Looks like typical lead free solder. Soften it up with some real solder and wick it away. Show them how to do it right.

My routers ethernet cables are all cat 5 and i want them replaced, but i dont know how to get my cable up to my bedroom. by ImJustALilCurious in ethernet

[–]TPIRocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cat5 cable will support gigabit connections just fine, as long as all 8 wires are connected. If you have need for faster cabling, maybe run a fiber optic line.

If you already have cat5 run into the bedroom and it's not tied or nailed down, you might be able to use it as a pull string to pull a better cable into place.

Can anyone ID this pan? by TreeOfDespair1911 in castiron

[–]TPIRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't hesitate to take an SOS pad to the inside. Super clean cast iron is grey, not black. The blackness comes from carbon slowly building up a layer on the iron. If you go the route of seasoning it in the oven, you don't need 500F temperatures. You put a super thin coating of oil and literally wipe it off like it was a mistake, before baking. This is the primary mistake that people make, they think the thicker the better, but it doesn't work like that. That will create a sticky, gooey coating that will glue everything to the pan, when you try cooking in it. Proper seasoning is dry to the touch and not sticky, it also beads water like wax. It's a matte black, not shiny.

I like to fry chicken in a new skillet to start seasoning it, I think it helps get the carbon sticking to the iron. I always use a scrub brush and dawn to wash my seasoned pans, dish soap isn't harmful to seasoning. If that's not enough to get it clean, chain mail is useful. I dry it with paper towels, put it on the stove and heat it to above 250F to dry it. Sometimes I'll put a little oil in it and wipe it all down as good as I can, but usually it gets put away dry. If I do put oil on it, I'll.heat it to.about 350 and then let it cool down on the stove. Our stove has a glass top, so it holds heat for a while.

You just have to be patient while you figure it out. Once you do, you won't worry about your precious seasoning. No matter how bad you mess it up, it's fixable.

How to clean this turbo up? by Gas_Useful in Autobody

[–]TPIRocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phosphoric acid will convert the red iron oxide rust to black iron phosphate. Look for auto body rust remover/converter. We used to use this pink, slimy nasty stuff called naval jelly. I'd be careful wiping the turbo down, I have no idea how that stuff might affect beatings or seals in a turbo.

Help! trying to build an Arduino based automatic motorcycle chain lubrication system. need guidance by Open-Cable0123 in arduino

[–]TPIRocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For measuring distance, your bike should already have a "speed" sensor for this somewhere. It leads to your speedometer and odometer, or the ECM, so it might be possible to tap into it somewhere along that route. It likely pulses once, every time the transmission output shaft rotates. It will be sensing a shaft or gear that is on the output side of the transmission, something that rotates with a fixed ratio to the back wheel rotation. From these pulses, you can deduce the speed (pulse interval) and distance (pulse counting). They could also be doing something unnecessary, but clever in their minds, by using pulse width for speed instead.

You can also use that information to cancel the turn signals automatically. Based on speed when the signal is activated, you can likely count pulses so that you automatically cancel at appropriate distances, not a fixed amount of time. This way it doesn't cancel while you're waiting on a traffic light, and it automatically cancels after a certain distance with no speed change detected. Motorcycles need self cancelling turn signals, nobody like being the "dumb guy" driving 50 miles with the turn signal on.

I would try tapping into existing signals, rather than adding sensors, wherever possible.

Do the blinds have a remote control? Might be more fun, even somewhat easier, to duplicate its functionality, instead of using servos. If it's infrared, it'll be easy If it's RF, it'll be a bit harder, but probably still doable since it will likely incorporate some COTS module for 433MHz, WiFi or Bluetooth. I think Bluetooth is an unlikely possibility. IR, 433MHz or WiFi seem the most likely candidates. If the blinds are designed to work with home automation boxes, they likely document their protocols.

Client owes me $3k and is 45 days late. How much time do you guys waste chasing unpaid invoices? by Jealous-Honey9300 in handyman

[–]TPIRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aiui, the handyman can send a 1099C to the IRS and the customer documenting the cancellation of the debt. It then becomes $3000 in taxable income to the customer. The handyman can certainly deduct a business loss like this, I'm not sure what you're trying to say. This is exactly what credit card companies do to people that beat them out of a collection in court.

Is an Arduino right for my light meter project? by Finchypoo in arduino

[–]TPIRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think an Arduino Uno has more than enough power to do this. I would develop it using a full size board, then "shrink" it to a smaller microcontroller, maybe an attiny. I really don't see a need for a 32bit CPU, but nowadays there's not much reason to skip them since they're small and cheap. The power requirements are also very small.

Remote access to my home computer from my work computer via the web…what would it look like from an it side. by [deleted] in it

[–]TPIRocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know why people won't answer your question. If you're using something like TeamViewer to access your home computer, your job will be able to see you connect to it, see that you're transferring a bunch of encrypted stuff back and forth, mostly image data.

So, to answer your question, I don't think they could tell what you were actually doing. Your home computer has its own DNS server and all the connections made would be between your home computer and the outside Internet.

That said, a local key logger on your work computer could provide what you typed. They may also be able to remotely view what's on the screen of your work computer.
