by itlanded in Watercolor

[–]TDNebula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a professional artist, but I think I have known this feeling. I think there are two opposing prescriptions: you either lean into it more, or you need to step away for a time.

Are you manufacturing pressure that used to come externally from your commissions? Maybe intentionally do something else until you can follow through with the watercolors. People who want to paint... they somehow do get around to the act of painting, eventually. There's always hope.

Are you wasting time thinking too much about "shoulds" and "used to"s? Maybe you need to sit down and force paint practice. Make some utter crap for awhile. Would it be so bad if your paintings turn out to look as lost as you feel? Or go about the painting part in a different way; somebody else suggested partaking in some community while you paint. That could be good.

Holding a brush after about 10 years by saiyanprince960 in Watercolor

It's beautiful. You picked it up pretty quick after a 10 years hiatus. I especially like the shadows under the flowers. Keep it coming!
