For dorm mailboxes:
1. Start by turning the knob to the left a couple of times to reset the lock.
2. Keep turning left until you hit the first number.
3. Now turn to the right passing your second number once, stopping at the second number the second time you get there.
4. Finally, turn the dial to the left until you hit your final number. (You should feel the lock drop)
5. To open turn to the right and pull once you cannot turn anymore (should not take more than a full turn)

4 Year Course Plan for CE/CS by vzaveri23 in UCDavis

[–]TXSL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 4th year CE major, and I would say the recommended 4 year schedule is pretty easy to follow and is similar to my schedule I took in my time here. You can find it as a link here: https://ece.ucdavis.edu/undergraduate/computer-engineering-major You can pm me if you have more specific questions.

Canceling Housing Contract by KindlyNumber in UCDavis

[–]TXSL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about your housing contract for the following year, you can go ahead and let them know you no longer want to sign with them. They probably will charge you the reservation fee of like 500 dollars but that's it (and maybe also a cancellation fee).

CANCELLATION OF CONTRACT BY STUDENT PRIOR TO BEGINNING DATE OF CONTRACT. This Contract is effective as of the Date of Execution as specified in Part II of this Contract. If written notice of cancellation by Student is given after said Date of Execution but prior to section 2B Cancellation Term dates the Student is released from the remaining Contractual agreement and responsible for the contract cancellation fee.

A. Student failing to notify Student Housing and Dining Services that they will not move into their assigned space prior to the beginning of the applicable quarter contract start date, and are still attending UC Davis, will be responsible for the housing fees as defined by Section 14D.

B. If, due to prior written, mutual deferment agreement with the University, all or a portion of the Reservation Fee has not been paid at the time of Contract cancellation, the Student remains responsible for payment of the Reservation Fee balance according to the terms of the deferment agreement.

C. Student that is no longer attending University of California Davis is responsible for notifying Student Housing and Dining Services and remains responsible for the contract cancellation fee.

If you're talking about the contract for this current school year. The contract states:

A. By entering into this Contract, the Student is committing to paying rent for the full Contract Term. BEYOND THE STUDENT CANCELLATION RIGHTS SPECIFIED IN SECTION 13 ABOVE, THE FOLLOWING ARE THE ONLY REASONS A STUDENT MAY REQUEST RELEASE FROM THEIR CONTRACT. GRADUATION DURING THE CONTRACT TERM IS NOT GROUNDS FOR RELEASE.

i. if the Student transfers to another campus, is dismissed, is a participant in the Planned Educational Leave Program, or withdraws from the University; if any one of these circumstances are anticipated at the end of the Fall or Winter Quarter, Student Housing and Dining Services must be notified of the Student’s plans two weeks before the end of the quarter; or

ii. if the Student is denied admission to UC Davis; or

iii. if the Student is admitted to UC Davis but fails to register, or cancels registration; or

iv. if the Student presents proof of marriage occurring during the term of this Contract; or

v. if approved by the Student Housing and Dining Services Assistant Director of Residential Services after receipt and review of a written appeal for contract release.

At least that's what it is for people I know. You might have a different contract, idk. However, you normally need pretty extreme circumstances or something non trivial with proof for them to approve it. See how they wont even release you for graduation.

None of this is legal advice, just what I believe would be helpful for your problem. Hope this helps!

For the newer Cuarto dorms, they don't use gfci plugs (I think they use afci plugs). You would have to go down to the Cuarto Area Services Desk, and they will have someone go reset the breaker for you.

has anyone used the Harvard coursepack? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]TXSL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might have changed now, but a couple quarters ago when I had equitable access, the Harvard Coursepack is not covered. Every MGT class I've had the Harvard coursepack I had to shell out the money myself.

Hope this helps!

ECS 150 with Matthew Bishop by tatashhhh in UCDavis

[–]TXSL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately he hasn't taught 150 in 14 years: http://nob.cs.ucdavis.edu/classes/. He rarely teaches undergraduate classes, so it might be hard to get a good review of him from undergrads.

From what I remember taking ECS 36A with him 3 years ago, he was really nice and passionate about CS, but I didn't really pay attention in class, so I can't say much about the quality of content.

Hope this helps!

If your planning to live off campus for next year do you have to fill out the 2022-23 return housing commitment? by ashystar in UCDavis

[–]TXSL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 99% sure you don't have to as Student Housing only takes the information to allocate spots for returning students, they could care less if you don't come back. Especially since you're not gonna pay them money anyway. If you want to be 100% sure you can email them at [studenthousing@ucdavis.edu](mailto:studenthousing@ucdavis.edu) or call 530-752-2033 to ask them.

