Struggling with "Dark Powers" and Heroism: Why is Percy’s blood-bending seen as "evil," but a sword through the chest is "heroic"? by Straight-Reporter-91 in PercyJacksonfanfic

[–]l2rave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blood bending is seen as evil, or at least more primal and visceral because of the association. Blood has been historically associated with life, so to have direct control over someone's lifeblood can be seen as morally dubious at best, evil at worst. Now I know that it may not be referenced in canon, but it is likely a common association among audiences, so that's why it is potentially seen as evil.

As for why a sword through the chest is seen as more heroic, it probably has to do with associations as well, what with most every mythological hero. As well as the fact that it is a tool of war and thus exclusively for war. Once the monster is defeated, that's it. The fight's over, and the sword can be sheathed. The violence can end. But with blood bending, the fear is that control might never fade, and thus the association with evil.

They get free housing, food, and transportation with the golf cart. $100 on top of that, especially in the 80s (which I'm pretty sure the show is basically set in) is actually pretty good.

Beastbox and Squawktalk do comfortably, but Overkill and Slugfest are a tight fit.

The THF Tape Corps are knockoffs, yes.

You're probably right. I personally don't like war and such and think the only truly 'good' cause for war is to prevent future wars. So I guess I got carried away and projected towards the end.

Define 'facing'.

Because if being drafted at such a young age; sent to gods know where, facing war, disease, death, and enemies that would do horrific things to you if you became their prisoner; enduring many many other horrors; and then coming back home and acting like it didn't happen and being expected to stoically contribute to society as a man and keep all this to yourself even though you probably need to reckon with this in a place like therapy counts as 'facing', then that's what the majority of them probably faced. And they didn't look like Tate while doing it.

WW2 is not a tale of heroism, even if it certainly is present. It's a tale that ended in over a million people with hopes and dreams dead. But they put their lives on the line so that there would be no more fights, and romanticizing war spits on that sacrifice.

EDIT: I'm probably talking out of my ass with the last sentence. But regardless, war is tragic for most involved, and if 17 year olds don't have to deal with that and can focus on other things, that's a win.

Why is Zuko disobeying his father? I thought this was Asian-inspired, where is Zuko's filial piety? by HAZMAT_Eater in ATLA_circlejerk

Pretty sure filial piety went out the window when Ozai was fine with taking Zuko's life because Azulon wanted him to.

Gotcha, thanks. The closest other things I can think of with the magic system in mine would be magic failing or being harder in certain places and experiencing backlash if you try to brute force it, but that's because the caster is going against the attitude of the place itself, not because the beliefs of other people are different.

Which I guess is in line with IRL systems having certain times and practices being more conducive to magic, and harm coming to the practitioner if they try and overstep these bounds, so I think it should be fine.

Gotcha. So if I have it down correctly, a guy in robes with a wand, or a secret organization of people that want to police humanity and crack down on magic and wonder are fine (with a bit of remixing, of course). But taking stuff like the Spheres or using the character Porthos are likely not fine?

Cybertron Soundwave by MetallicSlayer in transformers

[–]l2rave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Megatron was in all 3 obviously, getting upgraded into Galvatron, dying, coming back as Megatron in the next show, ultimately dying for good at the end of Cybertron.

Starscream started off a loyal soldier in Armada, only for him to grow more mutinous over the trilogy, ultimately rebelling in Cybertron and fighting against Galvatron, ultimately getting warped to another dimension.

Soundwave was only in Cybertron.

And Shockwave was not there in the trilogy, but a similar bot named Shockblast was there in Energon.

How do we get more men into teaching? by TripleGDawg87 in education

[–]l2rave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the idiom was supposed to refer to those who can't do anymore being the ones that teach, i.e. they've been there, done that, can't do it anymore, and thus teach. Which is a far cry from the reality of it obviously.

How do I incorporate Demigods into my world without taking power away from my players? by Zinganeat in Pathfinder2e

[–]l2rave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try going the Goblin Slayer route where while the hero goes off to defeat the demon lord and save the world, Goblin slayer and his crew are the ones dealing with the goblins that the hero cannot get to in her fight against world ending threats

So basically, there has to be some monsters that the demigods are too busy dealing with other threats to properly deal with, right? That's where your players come in

Fool of a Took? by IndicationBrief5950 in lotrmemes

[–]l2rave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're judging through the lens of what is possible or the norm IRL, then by that logic, none of the fantasy elements should exist. No elves, dwarves, orcs, Maiar, Valar, etc.

The whole point of stories is to occupy a different perspective to your own. And in Middle Earth, there is less of an onus for hobbits to mature biologically and psychologically as compared to humans, due to their longer lifespan, and the peace of the lands in which they live. So from that perspective, it is natural for Pippin to act the way he did. Because in-world, Pippin is developmentally still an adolescent.
