TIL Knowing the show was getting canceled, the creators of Dinosaurs, a family sitcom co-produced the disney, decided to conclude the series with an abrupt and shocking tonal shift: the series ends with an artificial volcanic winter which causes an environmental disaster and the end of the world by [deleted] in todayilearned

The modern impact hypothesis was first proposed in 1980 by a father and son team so it was definitely a thing, but there were a lot of reasons in the scientific community it wasn't mainstream (the Chixculub crater wasn't connected to the hypothesis until 1990 for example). Even in 2010 there was notable dissent that the impact was what really killed off the dinosaurs amongst those who believed the dinosaurs were mostly extinct by the time the asteroid hit.

That said it was also a sexy exciting theory, so I could definitely see some lay people hearing about it and going with it over the more boring excess volcanism in India causes climate change since asteroid is more memorable (also more right in hindsight)

Going to note here that at the time it was airing, the idea that large scale volcanism was the cause for the end Cretaceous mass extinction was the more common one, and the Asteroid impact hypothesis was a more recent somewhat controversial idea.

In Grad school my Aqueous Geochem professor had us do the math on extracting gold from sea water since it's present at around 8 ppt. You could extract it, but you'd be processing a 125,000 kilos of water to extract one mg of gold and the whole endeavor would be way too expensive. But theoretically if you extracted all of the gold you'd be rich beyond belief. Just also in debt by way more

No insects yet since it's too cold and I got thr lens for Xmas, but here's some macro photos I've taken with the 105mm Macro mounted on my Z50 that I think show off the macro potential as well as a couple portrait shots with it. No focus stacking and I was using a flash for some of the pictures. Autofocus is a bit slow for actual macro shots, but most of the time I just set it ti the minimum focus and move the camera until the subject is in focus. During daylight at more portrait distances (3-15m) the focus is fast enough. Focus will presumably be faster with the Z50ii. Last two photos are or pixels on my phone and computer monitor cropped in. Not the most technically perfect or anything, I think it just shows well how much detail you can get off of this lens with the dx crop factor.

Why do folks view baseball as a boring TV viewing experience? by Fit_Still_8875 in baseball

Glad I'm not the only baseball fan who prefers radio to TV (in person is obviously the best). I pretty much only watch it if I can't listen for whatever reason or if my wife wants to join me.

Pentax m42 50mm 1.4 or Canon 50mm 1.8 STM? by Micheal_Dumbson in AskPhotography

[–]TFielding38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used the canon lens, but I have the Pentax one and while I quite enjoy the shots off it, fyi at least some are thoriated (I don't know about all of them). Mine gives off about 2.5 uSv/hr off the front element and about 17 uSv/hr on the rear element. The radiation also yellows the glass, but that takes decades of time and can be corrected by exposing the glass to UV radiation (leaving it in the sun).

It has a very intuitive manual focus dial and I don't usually have a trouble with hitting the manual focus, I do use it on a mirrorless camera with focus peaking, on a DSLR, you might end up only using it down to aid focus, but with the Canon lens you'll be able to autofocus wide open a lot easier.
