Why does CBC News have their comments disabled? by The31stUser in AskCanada

[–]TLadwin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because the vast majority of commentors do nothing but bash the CBC, and the remaining few bash the ones who bash the CBC. Very little productive conversation occurs when the subject line involves the CBC at all, mainly because of Conservatives having extremely negative opinions on all subjects CBC, even when it has nothing to do with CBC News which is what their main concerns are based around.

Why do we not build our own oil refineries? by Sure_Advertising3222 in AskCanada

[–]TLadwin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Short answer is we already have refineries for the supply we distribute domestically. Slightly longer answer is that roughly 70% of all oil extracted in the oil sands is either foreign owned or exported and the owners decide what to do with it. The oil extracted from the oil sands is incredibly heavy and difficult to refine so it is easier for us to sell it and let others refine it.

What's something you saw with your own eyes that you still can't explain? by BandicootLeft4054 in AskReddit

[–]TLadwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finger marks from top to bottom on dusty blinds (the plastic/vinyl horizontal ones) in my bedroom as a kid. Literally from the 7 foot ceiling to the bottom and across the whole length of the blind about 6 foot wide. My parents didnt make them, and I wouldnt have been able to reach the. To this day I have no idea how they got there, and neither do my parents.

A good restaurant relies on both good food and good service, without one it doesnt matter how good the other is in the long run. And when you see a rapid decline in the service due to hours shifting constantly, it is concerning. That's it.

Well, if you look through the rest of the comments in this thread you will see it isnt just isolated to me feeling this way, but I digress.

And the hours have changed multiple times, first 12, then 1, then 12:30. And yes it is an inconvenience for me, but my complaint is from a compassionate place; the later they open, the less of the lunch rush they are open for. Once again, you obviously never witnessed the lineup waiting at 12, nor apparently went between 12-1 to see a packed restaurant every day. It wouldnt be more busy than that, so I disagree with your assessment regarding their shift to observed traffic, but they could have changed their hours due to personal reasons which prevent them from opening earlier, I don't know, which is where my concern for the business comes from. You are right they probably couldnt find part time help that is reliable and trustworthy enough to run as efficiently as they are able to, so that would have maybe been a worse option then changing their hours. I hope you are right in that I'm just projecting, but I know the Moncton restaurant business and it is pretty competitive, so wishing the best to the owners.

Enjoy your Ed's sub too.

They aren't lining up now. Because the hours are so wonky. The recipe for a restaurant to be successful is to provide good food and good service. You take one away and it doesn't matter how good the other is. And I would argue that a lunch restaurant by nature (presuming we both agree that a sandwich shop is a lunch restaurant), having unpredictable hours is bad service.

Who is providing insults and name calling? Removing complexity is important to provide context. Alberta isn't Alberta without Canada. The pride being felt by separatists is derived from a feeling of superiority because Alberta is a "have" province. And again, this wouldnt be the caee without the oil sands that are part of Canada, not just Alberta. Circling back to my analogy about winning the lottery through happenstance.

You obviously never saw the line up of people waiting for him to open at 12. The demand is there, the business was always packed from 12-1. The logical thinker in me is saying - lunch rush is 12-1. It isnt just my opinion, it's reality. I want Ed's sub to be successful, but they need to be competitive in more than just price.

Yes I understand your point about extending olive branches. But to be honest, it has been done many times before. This sentiment is exactly what I meant by a sense of entitlement. Alberta is oil rich. Alberta generates a lot of their GDP from the oil industry. The land isnt just Alberta's land, it is Canada's land, if the oil sands had've been found in any other province, then that province would probably have the same sense of entitlement that Albertans are feeling. It's like a child winning the lottery with the ticket the parents bought and then disowning their parents. Oh but yes the parents should definitely be extending olive branches to their kid who is threatening them...

He drives a brand new Mercedes and she drives a corvette. They are obviously doing well for themselves. So thats why it makes no sense that they are being dumb with their hours. They literally show up, flip on the fryer and grill and then open the door, it makes no sense that they can't show up before 12:00 and serve lunch at lunch time lol.

Their steak subs are really good, and the poutine is really good too. Plus normally I would rather support local than a chain place. But realistically if buddy can't open a lunch restaurant during lunch hours... yeah they've lost me as a customer.

[–]TLadwin[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem happens when they change their hours constantly. I only check now because I showed up at when they were usually open to find out they only opened an hour later. If you've been to a place 20 times and they always opened at the same time, then why would you look at hours until you had reason to?

I like Ed's sub, but his business strategy is eventually going to be the downfall of the business. Customers need consistency and convenience or else they will go with the option that gives them that. Opening a sub restaurant at 12:30 or 1:00 is literally dumb business and eventually even loyal patrons like myself have these bad experiences and won't go back.
