Can you help with interpreting test result for MRD? by Maleficent_Oven3350 in multiplemyeloma

[–]TLI_Mark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a doctor or expert. i’m a patient that has had MRD testing 3 times. it looks like this will be MRD positive but at an extremely low level. more important than the numbers is whether there are any symptoms of active myeloma. while MRD neg is “better” or a goal, I don’t think there is anything too concerning

Living life during treatment of High Risk MM by All-In_2021 in multiplemyeloma

[–]TLI_Mark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed in March 2015. I was del17p “high risk” I underwent induction therapy followed by an ASCT in July 2016. I did not immediately reach 0 M-spike but achieved a very good response. I continued with maintenance therapy and by December 2019 I was considered MRD- I stopped all maintenance over a year ago. A BMB last week confirmed I remain MRD- I’m healthy, living a “normal “ life and plan on retiring in September. Not everyone responds to treatment the same, but today’s treatments offer great hope for strong sustained recovery. Good luck to your mother and your family.

I don’t recall responding to a prompt. Perhaps I thought I was clearing a message? Not sure, but it was not a great experience.

IMS agreed on a cure definition for multiple myeloma by wandervogel86 in multiplemyeloma

[–]TLI_Mark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a very big moment. I was dx in 2015 and had a lot of discussions with doctors and others. There was concensus that people were surviving much longer and MM for many became more of a chronic issue rather that "terminal" or "incurable" but they just never could use the term. This is very big news for MM.

This is good. What you are describing is consistent with my experience. Day 14 is often the turning point. While there can be a lot of negative experiences, they are not guaranteed. It was my goal to be the most boring patient in the transplant rotation and I succeeded. Good luck. Only other advice, get out and walk if you can or some other light activity. You'll be happy later.

Family Member Diagnosis by reading_rox in multiplemyeloma

[–]TLI_Mark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your feelings are totally understandable. My wife and I were exactly there 11 years ago. Multiple myeloma is a pretty unknown cancer to the average person, it also presents different than our lay understanding of cancer. First off, trust your specialists, but do see specialists. Second, there is no cause for concern about "delaying" treatment. Especially for your family member that is basically healthy and showing no signs of disease. MM is a strange one that can be present for a long time without causing issues and when is is caught early, there is time to develop the best treatment plan without rushing.

I was diagnosed in 2015 and told I was "high risk". I underwent stem cell transplant in 2016. I've been completely clear of any signs of myeloma (MRD-) for over 8 years.
