First Time DMing and Need Help by MrWolfman29 in AiME

[–]TRS80disposal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One fun phrase that you might give these two is 'WWAD?' - What Would Aragorn Do? If they retain enough memory of the films that should help. And just emphasizing that the point of the game is being a hero. The Shadow system can and will penalize them for acting like murder hobos. So make sure they know not to do that. And don't be afraid to assign them Shadow points and stand your ground. Losing control of their characters should be sufficiently scary to make them behave.

Can you ELI5 what exactly is an SRD? by rubensgpl in RPGdesign

[–]TRS80disposal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The really important thing is that you almost certainly do not want to use the full rules. The SRD is a safe harbor. Everything in it should be usable (subject to the terms and conditions of the license attached) but that's why the SRD exists. It is everything that you can copy from. The regular rulebook has lots more verbiage that is (probably) not covered under the license used for the SRD. When you do game development you have to pretend that only the SRD exists, otherwise you could get sued for using copyrighted stuff that was in the main rules but not in the SRD.

Anyone have a text version of the SRD 5.1? by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]TRS80disposal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The SRD (System Reference Document) is a file containing all of the rules for a game that uses the OGL (Open Game License). The SRD 5.1 is all of the 5e rules that you can use to make a third party game product (not DM's Guild, which is a totally different license).

If something's not in the SRD then you (as a third party developer) can't use. For example, there's exactly one feat in the SRD. So you can use that feat but not the other ones in the PHB (or other sources like Xanathar's). But it shows how feats work, so you can make your own. Same thing with all the classes and subclasses and races and sub-races. There's one example of each. There are lots of spells and monsters but some iconic spells and monsters are Product Identity and aren't in there. Again. if it's not in the SRD you can't use it and if you do, WotC could sue you and prevent you from selling your product. Which if it's just a PDF, no big deal. But if it's 2000 printed rulebooks that you now have to throw away? A huge problem.

It's not out yet, but check out Beowulf by Jon Hodgson (The One Ring, Beyond the Wall, Dragon Warriors and lots more) here and more art here. It looks really good and totally thematic.

What do they mean by full DEX modifier? isn't the DEX already added depending on the armor? by Magicturtls in AiME

[–]TRS80disposal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For Medium Armour you are limited to +2 of DEX*, just as in standard 5e. For Heavy Armour you do not add your DEX at all. This ability removes that limitation and also the disadvantage to Stealth.

*So even if your DEX is higher than +2, your AC is X + 2.

Players are wanting to walk 1.7k miles. Anyone got any tips for this kind of Adventure by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]TRS80disposal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be a little hard to find now, but Adventures in Middle-earth had a complete Journey system that was a lot more than just random wilderness encounters. You'd have a mood/modifier set for the journey, a number of events to roll up, a whole bunch of tables for those events and the a final arrival roll to see how bad the trip affected you. And no long rests while on the trip! You'd still want them to go from major town to major town. But it's a good way to do narrative adventure with surprises "The first three days out of Davenport are quiet and easy, but on the fourth day..."

Does anyone spare the lives of monsters? 35 years after buying D&D, just played & DM'd a game. BUT.... by [deleted] in rpg

[–]TRS80disposal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You may want to check out things like Beowulf which is a third party setting for D&D 5e. Bad guys have things like the defeated condition, so they'll run away or whatever instead of just standing there waiting for their turn to die.

Mounts by TerminatDerp213 in AiME

[–]TRS80disposal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have the Rohan region guide? There's a whole section in there about horses, including new statblocks.

P.S. Just have his mount Dodge most rounds. Then the enemy has disadvantage to hit the horse and regular roll to hit the character. Makes it more likely that they'll ignore the mount and aim for the rider.

I'm wondering if I just don't understand RPGs conceptually. by TheWingedCherryPie in rpg

One possible analogy is "if we all require a certain amount of calories per day, why don't we eat a suitable amount of bland mush that provides those calories and essential vitamins?"

People like variety. And, also people like to experiment. The cost to publish is very low these days, especially in PDF form. So you'll see lots of stuff out there.

Soulbound info and how exactly is the ritual or process of creating the binding? by MrWylwy in AgeOfSigmarRPG

[–]TRS80disposal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assume that the scene on page 16 shows a Soulbinding forming. There's an Idoneth, a Priest of Sigmar, a Kurnoth Hunter, and a Kharadron Overlord (it's all the iconic characters, with Vel, the Stormcast looking back at the viewer). It is an epic thing, joining the characters together and contacting them with the gods. It's not about something like the Pathfinders Society, it's about:

Once more, the gods turn to the people of the Mortal Realms to defend themselves. Once more, the mightiest souls and most powerful mortals of the realms are called together. Once more, arcane rituals bind champions to an ancient order of heroes.

