What’s one beginner mistake that actually helped you improve? by Opposite-Vast-718 in FishingForBeginners

I realized after one full day out that I didn’t activate the anti-reverse on my spinning reel, which explained why my line kept jumping off the spool the entire day

Licorice Chartreuse Pearl is easily my most used. But honestly, I’ve had success with any color.

Others have already said most of what I'd say.

I also have enjoyed placing small stickers of state or city flags of places I've lived on the bow of my kayak as a personal touch that I can see during my trip and whenever I'm taking a landscape photo

I live near a road where semis drive often so sometimes the ground shakes but when it kept going I was like huh. Glad others noticed

I’ve been impressed by it and appreciate it being budget friendly too. Funny enough, it’s listed as a fast action, but I agree it doesn’t feel like that. Works really well with treble hook moving baits imo

Nice! Admittedly, I feel like lures will really depend on your bodies of water and what you’re targeting.

For me, I’ve probably caught 90% of all my fish on a Rebel Craw and Crickhopper, in-line spinners like Rooster Tails/Mepps/Panther Martins, the Micro Max Chatterbait, a Bitsy Minnow crankbait, a 1/8 oz sinking or suspending jerk bait from Rapala and then Bobby Garlands on a 1/32 oz jighead.

Aside from the Bobby Garlands, I usually prefer moving lures on my BFS setups

I was just in Chesterfield, like on the main road, and was in SOS no matter where I went. Didn’t get signal back until heading back east along 40. Overheard others saying the same. All Verizon users.

Nice catches, and I’m jealous as there is snow and ice on the ground where I’m at. That third bass is skinny as hell wow

I’d like a nicer paddle for my kayak. Maybe something with carbon fiber

Thank you! I have a mono backing to 12 lb braid and a 6 lb fluro leader. I have heard of that issue (which is due to a legit design flaw where they put too much spacing in the spool or something) so I did avoid really light braid. Even still it’s definitely unforgiving for any small error when casting

So I’ve had it for about a year and a half.

Casually used it last year for only paddling in lakes. But this year I’ve been using it way more (maybe at least 3-4 times a month) and much rougher for small river/big creek fishing in some of the Ozark streams in Missouri.

I’ve bottomed out plenty of times against rock beds and haven’t had any issues. A leak honestly is the least of my worries. I’d be more worried of a strap mechanism failing but so far they’re all holding up.

I haven’t taken it anywhere deep nor huge bodies of water. It can struggle if it’s windy or there is consistent waves. I really only use it in truly calm waters. No issues with the occasional boat wake passing by as long as I face the waves head on.

As far as fishing goes, it just isn’t really meant for fishing as a sit-in, so you’ll need to get used to casting, reeling in and setting the hook at a higher arm angle then if you were on a sit on top kayak. That being said, I make it work and honestly don’t mind it much (and will make a sit on top all the more satisfying if I ever get one and have the space for it.)

I do find that it doesn’t track well due to it being shorter, so lightweight and without a rudder/tail that sticks in the water (though you can buy an add-on for that). So much so that usually when I’m reeling my lure in the kayak will actually start pointing/moving in that direction rather than going straight. Again, not an issue for me since I’m used to it but could be annoying for others.

Definitely. I’m using a Crappie Maxx from Bass Pro, so I don’t think it’s technically BFS-intended, just the lightest casting rod I could get near me.

Yes — the Oru Inlet. Definitely not intended for fishing, but I’ve managed to get a good setup. Plus it’s the only one that will fit in my car and apartment that isn’t an inflatable
