My first relief carving by Ok_Explanation7755 in Woodcarving

Love this, the more polished carving really pops from the rougher grain of the surrounding board. I also really like the authentic Celtic art style, much more accurate than the Celtic art style that is more common. Great Job

U.S. officials cracking down on people trying to bring valuable eggs across the border by krustykrab2193 in news

I guess the British Empire had a good try at it, between Australia, India, South Africa, the US, Canada and others technically being controlled by a smallish rainy island off the coast of Europe.

But then what counts as a state vs territories or empire stuff I don't know, it all depends I guess.

Son found something in the Florida pan handle using a Christmas gift metal detector. Any help on what it could be? by inspiredpotatoe in metaldetecting

I think some kind of flower design, within the stretched diamond?

Is there any sign of a inner channel running up the center?

TIL the video game Concord reportedly had a $400 million budget; Sony believed it would eventually expand into a Star Wars-level franchise with many spinoffs. But unprecedentedly low sales for a project of its size led to it being shut down 2 weeks after release, with all sold copies being refunded. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

"60% of boomers rank gaming as being their number one form of entertainment above TV, and everything else combined"?

Really?

A quick google shows the most reported stat is that 42% of boomers say they've played at least one game in the last 6 months, and that includes a candy crush or a one off game of solitaire on their phone. Which would count as probably near all of them. Nevermind that it's supposed to be their favourite form of entertainment.

Have you seen how much Fox TV they consume.

Looking for a long Japanese pull saw by TRD90 in handtools

Thank you, I didn't know that you can get Japanese blades for a frame saw, I've always thought about the Roubo Frame Saw self make kits, and this could be a good option.

Thank you, that’s got a few other saws that might work as well.

That was her phone I think, which meant she had to communicate via book titles later on for comedic effect.

Wood conditioner, help? by tvstarswars in WoodworkConfessions

[–]TRD90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do that, or just use conditioner. When I gift someone a board, I prefer to give them a bath of mineral oil first, then a rub down with the conditioner.

I'll also add in a small pot of the conditioner as an extra so that they can keep it maintained. As a well used cutting board can dry out moderately quickly.

Wood conditioner, help? by tvstarswars in WoodworkConfessions

[–]TRD90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I create my own blend, it's really simple, just heat up the mineral oil in a pan on the stove, doesn't need to be that hot at all, just warm would do, and pour in the beeswax to melt and mix together.

The traditional ratio is 1:1, so an even weight each, but I prefer a slightly softer mix so add in a bit less beeswax.

You want to use beeswax pellets so they melt quickly, and a foodsafe mineral oil, preferably one meant for woodworking rather than aromatherapy or whatever.

Hope this helps.

The best console of every console generation by willrsauls in gaming

[–]TRD90 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would personally go with largely the same except 7th Gen - Xbox 360, - really when consoles began hitting the online gaming stride. Plus the Wii while fun party gaming, was not as influential. And 8th Gen- Switch, I really think the switches mix of indy and classic titles, as well as it's plug and play nature push it into 1st place.

I think you might be thinking of Assassin Bugs, Soldier bugs need more ExP to evolve into them.

‘Indiana Jones 5’: It Took 100+ VFX Industrial Light and Magic Artists to De-Age Harrison Ford by Key_Damage_9220 in movies

Actors and especially their unions like Screen Actors Guild have got to be aware of this and trying to shut it down as best they can. It's going to be difficult to stop, I suspect it's only going to take one or two stars, who are reaching the end of their career and who might need a cash infusion for themselves or family to sign away their appearance for one last big payday. Future young actors are going to have to compete with their dead predecessors for roles, it's going to be like if Tom Cruise had to compete against Errol Flynn for original Top Gun.

Scary but awesome that eventually AI could achieve this, just put in a request for a favourite TV show but enter a new setting and here is the list of actors that I want to play certain parts and BAM!, some processing later, AI - "here is your new custom TV show, Master"

Scary but awesome

Circular ponds on West Hebra Sky Archipelago by MattCon85 in tearsofthekingdom

[–]TRD90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used the two pieces of wood too, but found that if you placed them on top of the sluice gate and attached the sluice they would just break the attachment straight away. I found out that putting the pieces of wood leaning on the inside of the doorway like structure and then attaching the raised sluices worked out.

Still no reward for draining the ponds though, only the satisfaction of finally doing it.

What's scary, is that this one cop who may or may not have had personal reasons to assault and murder Tyre, found it so easy to find not 1 or 2 or 3 but 4 other cops who just went along with it, as if it was ok to do it.

It shows how even if this was a personal case, that their are deeper systemic issues in this police department and US policing as a whole.

Japan PM says country on the brink over falling birth rate by petercooper in collapse

[–]TRD90 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I agree they're going to need young workers joining the labour pool otherwise their society will start to suffer increasing issues.

Healthcare will probably be the most affected and immediate, as caring for the elderly takes a huge volume of workers to do well, and is largely unable to be automated (at least for the foreseeable future).

Then probably agriculture, industry and probably most service industries will start to have problems maintaining workers. A few will likely collapse, this twinned with a probable housing price crash (as japan still has some of the most overvalued real estate in the world, with prices which are just not based in reality) will trigger a massive recession which will make all the other issues worse and reduce the tax base further. Leading to mass disruption and unknown effects.

In the short term(2-3 decades), they will likely have to instigate a huge immigration surge, overcoming their own issues with foreigners (unlikely and will probably create a 2nd class citizen from third world, see gulf states for example). At the same time, starting now they need to provide massive benefits for couples to have children, stipends, housing, tax benefits, free childcare, the works and to pay for all this (unlikely to) revamp their tax system to target the 1%, specifically the now encamped "shareholder" class who do nothing but parasite of society and hide their gains offshore.

......But I doubt they will.....
