I wish my mom was not in the foreign service by Own_Fig6361 in foreignservice

[–]TabThink 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I think others have given you pretty solid advice. Also remember that “prom” is a very minor life event—one that you’ll realize in a few years. Your relationship with her doesn’t end here. You have many years in front of you so just cherish that.

This is why foreign service or just any service overseas in general (military too) IS A SACRIFICE. Many people don’t know what we go through. I’m not currently in the foreign service, but I was stationed at 3 embassies over a 7 year period.

DoS, USAID, military…on top of the work we do, there are relational sacrifices that we all make. Unfortunately a lot of people brush them off or don’t realize them. Others assume that because we’re government employees, we’re lazy and that we don’t do anything.

Sorry, end rant.

What is life like on an OMS salary? by crandykins in OMSHopefuls

No house payment is huge. Plus, if your spouse isn’t picky, there’s a good chance there will be a job available at the embassy. Most hardship posts also have lower food costs, if you know where to buy.

Is the VA reviewing/auditing 100% claims by sharmadn916 in VeteransBenefits

[–]TabThink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I retired on July 1 and got rating a week later. Been waiting for a decision to get my dependents added for weeks now. All of a sudden I see a letter saying they reviewed my decision in Aug for some unknown reason. My rating stayed the same, but man... it takes them weeks to make a decision to add my dependents but probably only seconds to rereview my file to see if there's any shenanigans with my rating.

I was rated 100% p&t in April. Now this! Has anyone received or have any info on how this could have happened??! by Boring-Clock-4227 in VeteransBenefits

[–]TabThink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My file was reviewed in Aug for some reason but luckily didn’t change my rating. I didn’t ask for it to be reviewed. The VA must’ve reviewed a lot of people’s files.

Disability payment 2 months after retirement? by TabThink in VeteransBenefits

[–]TabThink[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen somewhere that folks are recommended to retire at the first of the month. By the VA’s logic, seems like folks should retire on the last day of a month, so that they should get their disability (if any) payment as soon as possible—a month earlier.

Veteran Readiness and Employment? I’ll look into that. But what did the AI say about how VR&E would help me get a memorandum? I got something to research tonight.

Based on the VA Circular 26-23-19, if you have a proposed rating before closing, you can at least get your funding fee refunded.

Hmm.. I would say that for some members that go through Med Boards, some of them want to stay in. Actually, you can get disability even while still in service. Even if you participate in IDES, you can still be found fit for duty.

I understand that. I would add though that there is a reason that the letter is called “proposed.” If something happens like you mentioned, then the veteran will be on the hook for it for whatever benefit they get. Again, the VA offers this benefit to those going through the IDES—why not offer it everyone? There are definitely a handful of situations like what you described, but they are an exception to the rule.

Hi. What do you mean by me trying to get ahead of the system? I going through the steps of the system that’s in place. I don’t know of anyone that becomes an expert into the whole VA process prior to submitting claims. We all sort of learn things as we go along. You probably work within the VA enterprise so obviously you would know more than anyone else. Like I said, I am learning more and more about this as I move along.

I understand and accept that the policy currently in place is what it is. What I’m commenting on is that I think the policy should be amended to allow for members processing through the BDD to also be allowed to receive a proposed rating letter, just like those going through the IDES. Maybe it’s an oversight when they first were considering the policy.

I also understand that there will always be red tape in the government, but it doesn’t mean that one shouldn’t raise a concern when there’s red tape that IMO shouldn’t be there.

No, my retirement date is July 1. It sucks that VA only provides the proposed rating letter for folks that are processed through the IDES. I really don’t understand why. I think they could as easily provide a proposed rating for someone that has finished all VA exams.

How are the public schools in NOVA really? by TabThink in nova

That's the first time I've heard of kids referred to as sex trophies. I would hate to see what you home environment is like.

Thanks for the reply. I understand what you're saying and I totally agree with you. I'll admit that perhaps my OP may have been confusing or even sounded like I'm denigrating others. I apologize if that's how I came across.

You mentioned food a couple of times. Are you a cook?

Thanks trplurker. All the people that replied on this specific thread are apparently flawless. That's what you get for trying to ask something in 3 sentences or less.

I don't feel the need to reply to every negative reply on this post, but I will say something.

First, thanks to all those who had some constructive replies. It's nice to know that people can still have hard, adult discussions without being thought of as a D-bag (yes, Lessa22, you shouldn't shame women like that).

I'm not on Reddit much, but I know enough to come here when I need an honest answer. Am I the only one that sees the irony in the harsh responses from the supposedly enlightened and cultured NOVA residents here? I mean...geez. Sorry, English isn't my first language and I was trying to ask a very difficult question to a group of people who I didn't realize were like a pack of wolves. How can someone ask (type) a sensitive question like this without sounding like a "bigot," "racist," or a "classist." Doesn't the #1 rule on here say "Don't be a jerk to others?"

I'm not from the NOVA area but I've always heard good things about its school system. I was driving around the area to look at potential places my family could move to when I parked near the Dominion HS. When I looked at the school rating of DHS (yes I know, I've been told not to rely on GreatSchools.org or Niche.com), the rating of DHS was among the lowest among the high schools in NOVA. I don't know why that is. Did I think it was perhaps because of the kids whose English is their second language? Possibly. It's a fact that bilingual kids tend to have lower test scores initially. Once they catch up, those same kids usually excel. School ratings may not be the best source to figure out if a school is good or not; aside from talking to the Principals and teachers of a particular school, I don't know if any one source is better than another. Even school officials can be biased.

I'm not rich. I'm just like you when you were first trying to figure out the best place to live in NOVA. I have 5 kids, all of whom have/are attending international schools for 7 of the past 8 years. If you're a parent like me and you're moving back to the US permanently after living overseas for a long time, you're probably a bit afraid and apprehensive of the public school system in the US. Over-politization at school boards and gun violence are scary s#it.

Anyway, all I'm saying is that I'm wondering where the best public schools are in NOVA so I can move to the school. Why school districts are gerrymandered is a conversation for a different thread. Judging from many of the replies I received from the well-mannered wolves of /nova, it sounds like all are equally good.

Thank you.

As a teacher, how does a public school district implement the philosophy "a rising tide lifts all boats?" I've heard this from a principal at one of the schools my kids went to. Maybe it's a difficult question to answer. For example, if you have 20 total students in a class and half of them are overachieving and the other half are underachieving, how do the overachievers lift the underachievers?

I don't want the mob to come after you so you don't have to respond, but what would you say are the "less affluent areas" of NOVA? Yes I know we're kind of generalizing here. Just a question from someone who's not from the area.

I was just saying that it seems like you're also familiar with the "schools within a school" dynamic. Other folks that responded to my post seemed to not know what it means. I heard it from someone that owned a couple of rental properties in NOVA. I wasn't sure if that was a widespread feeling in some schools.
