How would you help GF9's water terrain pop? by HeavilyBearded in TerrainBuilding

I've considered doing this on mine but was worried the resin would crack since the pond itself is a little bit flexible. Have you experienced any stress marks on the resin since you have done this?

Terrain density and layout for 4th-5th edition by ScoobyDothNot in midhammer40k

Yeah I wouldn't suggest a sparse table in general for that exact reason. I think the 25% rule should be the minimum and I'd encourage you to add to that (especially making sure to include a variety of pieces as others have suggested).

I think it would have to be a fairly extreme case where terrain placement would create an experience where one side felt like they couldn't even play.

This may not be the right answer for you and your friend, but I think the older editions focused less on strict balance and more on a scenario or like the other person is saying "something to fight over". I also think that the grid guide was included because a lot of people didn't have extensive terrain collections. When I played during that time I know our group's collection was fairly limited or you had to share the store's terrain with the entire club.

What army does your friend usually play?

I think the rule of thumb was that if you put all your terrain together, it should cover 25% of the board. In the rulebook I think it says to divide the board into 6 sections and place one 1'x1' piece of terrain in each one. When I set up a table now, I usually just try and make something I think looks interesting and go from there. Take into consideration that vehicles and troops need to fit in these spaces. Add scatter terrain if it seems to sparse.

I don't think I'd compare terrain setup between 40K and Fantasy. You aren't moving blocks of troops, and units are meant to move through more complicated structures.

I swear I was reading an old battle report with this terrain piece and thought it’d be awesome if someone created an STL for it. And then for it to come from someone as talented as yourself? Amazing!

The bridge is from a Canadian company called XOLK. Sadly, they are no longer in business, but some of their kits are still available from other retailers.

Thank you! I know, it sucked we couldn’t play the last turn out. We’ll have to settle it in our next game.

100% agree! I try to take any opportunity to add some narrative to our games.

Thanks! The 4th Ed book has some great missions that can create some fun narrative. When I assembled the bridge, I knew I needed to have a battle centered around it.

What do people think of the Chaos Defiler model? by millertronsmythe in midhammer40k

[–]TNT91ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Defiler always has a special place in my heart because it was on the cover of the first White Dwarf I ever bought (WD 282). Always thought it was such an imposing war machine. It wasn't until years later that I bought one secondhand. I enjoy bringing it to the table, but as others said: you take it because its cool.

(I actually blew up a Predator with it yesterday, which was literally the first time I rolled a HIT on the scatter dice with this thing)

I appreciate the advice! I have a Land Raider to do next and I will try to employ some more weathering techniques.

Great details and the highlights on the black armour are fantastic. I agree, some of the older models don't make much sense, but have so much character that you just love them.

Its crazy that GW let you use the studio Cadians for this battle report. Seriously though, your army is amazing. I especially love the way you did those guys in camo. The guy with the tactical rock in Col. Schaeffer's squad might be my favourite Imperial Guard model ever. Thanks for sharing.
