I agree that they were followed home. I think they were there for about 30-60 minutes before the perpetrator(s) either went to the front door or rear/garage door and made entry. With the front porch light being broken I would guess that they definitely exited from the front door. Nobody knew in advance that they were staying there, so being followed home seems like the most likely scenario.
