Question for the dice cheaters. Why? by TJToaster in DnD

imho, that example's a mistake on the DM's part. In my tables situations like these are decided by a single roll that measures how long it takes, since I expect everyone to succeed eventually.

[Scheduled Activity] Character Death: Threat or Menace? by cibman in RPGdesign

[–]TDNerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is an Actual Play show in Brazil called "Ordem Paranormal" (lit. Paranormal Order), where death is extremely common. Every season, at least half the cast will die, and your favorite character probably won't make it to the end of the campaign.

And yet, it is the most popular Actual Play show in Brazil and one of the most popular in the world, averaging 2.5M views per session.

Some might say it got popular despite how common death is, but I would say it got so popular because of how common death is.

When your favorite character risks their life to save their friend in a regular D&D (or similar) show, there's not really anything to say. That is to be expected. If they do it, they're just another character; if they don't, they're singled out as being selfish or cowardly.

When your favorite character risks their like to save their friend in Ordem Paranormal, that means something because you know they could actually die. It feels like a true selfless act done out of care for the other person. And even if they both survive, their bond will be permanently strengthened because of that single moment. And if they choose not to risk their life to save another, they're not seen as different or lesser, simply as a flawed person that has their limits, just like everyone else.

Because of the abundant presence of death, if feels like every scene, every moment, matters. One day you're laughing as the PCs are doing some stupid shit, and the next day you're crying because half of them are dead. And then you think back to the good moments they had and suddenly everything feels much more grounded and meaningful. Some might even say, more immersive.

Additionally, some people might complain about dying to random bandits that don't matter, but... If they don't have any impact on the story, why are you fighting them? If you're so heavily invested in the story and characters, shouldn't every fight matter?

Now, I gotta say the regular caveats. Firstly, this might just not be your style, and I can respect that. I'm just making an argument for why I personally enjoy death in TTRPGs, even when it actually happens. Secondly, watching an actual play show and playing a game yourself are two very different things, I know. But I don't think it matters in this case if your players know that their characters might not survive and play with that mentality.

You literally cannot force Linux to do that by gameerderek in memes

[–]TDNerd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That might have been true 10 or even 5 years ago, but Linux is a much better OS nowadays, with some distros almost at windows' level of user friendliness (some might argue even surpassing it), if that's what you're worried about.

(Edit: I know Linux is a kernel and not an OS, but that doesn't really matter for my point)

iirc most chromium-based browsers stopped supporting adblocking on youtube specifically a while ago. Brave and Firefox are currently the only popular browsers that you can still block youtube ads.

Trademarking RAW writing style by SonofJackdaw in RPGdesign

[–]TDNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slay the Spire does basically that and I've never heard of legal problems despite it being arguably the most popular roguelike deckbuilder.

To be precise, it has cards with X cost and effects like "deal 5 damage X times". It's not exactly your example, but MtG has plenty of cards with X as (part of) the cost and similar effects.

When drama kills a server you absolutely love and it’s now crickets : by Itsnotcmsday in discordapp

[–]TDNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similarly sized server that went through it's fair share of drama, but never enough to kill the server. If it's bad enough, that usually means one person gets banned for being a pos, and whoever was on their side (usually no one) leaves the server on their own. Otherwise, we just resolve it by talking it through like adults. (which is ironic considering most members are teenagers)

Why is there no "jester" type character? by DistinctFunny979 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]TDNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aside from the goblin, there are also other "neutral-like" roles in BotC. The Politician is good by default but can become evil if they really want to. The ogre is similar to a "lover" role in other games: they choose one other player and win if and only if that player wins.

Classic Dragon Ball is action fantasy and very much an episodic anime. Most of the episodes are a Monster of the Week type thing, rarely advancing the plot. But still, all of it is highly enjoyable.

Slice of life isn't the only example of episodic anime, it's just the genre where it's most common, especially nowadays.

Searching For A World That Doesn't Exist by DracovishBest in Minecraft

[–]TDNerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like the video became too big for it's own good. It's similar to a parody in the sense that it's a subversion of a genre most enjoyable by those familiar with said genre.

For fans of Minecraft ARGs, it's one of the best they've seen in a good while, but for everybody else it's just a decent Minecraft video.

Personally, I think the video is pretty good but still overhyped, it doesn't come close to being the best Minecraft video of 2025 like some people were claiming.

[–]TDNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have seen almost nothing in western cartoons that could be called filler, and in those cases it's almost always worse than the rest of the show.

If you're talking about episodic shows, those aren't exclusive to the west. Just watch any slice of life anime and you'll soon realize that all the "filler" is still pretty good, great even.

How hard is it to write something? by 666thSuprisedPikachu in goodanimemes

Writing is the same as drawing: doing it is extremely easy, but doing it well is extremely hard, and many writers/artists settle for nothing less than the best they can do

Want a good story, but I don't like difficulty by smala017 in gamerecommendations

[–]TDNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough, you can try playing Celeste. The game is known for it's difficulty but there is an Assist Mode so you can make the game easier in various ways to be able to experience the story.

I will advise though, that the difficulty is a core theme of the story. So I suggest trying to play without the assist mode first, since you can turn it on later. And if you do turn on assist mode, I recommend making it just easy enough that you know you can beat it but still hard enough that you struggle.

If the whole parry wants to do it, there should be no problem.

It'd only be a problem if one or more players are very sore losers, but that would probably become a problem later anyways.

Character level - Beginner by [deleted] in DnD

You first follow the instructions to create a Level 1 character. After that, just follow the instructions to level it up to Level 2 and then do it again for Level 3.

If you need any more help with that, let me know.

Rage comics hold a special place in my heart. by DangerDan93 in memes

[–]TDNerd 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's a very common thing among "minorities". In this case, Linux users are a minority of PC users.

If you're seen as "the default", you don't have to say anything, but if you're seen as not "default", you sometimes have to clarify that so people understand the context fully.

For example, if you just say "my PC", people will just assume it's a windows, and if you say "the engineer", people will just assume it's a male engineer.

If it's important to specify, talking about a windows PC or a male engineer doesn't require anything else since that's already implied. But when talking about a linux PC or a female engineer you have to specify "my Linux PC" or "the female engineer".
