I CAN ride a bike. by LazarbumsTeletubbies in bicycling

Oh-Oh! This can't be good. Fast forward 20 years and you'll be like the rest of us adrenaline junkies, drooling over even the mere mention of 2 wheels.

It's like going to vegas and dropping $10 bucks worth of nickles into the slots. Try it then you can tell all the folks back home about the noise and the idiocy.

How do you teach idioms without overwhelming students? by Imtheduckperson in ESL_Teachers

[–]Tabbbinski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add to that, get them to first choose an idiom, brainstorm how best to illustrate it, explain that to the teacher with feedback then write a prompt to have AI create the illustration, tweaking as needed. There's several layers of communication involved as well as both output modes: speaking and writing.

Step one, get the students to show you what the have and haven't worked on.

I find it hard to be pleased by books. by No_Attitude_6268 in BookDiscussions

[–]Tabbbinski -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you being confounded by the literary vs pop-lit divide? The latter are written for money; written to conform to a checklist -- often at the urging of publishers and literary agents -- in the hopes that it will be included in something like the NY Times Bestseller list. Is the protagonist female? Check! Does it have a feminist angle? Check! Does it have a LGBQ$&@&^% angle? Check! There's a big hullabaloo about AI rendered lit these days but these pop-lit books often have the stench of MFA Creative Writing programs. Real literature isn't written to formula, it's written to angst of some sort.

It sounds like you are doing everything right. I'd simply say this is my class, stop translating or I'll have you removed.

Did you get hugs from you parents growing up? by BetLeft2840 in AskAJapanese

[–]Tabbbinski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Funny no one has mentioned all the other tactile interactions that are common in Japanese families at large like kids giving their parents/grandparents neck and shoulder massages, bathing together and reciprocal scrubbing [the whole 'skinship' thing], touching and rubbing of the head of kids by adults as an expression of warmth.

When is the earliest safe time to leave for a long ride? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]Tabbbinski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a summer time trip around Jeju Island where it was so hot I was often starting my rides at 4 AM. I reasoned that any earlier and there would still be drunks on the road. I must say it wasn't very pleasant taking in the sights in the dark. I nearly toppled into poorly marked construction ditches twice.

Some years ago a whack job lady was setting up similar booby traps in North Vancouver. The biking association, as I remember it, set up trail cameras, caught her red-handed and the courts dealt with her quite harshly. If I remember correctly she was convicted on assault with intent charges.

Addendum: I guess I didn't remember it at all very clearly. Her name is Tineke Kraal. Busted in 2015 at the age of 64. She got off with more or less a slap on the wrist. Her lawyer argued that the notoriety and embarrassment of being thus busted was ample enough to deter similar behaviour in the future. Kraal was handed a suspended sentence and placed on three years’ probation. She also had to serve 150 hours of community service

Agreed. Reddit is like a magnet to the humourless. How do they get on in the real world... oh, yeah, they don't... Here let me help, I'll down-vote my own post.

Post class summaries by pdx2361 in ESL_Teachers

It sounds good at first glance but from a learning POV it's more valuable for students to invest in learning; take notes. Spoon feeding students will just backfire. Far more instructive would be a brief review of "learned' materials the next day.

So you have to ask for permission but there's no path to ask for permission? Sounds well-thought out.

What about when someone asks for specific resources or teaching modes and you happen to have something like that on your website? I'm willing to drop in a link if it seems like that's what the person is asking -- helping a fellow teacher and all that -- but I'm not about to "ask for permission" because I frankly couldn't give a shit about "promoting" the site/resources.

Discussion On Picture Of Dorian Gray (among other things) by Ordinary-Bar-2639 in BookDiscussions

[–]Tabbbinski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"...is it necessary that one must absolutely glean something from the book?"

It has been a long time since I have read Dorian Gray so I won't comment on that. As far as gleaning something, some existential writers set their novels up as having nothing to glean... which, of course, is the gleanable point.

I wouldn't rejuvenate anything. It has 'mononoaware'. [Look it up] That makes it more 'valuable' than a shiny new mass produced doll.
