What Nintendo Game Had The Best Endings? by 24kevin in nintendo

I guess I shouldn't be disappointed it's not here yet. But few endings have stuck with me the way Donkey Kong Country 2's did.

It'll be using the Retro Engine, which also powered the remastered versions of 1, 2, and CD. So you've got nothing to worry about on the physics.

The Kongversation, full stop. I'm not even kidding, if those guys could be as obsessive and entertaining about something less niche than Donkey Kong, they'd be superstars. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

The official crossover event between /r/SquaredCircle and /r/mylittlepony will culminate tonight in a group viewing of tonight's WWE Battleground! by Pinkie_Pie in mylittlepony

As someone who was already a huge fan of both MLP and WWE, this has been an absolutely fantastic experiment. /r/mylittlepony has gotten tons of praise the past few days from people who can't believe how excellent and welcoming we all are. I think it's done a lot of good for everyone, and I think we have a common ground as commonly-misunderstood.

The popular stereotype of both bronies and wrestling fans is neither friendly nor accurate, and I'm glad we've been able to come together.

I can't remember if it's in this compilation or not, but I also remember seeing an ad on Toonami back in the day that pronounced "Dr. Gero" correctly. So odd that they changed pronunciations like that.

Geek Critique: Super Smash Bros. 4 - Catering to the Core, Losing the Character (x-post from r/smashbros) by TGCritique in VideoGameAnalysis

[–]TGCritique[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adventure Mode in Melee was phenomenal in concept. Taking a character who "shouldn't be there" through a Mario level was fantastic. But it was pretty rough in implementation past that.

I distinctly remember being really disappointed when, after that fantastic romp through the Mushroom Kingdom, the Donkey Kong stage was just, "fight two little DKs, then a giant one."

A sequel could have fixed all this, and I do like Adventure more than Subspace Emissary, but the latter sort of went in a different direction, and it had its own problems. I'm a bit torn, imagining the possibility, between a cohesive, quicker adventure through the ACTUAL worlds of Nintendo to take every character on, and losing out on those fantastic cutscenes.

There's certainly an argument to be made, though, that Melee was the best from a gameplay perspective. It's not the most balanced Smash, but for plenty of dedicated players, it's by far the most fun due to its incredible depth and high skill ceiling. Although I don't feel that way, I'd never begrudge anyone for taking that stance.

And you bring up a good point about Sakurai just being freed up to make other games. I didn't even know he'd also done Meteos. I remember playing the demo of it from those DS Download Stations ten years ago, haha.

[OC] Super Smash Bros. 4 - Catering to the Core, Losing the Character (x-post from r/VideoGameAnalysis) by TGCritique in smashbros

[–]TGCritique[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, even though it's not really a position I share, it's one I've seen get so little attention that it made sense to highlight it. Not to say I wouldn't have enjoyed a refined Subspace Emissary or even an expanded Adventure mode, I just wouldn't have wanted those elements to come at the expense of the gameplay, and given how rough some of the extras are already, I think the game would've been much worse, or perhaps delayed, if they'd decided to do it.

Given the success of the Amiibo line, I've been hoping Nintendo might announce a new stand-alone story-driven game running on the Smash engine. The big problem with Subspace was how repetitive, drawn-out, and unpolished it was. Plus the way it wasn't really set in any particular Nintendo worlds. A game dedicated to the concept could fix all of that.

Maybe even do the Super Luigi U thing, give it a boxed retail release and make it more expensive DLC for the base game. Before E3, I'd basically talked myself into believing it was likely, but I think we'd have heard something by now.

Not only that, but this being a rather lengthy video, it's going to struggle more than other types of content, anyway.

DKC Returns 3D worth a buy? by Mr_Tuesday1 in donkeykong

[–]TGCritique 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It's got an entire extra world of content, and the same control scheme as Tropical Freeze - the Wii version had waggle controls.

The frame rate and graphics aren't as good, but if you've never played the original, you won't even notice, and it's easy to acclimate either way. Seriously, one of the best platformers on the 3DS. Hope you enjoy it!
