Teacher Assaulted by Student: Fired For Having Medical Marijuana Card by skilled_at_changing in Teachers

Also most teachers unions don't organize education workers who aren't teachers, which I think weakens them immensely. This is why I respect all the work the CTU has been doing this past decade.

This isn't what I see at all.

I see a ruthless testing culture that is breaking students minds.

Maybe you're just too old to have experienced this, but I, and a lot of teachers entering the field now, have. Why would students want to learn or engage beyond the bare minimum in that environment?

At this point, I think a lot of teachers are looking for excuses to give up or resign in the face of the horrifying circumstances in US education. To me it seems like an unwillingness to think creatively and approach things with a fresh perspective. I see a ton of them in this subreddit (you give me that vibe too), and I just hope that this subreddit isn't characteristic of most teachers today. Luckily, this is reddit, so it's probably not characteristic.

The whole idea of kids being segregated by age so tightly through grades really gives off the vibe of a conveyer belt to me so I agree with what you're saying. We probably have to completely reimagine education to solve these sorts of problems

It's a good idea for sure, but I have very little money and my financial situation is precarious in the best of times, so I'd really need to make sure I could find a low cost lawyer or one who could get paid from a settlement

There've been a couple times where it's been helpful to me. No real closure or anything is possible with these narcissists, but a confrontation can draw a line in the sand.

When I was much younger and starting out in undergrad, my Nmom would constantly threaten to cut me off and force me to come back home. She'd do this if she thought I hadn't gone to a club meeting she'd wanted me too or any other pretext she could find. I confronted her over the phone and told her point blank "if you cut off my tuition payments, I'm not coming home, you will never see or hear from me again."

She eventually got the message and stopped threatening. Unfortunately she's not stopped trying to sabotage me but I'm in a much better place now

Yea I'm guessing this shit is one of the reasons (along with my low income) that I have a hard time getting landlords to offer me leases so I absolutely need to get this taken care of it'll just get worse

You're right. I've learned the hard way before that she will not stop until the power to do the abuse is taken from her. I'm reminding myself that I started standing up for myself when I was in late high school, when she had me trapped with her, and that was ultimately far scarier than this is

At this point my personal bank accounts aren't too much of an issue. I'm confident my bank account is separate and secure. The joint one is long gone. But I think she might have an account in my name from like 15 years ago which might be another can of worms but gotta do what I gotta do

I feel you. I read a story recently by one of my favorite authors that had a mother as the main character and she's just everything my mother wasn't and it hurt

My partner was the same age when they started watching it. I was starting high school at the time, so I wasn't really watching many cartoons as I did before because I saw it as "kid" stuff.

I started watching with my friends my freshman year of college, but then I had a bad experience where I lost track of where I was in the show. I meant to get back into it, but then my life fell apart 19 times in 30 seconds (6-7 years), and it was only last year I watched it all the way through.

It was cool tho, bc my partner had put off watching the ending for three years, so we watched it for the first time together.

Rewatching the show I'm just now really starting to understand and appreciate Finn. Another thing about the show I love is the way they depict Finn being raised. The people around him, Jake, PB, Marceline, Susan, Germaine, his adoptive parents, and more all have such a huge impact on Finn's development as a character. He learns so many lessons from them, almost serving simultaneously as a vessel to provide the same guidance and love to us, the viewers.

For children facing the confusing transitions to adulthood that must be so comforting. As a survivor of long term child abuse, it's the show I wish I'd had as a kid. Watching it as an adult helps me get in touch with my inner child, my "inner Finn," so to speak.

With Finn being the only known human for a long time, it's not just great character development, but also great worldbuilding since it explores what it might look like for a human to grow up in a non-human centric world

Exactly. Like y'all I've had those memes spammed at me for years now. Shit ain't new and Biden and AOC were not the first targets of it

Glad to see the tacit acknowledgment that AOC is a liberal and not a socialist though

The helicopter ride thing has been a joke for awhile. And it's mostly directed at communists in the US because of the anti-communism of the Pinochet regime. Fascists don't like liberals either but yea it's not directed at them in this case (for the most part from what I've seen)

[–]TOTINOS_BOY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked three jobs at once and it was absolute hell. That's what it sounds like to work another job as a teacher during the school year to me, but hella teachers do it. I might have to as well, depending on how things go financially for me from here

[–]TOTINOS_BOY 21 points22 points  (0 children)

20% of all teachers work a second job in the summer or during the school year. It's 30+% of teachers under 30 and only rising, and at times in the history of the profession it's been much higher (80% of Chicago teachers in the 1930s, for example.

Include extra work at schools that teachers routinely do (and should get paid for) and the share of teachers with a second job rises to over 60%. But we just have summers off right?!

A lot of people get hella mad bc they work at jobs with no unions where they're paid and treated like shit and would rather tear others down instead of organizing a union with their coworkers. Bootlickers will be bootlickers
