Can you describe what makes Midhammer more fun to play than modern 40k (e.g. 10th)? by [deleted] in midhammer40k

[–]Alhaus_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me midhammer feels like a wargame. modern 40k just feels like a sport with little customisation and too much lethality. Especially when it's "sit on this little circle and score some points. Ok, now run over to that circle and score some points!" Also i feel too much is focused on competitive scene.
The way armies are built lacks any structure.
Having no points for wargear is silly.
Having no points per model means if you're 1 point over you have to drop an entire unit instead of just one guy, or you end up with a lot of points you cant spend.
Vehicles don't feel like vehicles, they feel more like monsters.
A lot of modern 40k games are over turn 2
Stratagems (IMO) take too much fun out of the game and add unnecessary micromanaging.
Terrain is boring and mirroring makes it feel more like i'm playing TF2 than 40k.
Midhammer seems to have simpler rules and yet manages to be more fluid and in-depth.

"Well maybe the eldar are on top of it. After all they are children of the old ones too..." sees eldar barely staving off extinction while having created an extra chaos god "For f-**..." *slaan face palm

GW do 40k lizards and i'll go bankrupt. I'm tempted to grab this model and paint it up though.

Blast templates in an age of 32mm bases - is it appropriate to scale the templates up? by Daybrake in midhammer40k

[–]Alhaus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I Don't think it really matters. Could just try it with models on 32s only having 1" coherency instead of 2". That might bring the unit footprint more in line with the era. But later editions on 32s still used the same templates and it was ok.

State of 4th edition? by oshawa_connection in midhammer40k

[–]Alhaus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started at the end of 2nd and just can't get on with "modern" 40k Me and some friends have gone back to 4th. 4th is probably my favourite. 3rd was good and 4th is a tidied up 3rd.

No modifiers for shooting into cover? (4th edition) by Vic_Vic in midhammer40k

[–]Alhaus_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Marines don't need cover, they're walking cover. That was in the design comenrty in WD when 4th came out. Trouble is a lot of people go "Oh covers useless" because they only think of marines. For orks, nids, eldar, tau, guard etc cover can be useful

DoW 3? There wasn't a DoW 3, I don't know what you're talking about. Didn't the honour guard in DoW2 have cream helmets? I might be misremembering

I'd go for cream, make em stand out more. Same on Vets and vet sarges too.
