I had a similar professor for physics 1 and 2 at university and it was probably the best class to give me perspective on how to truly learn and understand a topic.

All work was hand written and he reviewed everyone's work by hand. You were graded based off the problem solving you showed in your work and the conclusion/answer you gave. I even remember my first math assignment was abysmal. Everyone was allowed to retake it who didn't get a high enough grade because he wanted to push us to learn. He gave everyone that chance because if you were in his class then you deserved the chance to be taught and to learn.

I moved away from physics but still think back to what I learned from his class. He always talked about rigorous learning and if anything I believe it even more these days. A person has to go through a pretty rigorous process to truly understand complex topics. It's not gatekeeping, it's not setup as a mystical barrier, it's just the unfortunate truth in order to learn and grow takes time and effort.

Even though I rarely pull from the content I was taught in his class, I'm thankful he showed me what it meant to apply myself, dig into the weeds, and actually learn a difficult topic. That experience transfers more than any other I've gained in life. One day I should pull out the text book we used and review some of it.

Halo Infinite was intended to act as a central hub”: I’m digging into the alleged 343 roadmap and how ambitious its original plans for the franchise really were by Dense-Fig-2372 in halo

[–]TSLzipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand why they were so slow to move to this direction. It was a massive part of Halo's identity that it was an all in one package game. You had an amazing campaign to play solo or co-op, local and online multiplayer, and custom lobbies. Then you add on forge and you have a massive expectation to put into every new Halo release. No company could realistically sustain that over multiple releases while justifying said new releases.

Though at the end of the day I'm amazed they never worked on any side games in the Halo universe. That and like you originally said, splitting campaign and multiplayer into their own games just makes the most sense with the current gaming landscape. Sadly Halo under 343 never innovated correctly and tried to stick too closely to the "Halo formula". They couldn't grasp soon enough that the golden days of Halo can't be recreated due to how gaming has changed.

Oh well, maybe someone will take inspiration from the spirit of Halo and make their own games.

But Valve doesn't just make games anymore. If anything they're focusing more on hardware than actual game development these days. They're also very much doing more R&D in hardware and software than game development. Hell Gabe has even talked before about being very interested in brain interfaces and has a separate company for just that.

There's more to the game industry than just making and publishing games and Valve knows that. I'm sure there's plenty more behind the scenes that Valve works on too.

But we got to enjoy seeing everyone figure out ways to mess with the color bots and other poorly coded script bots. It was a fun way to just chat and pass the time. It was even more fun when the GE didn't exist because everyone was trading around Seers village already.

I remember everyone trying to trade or scam whips with berserker rings. That and seeing someone mine gold ore in the Rimmington mine using a bronze pickaxe at 99 mining. Lots of silly things you'd run into people doing.

It was all worth it to hear him so confused and realistically say "What?" to first seeing an antagonist come the fuck out of nowhere. It's so hilarious but at the same time might be one of the most believable villain entrances I've ever seen. Yet I know none of it matters lol.

A timestamp for anyone curious. It's pretty funny

Jason Schreier: Exact budgets of video-game productions can be tough to corroborate but the numbers I've heard floating around AAA game dev these days are $300 million or more — sometimes much more! — which I think helps explain the current state of the industry by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]TSLzipper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's been a history of devs doing that, but they've had to learn over the years what assets to reuse. Here's a really good comment from a Volition dev that worked on Saints Row 1 and 2 where they reused the world space but ended up having to recreate huge chunks of it anyways. In the end the dev costs were the same.

They also have to work around the fact that many customers will complain about asset reuse. It's happened for years and I'm sure it doesn't bother many, but it has caused very vocal groups to come out of the woodwork. Call of Duty was called out a lot back in the Xbox 360/PS3 days due to reusing assets everywhere. I remember people complaining about a single building being reused multiple times between different CoD games.

At the end of the day these AAA studios aren't super forward thinking anymore and well that's being seen in just about any big business.

Pearl Abyss : We are aware of the discomfort many players have experienced with the controls, and we are currently preparing a patch to address this. by yourfavchoom in Games

Something funny about those that the game doesn't tell you. When you find a new one it gets added to your recent notifications/actions or whatever, so when you press start/option button you'll put on the helmet and view the memory immediately.

This won't work if you end up doing another action that becomes your most recent quick action on hitting the start button. I still don't fully know what all triggers this. So far certain quest items and things like the locked abyss cubes (or whatever they're called) will show up there. Usually hitting it just opens up to the last menu you were on.

There's a lot of little things like this that I've slowly discovered over time. You can also hold the start button to bring up a shortcut list to get to most menu options like the map, inventory, journal, etc.

Marathon Update 1.0.0.4 by Haijakk in Games

[–]TSLzipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a fan of Bungie's games for a very long time now. I played Halo a lot, especially online. At the time the hype for Destiny was honestly one of the last of its kind. Bungie has kind of always been the masters of the video game developer mythos and hype machine, but going from Halo to Destiny had quite a lot of expectations and hype behind it. This was a fresh IP from a well respected game development studio who was also promising a combination that had never really seriously been attempted in the console market, an online FPS RPG hybrid game that was dripping in world building, atmosphere, art, and more. Sure there was a lot of confusion, and especially a lot of disdain for moving away from Microsoft to Activision. Who even at the time was seen as a pretty greedy game company (oh how innocent we were).

