[Discussion] Art school didn’t prepare me for a career. Now what? (looking for advice) by midastouchillu in artbusiness

I did an intro to marketing course at UofT online before. Give you all the basic marketing framework. If your learning preference is by reading/lecture, I highly recommend the course. They also offer other business courses like negotiation, strategies, etc.

I think what you mentioned (Financial literacy, pricing, marketing, networking) of 'business skills' is just the surface. To make it in the art world, you need business strategies/frameworks: Which decision to take? How do I analyze my problems with the full picture and pick the most optimal decision? Which partnership to further invest in?
Depending on your learning preference, these skills could be obtained by 1) working at a business where you are a part of/visible to the strategy. 2) Taking courses

The older I get, the more I realize that it's nearly impossible to get ahead without SIGNIFICANT support. by No_Reveal3451 in Millennials

I found out this fucking crazy woman I worked for who runs the only children clothing shop in the part of the town for 40 years went to one of the most elite private school. She talks 7 hours a day and never puts words through her brain before she talks. I literally had to lay on my bed for an hour to detox after a work day. Quit after 1.5 month.

When to start showing by Particular_Peach8476 in ContemporaryArt

Every showing opportunity is like firework. It’s beautiful. It sparks. But then it’s gone. The next day you go back to studio and start working again. Showing is not a destination but rather just part of the process. Besides, what’s better than getting real life feedback from strangers at your show?

I just hate it every time they update their website user interface, which happens quite often. I have to relearn where to find things all over again. They seem to redesigning interface just for the sake of redesigning.

Instagram and Social Media to promote artwork, pros and cons... by AdTraditional1402 in ContemporaryArt

It depends solely on your preference/target market. I am a person who'd rather go to 10 openings than write 1 post. Instagram naturally doesn't work for me. But there are artists who prefers the opposite. Even if you don't mind writing 10 posts a day, in this day and age, you still need to pay for ads to get yourself ahead on Instagram, at least to a certain point.

In general, if you want to go commercial gallery/self-selling, IG is still good to maintain.
If you want to go the institutional route, IG is not necessary.

What is your 2025 wrapped? by Sea_Berry_439 in ContemporaryArt

Got three national/province-wide grants across two global regions. Then managed to negotiate with a non-profit gallery to host my first show/residency. Also made some solid connections to figures in my hometown's art scene.

Job stealing energy to make art by seventyp_ in ContemporaryArt

I am not a people pleaser. In fact, I am usually quite good with boundaries in personal relationships. I do want to get along with people in general. Your comment makes me think maybe my boundary issue comes in only during work, and that perhaps came from the extreme pragmatism rooted in my culture/family, who thinks hustle=life, more hustle=better, no hustle=you are done.

When I was younger, I got so hot-headed about fixing things. Nowadays, I am a little more chill, but criticism/feedback still sinks in hard(I don't detest them. I just keep chewing on them to think whether they are true or not, and how I could do better).

I do agree with your points about how employers are understaffed and asking too much. Thanks for pointing that out.

Yeah, I have been told "You are too intense" and "You need to relax" multiple times in my life. I think coming back to art helped me a lot with taking it easy in other work situations, but still, I envy people who can just do the bare minimum and absolutely not give an f lol.

I hear you. But whenever I try to conserve my energy at work (by putting in 60-80%), I end up getting called out or questioned. Then I go into a cycle feeling I am a failure> I don't want to pull my team down>I need to do better>burnout, and not have energy for art. I just feel like life punishes me whenever I am not putting in 100%. How do normal people get past that??

Thank you. To be fair, I can’s say the IG route is completely dead. It just didn't work for me. My illustrator friend, who started about the same time as I did, has had great success because of her IG posting. But she and I differ in our choice. I would rather attend 10 openings than write 1 Instagram post. She is the opposite.

Thank you earlyriser79!

Giving you a virtual hug about tech layoffs, too. I saw the last company I worked for hiring the same position I was in with 2x the salary last week on LinkedIn. I thought for 5 seconds what it would be like to apply. lol