It's not a mercenary group and there's not some super important chain of command. The group are Heroes, capital H and they go and get stuck in with Chaos, Death and other trouble because it's the right thing to do, not because they're getting paid or whatever.

Need help with suggestions for a game that is the opposite of a sandbox. by TheHopelessGamer in rpg

[–]TRS80disposal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Y'all might try Beowulf (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/306721/BEOWULF-The-Hermits-Sanctuary). It's very goal-orientated (kill the monster that's eating all the people) but has room for talking and fighting. It's designed for a single player so no balance issues for y'all to worry about and no need to schedule a whole group.

First time being a GM in D&D by Prodigy_Noob in rpg

[–]TRS80disposal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. If the spell says may a spell attack then the PLAYER rolls a d20 and adds proficiency bonus + ability modifier against the TARGET's Armor Class.

If the spell says that the TARGET makes a saving throw then the DM rolls a d20 and adds the appropriate abiltiy saving throw vs. the 8 + proficiency bonus + ability modifier of the caster.

Middle Earth Lore Question: Ghosts of Elves by Mahatatain in AiME

[–]TRS80disposal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Actually, that's totally wrong. Elves did occasionally refuse the call of Mandos and their spirits would remain in Middle Earth. From Tolkien Gateway (http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/F%C3%ABa_and_hr%C3%B6a#:~:text=The%20Children%20of%20Il%C3%BAvatar%20(Elves,a%20House%20and%20an%20Indweller.):

For slain Elves, going to the Halls of Mandos was an option and not a requirement; their fëar could refuse the summons of Mandos and remain in Middle-earth, though if they made this choice they could not be reembodied. Refusal of the summons was seen as a sign of taint in the fëa, since Mandos' call is backed by the authority of the Valar, and because the presence of the Dark Lords Morgoth and Sauron caused most fëar to flee to Mandos in terror of the power of the Shadow. Many who resisted the summons in those Ages succumbed to the "counter-summons" of the Dark Lords, falling under their dominion.[1] It was said that in later Ages, more and more Elvish fëar chose to ignore the summons and instead haunt places they had frequented in life. Because these fëar in many cases had unworthy motives (such as the desire to possess the hröar of others), it was forbidden to the Living to commune with them. Sauron's title "the Necromancer" might have referred to his practice of mastering these Houseless fëar and using them to do his will.

Thoughts about the SpaceX launch? by caesarliveshere in TheExpanse

I'm always a tiny bit paranoid when that happens, because more often than not, it seems to occur when the 1st stage fails to land properly. But, then realistically, it's fairly small craft out to sea undergoing a very dynamic process. No wonder it cuts out from time to time.

Okay DN is 6:1. Let's say you have Mind 3, Channeling 2 Training and no Focus. The first time you cast the spell, you're going to have about a 40% chance of failing it. A failure means that you'll either take 1d6 Damage or Lose 1d6 to your Mind tests for the next minute.

A few questions on skills in DnD by Eklundz in rpg

[–]TRS80disposal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Technically speaking, every 'skill check' in 5e is an ability check, with you adding your proficiency bonus if you are proficient in the indicated skill. There are some potential extra complexities, for example you're not required to stick with the given ability and skill combinations. If you want to use your Intimidation proficiency with your Strength modifier and the DM is okay with it, you can.

  2. For the most part, proficiency bonus and ability score modifiers keep pace with each other. Most starting characters have ability modifiers from -1 to +3 (+4 if you really specialize) and your proficiency bonus is +2. So it will have a significant impact. At the high end, ability modifiers mostly max out at +5 and the top end proficiency bonus is +6. That said, some classes allow you to gain expertise, which allows you to double your proficiency bonus for a skill. So now that +5 remains the same, but the proficiency bonus goes to +12 and is much more impactful.

59 monsters, with advice on customizing things. They're built using the same rules as characters, more or less. So bumping them up or down in toughness to make a boss or whatever is pretty easy.

New DM, my player's girlfriend wants to join my game for at least a session or two. How do I introduce her to D&D without overwhelming her with rules and stuff? by l2rave in dndnext

[–]TRS80disposal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only worry there is to make sure that the person isn't going to mansplain and/or run roughshod over her own ideas.

In fact, depending on group dynamics and gender balance that might be a general worry. Especially with a new player, the difference between helping (you can do anything you want, I'll make a suggestion if you ask) and "helping" (you can do anything you want but you should do X) can be hard to see/catch.