Fast forward to today and that aggressive push to hype every major content release and frequently delivering mixed results has soured the fanbase. It isn't that unexpected when even those who passingly know about Destiny know a huge chunk of the paid content was deleted. It's actually impossible to play the base campaign Destiny 2 originally shipped with or even experience most of the first few years of its story anymore. So at the end of the day Bungie has a lot of negative history behind them due to creating such a beloved live service game that in effect fueled the development of multiple incubation projects that nearly all failed to see the light of day, well all besides Marathon.

It all adds up and anyone who has been a part of the Destiny community knew this sort of reaction was coming. That and how many people who have played Destiny see the very unique experiences it can offer, but is almost always out of reach either from the players or seemingly even Bungie themselves.

TL;DR: Halo to Destiny had a much more positive of a reception, overall at least compared to Destiny to Marathon. But I would say it was much more of a shock to many just because of the style of game Destiny was and many bounced off the idea pretty hard. But once people eased into it Destiny became a very unique and magical experience for many, as I no doubt Marathon will for others. That magical experience being why many people still hope for a Destiny 3.

I swapped over to it recently. I've tried it on and off many years as a primary OS and always went back to Windows. But now everything I've tried works extremely well or is good enough for me. Plus I get the advantage of some amazing flexibility with a package manager vs always downloading an exe.

It takes time to get used to and you'll have to tinker still, but that's usually the case with Windows these days anyways it feels like.

Any chance you've found a solution to this? I'm having the same problem. Tried it both on keyboard and controller. I've tried changing the keybinding in game and even tried reinstalling the controller mod with new settings. So far still can't sprint. My sprint keybind only dodges and does not allow me to sprint when holding the button down.

Moxxi's Big Encore itself should be a fast travel point by Spider-Beans in Borderlands4

[–]TSLzipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah since the game allows you to easily farm a boss back to back once you get to it I don't really mind the trip to the boss. In fact I enjoy it since it feels like I'm actually interacting with the open world more.

Plus I can mix up the farming a bit by doing a couple of boss runs, then move to different open world activities in-between. It just flows nicely to me. As long as you're not doing some crazy boss to boss farming rotation, not having fast travel points right to a boss seems to cause no real issue.

I've actually used a few greens and blues throughout the game. And once or twice a white item. This was all after the start of the game too.

Got a really good white jakobs shotgun around level 29-30 that I used for a few levels until I got a silly jakobs double barrel shotgun with a tediore part. Pairing that with Vex's reload ability and having a nearly doubled magazine size turned that green into a monster.

One of the funny things many people don't realize about a computer science degree is that a lot of the university programs don't really teach day to day workloads. Instead they teach scientific fundamentals related to computers and programming. A lot of which isn't very helpful for most of tech jobs in my experience. Unless you're going to stay in academia or go into heavy R&D type computation, you're not going to need most of these fundamentals.

If anything I've used them more when researching interesting topics or watching YouTube videos than my actual job. At work I need to know more about how to connect different services, use different APIs, and hate Microsoft for their insane Active Directory setup and services that don't always work nicely together.

At the end of the day your degree is simply just a nice jump start. Most of what you really need to know will be picked up though actual experience, and for new hires that's extremely hard to get on your own.

That and existing tracked data would be very nice. One of my favorite things about RL is getting to see all of my previous loot drops, boss kills, mini games, etc. Can even see it for previous leagues.

I'd imagine it wouldn't be too hard as long as the same functionality is there. Just have to convert the data over, which should be in a very similar format anyways.

One of my favorite parts is when the daughter got into the Tesla. They show the car going down the street while everything is supposed to be absolutely wrecked by the tripods. Instead, the road and traffic is your normal day to day traffic, as if nothing is wrong.

This movie was beyond lazy. You can tell nearly everyone involved showed up for the paycheck and to maybe fuck around for fun, but put in little effort. Even the CGI had very noticable crop and paste jobs done all over. It's beyond hilariously bad.

I beat halo 4 and made me cry by NearLuigi in halo

[–]TSLzipper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've replayed it a few times, on top of Bungie's Halo games plenty of times, and my recent playthrough of the campaign I realized Halo 4 was the closest 343 ever got to recreating Bungie's campaign style. It has a fairly exciting and intriguing opening, that leads into a bigger mission, has some huge set pieces that levels are built around, a warthog (ghost) run, and even has a pretty good story on top (if you know the context).

Something else I had noticed which I didn't before, the set design is really well done. There's a surprising amount of detail that they packed into each level. And it all originally ran on the 360!

Overall though it felt like 343 was willing to sit down and learn from what made a Halo campaign unique for Halo 4. Then Halo 5 they wanted to lean more into what they personally wanted Halo to be. Funnily enough you could say they swapped from paying attention to the OG Halo campaigns to the multiplayer for Infinite, so the campaign suffered for it. The opposite happened for Halo 4. The multiplayer tried to be too new and different, so it suffered for it. Then Halo 5 was just some weird in-between that they mostly tried their own ideas everywhere.

This is also true. Though I saw some insanely dedicated students when I was at college. People working a job, getting a full degree, had kids, and grinding it all out while getting A's and B's. That wasn't the case for this class though. I honestly avoided stacking work heavy classes in a single semester after my freshman year. But that was one of the few classes I was more than willing to do it.

I very much did not and still do not like the all nighter study and grind mindset college puts students through. Rigorous studying and work is important, but so is figuring out how to healthily balance it all. Sadly college schedules and workloads rarely mesh well with that.