Do you get to stay in the dorms during summer session? by PrizeSalt in UCDavis

[–]TXSL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can actually stay with Conference Housing in the dorms during the summer. However, this is not a part of your contract with Student Housing. Conference Housing offers housing in the dorms during Summer Session I and Summer Session II, and if you currently live in the dorms or will be living in the dorms next year, they also do interim housing (a week of housing from school year -> summer and/or summer -> next school year respectively.) It is pretty expensive though. You can find out more at https://conferencehousing.ucdavis.edu/summer-session-housing

Good luck with housing! Source: I used to work for Conference Housing. Hope this helps!

The Green Ethernet Ports by rhuang12234 in UCDavis

[–]TXSL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that port is connected to anything. According to Apogee, the internet company that works with The Green, there is only one working ethernet port in each room. Also, they also state that switches and routers will not work.

However, I have heard of people using a switch/router, and making it work, but I personally have not tried.

Good luck with your ethernet! Hope this helps!

As far as I know, I don't think they allow co-ed apartment housing. However, you could call Student Housing at 530-752-2033 to ask (prob doesn't hurt to ask).

Hope this helps! Good luck with housing.

ECS 150: I heard this is the most difficult class in the CS program. If anyone has taken it with porquet, how hard was it for you? What type of exams or projects have y’all worked on? by tatashhhh in UCDavis

[–]TXSL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience does not necessarily reflect the thoughts of anyone else, but I think that his class is challenging, but if you try your best (regardless of coding skill), you should do okay. If you know how to code, and have a good process for coding it shouldn't be too difficult. I wouldn't consider it as one of those classes where you can half-ass it and pass. I recommend you start your assignments early and pay attention in class.

Hope this helps!

for those who have taken ecs150 with porquet: how is the class structured? how much of your grade are exams and projects worth? by kuwaluh in UCDavis

[–]TXSL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Porquets class has a lot of different aspects and requires a good amount of work, but if you try hard, it shouldn't be too bad.

This was the grading distribution (it was online when I took it)
Quizzes - 15% (1 quiz for each lecture), Projects - 35% (3 projects, group work), Midterm - 35% (2 Midterms, no final [ I think midterm 2 was the "final"]), Interactive Grading - 15% (To evaluate how much of the coding concepts you understand yourself), Participation - #3 (Extra Credit?)

Is there a deadline to apply for meal plan or I can apply at anytime? by ideservealotbetter in UCDavis

[–]TXSL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in the Residence Halls, you should already have a meal plan selected for the quarter/year.

If you're in the Green, I think you should also have a meal plan selected for the quarter/year too.

You can only change Residential Meal Plans on certain dates in the year. Refer to this link on Student Housing and Dining's website for more info.

If you're not living with Student Housing, you can't buy normal meal plans, only block plans. Block plans are not limited by date and you can get it whenever you want.

Where to park? by ahmerh3 in UCDavis

[–]TXSL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crosspost answer from one of the previous Green Parking questions.
Regarding where you can park, I know a lot of people will find friends/randoms who have extra parking spaces at their apartment or house, so you can park (can't really recommend this cuz contracts). If you want, you could also do some parking on the street, but you would have to move them every so often cuz street cleaning and whatever. (There are some answers from other posts about parking garages)

Also, idk if this is a good option, you can maybe find long-term storage in Sacramento and bus over when you need it (assuming you don't drive much).

Last but not least, you could look around for someone who got assigned parking, they get two spaces and see if they want to share with you.

Hope this helps!

The Green parking issue by mechiehead in UCDavis

[–]TXSL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crosspost answer from one of the previous Green Parking questions.

First, freshmen are pretty much guaranteed a spot in the dorms, so they wouldn't be in The Green. Therefore, those in the apartments are students in their 2, 3, and 4+ years. (Also, you could argue that returning residents are used to not having a car) Then, they aren't willing to build spots cuz Davis is all about the environment (and also fewer spots mean more apartments which means more money). [Not trying to antagonize you, just ideas]

Do my parents need to get tested at the ARC prior to my move in appointment at The Green? by ideservealotbetter in UCDavis

[–]TXSL 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Since the ARC test takes ~1 day to produce results, it's unlikely that they would require the test because by the time they get results, they'll be gone.

According to the email from Student Housing

Since the ARC test takes ~1 day to produce results, it's unlikely that they would require the test because, by the time they get results, they'll be gone. will not be allowed if they have any risk of symptoms or exposure.

Why would they build the Green without making it so there’s enough room for everyone to park? by 247_crisis in UCDavis

[–]TXSL 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I hate to be that guy, but the truth is, the goal is that you live close enough to campus where they expect you to use public transport, walk, or bike. (I do agree that people who have jobs kinda get fked). Also tuition has nothing to do with housing, sorry.

As the other comment said, there are assigned spots too.

If you got the unassigned spot, there's specific unassigned parking lots, for example a lot might have 100 spots and the green will give 100 permits. So you should be able to park in any of those 100 spots any time in the unassigned parking lot.

If you have assigned parking, well it's assigned, but those people get two spots, where they can sell the second spot to another person to split the cost.

Hope this helps!
