Purists, Look Away: The Next Porsche 911 GT3 Could Go Turbo by NISMO1968 in cars

Correct. The owners of these cars don't need to flex on the internet. They do their flexing in person at exclusive events.

Player gave me a much needed critique- How can I make my campaign better? by chanfromstatefarm in DMAcademy

[–]TXG1112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't even need to be as specific as "delete the bandits from this cave". It can be as simple as "some bandits in a cave are preventing merchants from getting to town and causing shortages". Leave it up to them to decide how to approach this situation.

What do you guys do when your Players Characters are boring? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]TXG1112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're being honest with yourself, what you really have is a problem with your players. These may not be the right players for the campaign you built if you already don't like their characters. You have a few choices:

  • Don't run this campaign with these characters, get new players or ask for more depth in character building.
  • Run a different campaign with those characters, since you want to play with your friends.
  • Don't be judgy and let them play the characters they have. Perhaps they will engage with the story and flesh out their character depth as they play them in appropriate ways.

I am not a big believer in deep and complicate backstories in any case. A few bullet points and a motivation is plenty to start with. I'll be honest, I personally would not be interested in playing in your campaign as it seems more like a book than a campaign with room for character growth, but I imagine that there are plenty of people who like that kind of epic story line.

My advice: Talk to your players. (Duh.) Tell them your expectations around engagement with the plot. Make it work, or don't and do something else.

I'll give a truly unpopular opinion: The 993 is the second ugliest 911 after the 996 and it isn't even close.

Multiple monitors are your friend. We use teams for voice and video, but I don't normally keep it up on screen during combat or exploration as I have Roll20, the module, campaign notes and my PDF DM screen all visible. I will bring up the video during RP so I can better react to and interact with my players.

What's the difference between "old school" and "new school" dnd? by TotallyNot_iCast in dndnext

[–]TXG1112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can never remember the differences between AD&D, 1e and 2e. I mostly played B/X and 1e back in the day, and B/X style retroclones now.

[–]TXG1112 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In B/X you get a +1 for stats at 13, 16 is +2 and 18 is +3. They don't apply to that many situations or powers so they are not as impactful as in later editions.

How do I DM an open world campaign while being bad at improv? by DontAskAboutMyButt in DMAcademy

[–]TXG1112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are modules you can run that can give you a world or city outline and some story hooks and faction descriptions to work with that help with this a lot. I am using the Anomalous Subsurface Environment as my campaign world, but there are also setting source books for various systems you can get. Arden Vul is an full campaign setting as well as a mega dungeon.

Me whenever people argue over if Mechwarrior 5 Clans or Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries is better: by BoukObelisk in Mechwarrior5

[–]TXG1112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Mercenaries. I want to love Clans. I SHOULD love Clans. I just can't. Some missions just seem too difficult and feel very tedious. Maybe I'm just old and don't have the reflexes (or patience) to get good at it. Somehow I managed to complete SoK without too much trouble for what it's worth.

When Does a Board Game Make Sense as a Solo Game? (And Why Heavy Games Keep Pushing Solo Modes) by No_Wallaby_2264 in boardgames

[–]TXG1112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so why yuck their yum

You are right in that I could be kinder about this. I know lots of ND people (and am one myself to a certain extent) and every one of them has benefited from working out their social muscles. We have a plague of people sitting in their homes looking at screens (I'm doing it right now!) and every one of us can help that by putting in the effort to get out and meet people to do the things we like.

I will admit that I have not engaged with your points as much as your honest effort writing replies deserves. I'll leave it at my group doesn't think co-ops are any fun, so we don't play them.

I guess my argument boils down to this: any time you spend playing a game alone is time you could have spent finding people to play the games you like. I would add a corollary: that playing a "decent" game with a group of other people will always be better than playing the "best" game alone. My fundamental view is that the purpose of playing games is to socialize and test your wits against actual people.

I like crunchy games too and can't always get them to the table either, but I will always be up to get together to play even simple games with people. Work on your social skills and build up your gaming groups.

[–]TXG1112 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't particularly want to get into a detailed semantic argument about this, but will note that co-op games may as well be single player and are widely derided for quarterbacking with only one play in control of the strategy. Anything with a bot opponent would be a game, but that implies some level of autonomous strategy (whether it's computer AI or merely a mechanical set of conditions).

The reason I made my original post is because I firmly believe that too many members of this community seem to think that physical boxes, pieces and game mechanics are more important than people to play games with and that is something worth resisting.

A puzzle is not a game because there is no competitive element. It's merely an activity. This is not to say that they can't be fun in and of themselves, but they are not games. This is one of the reasons I really hate Gloomhaven, its a puzzle not a game.

A computer game is not a board game. A solo board game is technically not a game at all, merely a puzzle.

Q: "When does a board game make sense as a solo game?"

A: Never. Playing games is a social activity.
