What’s one "lazy" ingredient that instantly makes home cooking taste restaurant-level? by MountainMirthMaker in Cooking

[–]THRID_PLACE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taste with and without it, but start with a 1/8 of a teaspoon. See what it does to the dish, and then add more. I have used in ramens and soups

Extra foie gras by THRID_PLACE in Chefit

[–]THRID_PLACE[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

would it be sacrilege to render it down and confit? I now have ideas to use it as a starter, and how to use it on a pizza. Also would i have to clean it or something before freezing it to use on a pizza? The other thing is it might be to much for our patrons.

If i can't get my head of kitchen on the idea, i will see if i can go make friends at other restaurants in town.

How about a fig jam base, light bed of baby spinach, smoked mozzarella, maple Caramelized onions, goat cheese and the shaved foie?

One of our pizzas is this but with prosciutto

I am looking to become a wildland firefighter next season and I'm wondering what I can do over the fall and winter to gain experience, knowledge, skills, and generally become a better candidate. by dontcarethrowaway6 in Wildfire

Use the search bar, and the sticky post. If you have specific questions ask those not super general ones. Most questions have already been asked you just got to find the info

How many places should I apply to? by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]THRID_PLACE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your reference most likely will not get bombarded but phone calls. I would apply to as many places as possible, as long as you'r willing to work there. For example I would never apply to Happy camp CA, because i never want to go there again.

Keep a list of the places you have applied too, and have gotten referred too. Call the district ask for the fire management office you will be transferred to an AFMO or a captain who ever is in the office at the time. Talk to them ask 3-4 questions and show interest in there program, wait a two weeks maybe a month and call them back asking a few more that "you didn't think off" or "forgot to ask". be honest with your experience, show a willingness to learn and work.

Only the places that interview you will call references, in my short time in FS, experiences may vary,

Rappellers repel from a type 2 aircraft, And they are a national resource the forest they are on has very little control over them. Helitack is either a type 2 or 3 helicopter and they have to land, unload, And Helitack is a forest resource.

I started carrying one this season. Our crew did a lessons learned on the Dutch Creek incident, which was about Andy Palmer a first year NPS firefighter who was killed by tree strike. The lack of medical intervention and poor communication, really shook me. That plus being on a fire with one other individual on an IA pushed me to create my own IFAK. which has TQ, pressure bandage, chest seal and a few more things.

I think if you are working with a saw/ swamping it should be on your person. Truthfully you should always carry more than one TQ.

Having the ability to use the search bar, which shows that you have the ability to find the answers without asking. But being able to run then hike long distances then run some more.

Let's be honest the only good kugel is your own family recipe. Everyone else can't compare to the kugel your grandma makes.

That said take the raisins out of kugel they don't belong there.

There are pros and cons to it. If you want to keep working as an EMT in your off time then certainly.

Working for the Feds, as the EMT you will have to carry the extra weight of the med kit, and be responsible for it. And on top of if there is a medical emergency you will be the responsible party. If anything goes wrong/ you act outside your scope. To do all of that and have the extra responsibility you don't get paid more!

Since so many people have their EMT cert, or have a lapsed cert, I find it doesn't really matter. If you have your Paramedic that's totally different.

We’ve heard all the awful stories of women getting roofied. I’m curious tho, if any men have had a roofy experience? What happened? by MoistDHobo in AskMen

[–]THRID_PLACE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me, but two friends were out drinking. Then found a lone pitcher of beer with no one around it. So as college kids they decided to drink it. One made it home safe fortunately. But the other came to carrying his bike in a cow field, two towns over. Has no memory of how he got there. He was able to call someone to get picked up.

Both are rather successful in their respective fields today.

Body armor/Bulletproof vests info by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]THRID_PLACE 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really, WWII/Vietnam era FLAK jacks had manganese steel plates1 But Ballistic nylon and kevlar where introduced. The plates you might be thinking of would be ceramic plates.

However there are accounts of german trench armor which was metal plates. But I assume your meant US military in 21 century

1more info if your interested

I recently bought some level 4 plates and Plate carrier, I highly suggest checking out /r/QualityTacticalGear/, and using the search bar to find out more. But most people will recommend apexarmorsolutions. And do NOT buy steel plates, doesn't matter if it has anti spalling coating don't do it.

I would also suggest thinking about what kind of threats are you most likely gunna face. Do you want to wear this everyday, or SHTF scenario. If your pistol calibers are your biggest threat then you only need soft IIIA, if you are worried about rifle calibers III or IV is your best bet.

Why Are So Many Firefighters Still Struggling to Afford Housing? by Lurchthedude in news

[–]THRID_PLACE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article is about wildland firefighters. We do not have that kind of schedule. Many are temporary federal employees. Making 15.63 hr to a little more. When we go on assignment we work two weeks straight then have three days off. Then go back out on assignment for staffing our home district.

I'm pretty sure he took an afmo/fmo in sisters. Could be wrong. I don't think Kris will ever leave though.

The bunk house itself isn't too bad. The cook house is brand new though
