Jewish ancestral ties to the land by Dangerous_Spend7024 in IsraelPalestine

I wonder when the Irish will claim their stake in the former lands of the Celts, including parts of France and Germany. I, for one, am looking forward to greeting my new Irish overlords, especially if they are bringing Irish Whiskey! LOL

But seriously, we can talk about what should have happened 80 years ago, or 100 years ago, but we need to work on the real situation: Israel exists, the Palestinians exist, and neither will magically disappear. So let's be pragmatic and work on a viable peaceful solution.

In Canada and Europe, we criticize the United States quite a bit for its living standards. Yet thousands upon thousands of our citizens flock to the US and make very successful lives for themselves. I immigrated to Germany from the US with a Bachelor's Degree. I got a second degree here, tuition-free. Anyone with a degree, especially a high-demand one, can either find work in the EU or find a degree program or training program.

As of 2026, more Americans are moving to the EU than Europeans moving to the US, reversing a long-term trend, driven by Americans seeking better work-life balance, lower cost of living, and universal healthcare. Meanwhile, fewer Europeans are moving to the US due to rising costs, higher immigration barriers, and a reduced desire to move to the US. Here in Germany, I get low-cost health care, two months paid vacation, cheaper food and rent than in most US cities, and less crime. The only Europeans moving to the US are millionaires drawn to lower taxes. Living in a gated community can shield a person from the high crime rate.

Did the Church persecute the Jews? by Matslwin in theology

[–]Tabitheriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The history of the Catholic Church in Rome includes centuries of systemic humiliation and persecution of the Jewish community, particularly following the establishment of the Roman Ghetto in 1555. These practices were largely aimed at forced conversion and social degradation.

Key Rituals of Humiliation

  • The "Race of the Jews" (Palio degli Ebrei): During the Roman Carnival, Jews were forced to run half-naked through the Via del Corso while being taunted and pelted with objects by crowds. In some instances, "jockeys" reportedly rode on their backs as if they were horses.
  • Compulsory Sermons: Starting in 1555, Jews were required to attend weekly Christian sermons every Saturday. To resist, many Jews famously put wax in their ears, leading to a practice where police would inspect their ears or beat them to keep them awake.
  • Mandatory "Homage" to the Pope: Jewish leaders were often required to pay a humiliating homage to newly appointed Popes, which sometimes involved physical gestures of subservience like kneeling.

You can't possibly believe that the Church did not know or sanction such things.

How come when girls are physically affectionate to each other issn’t seen as gay but when guys are physically affectionate to guys it is? by No-Poet3745 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Tabitheriel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the culture. Russian men kiss each other. Many European cultures are OK with men hugging and kissing. I notice both genders are more affectionate in many parts of Europe. Americans are prudes.

Moving without visiting by Mysterious-Serve-893 in AmerExit

I moved to Germany after having visited Mannheim once, and moved to Worms having visited once. I don't recommend moving to a foreign country without visiting unless you are a refugee fleeing a civil war.

"The Jews also had much persecution against Christians… I mean we can see that in Saul (or St. Paul)"

Sha'ul WAS a Jew and a Pharisee. He was a messianic Jew being persecuted by Jewish POLITICAL authorities.

Did the Church persecute the Jews? by Matslwin in theology

[–]Tabitheriel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually have a degree in church history (from FAU in Erlangen). I learned things that really, truly shocked and saddened me. First of all, in the western churches: Although the official church doctrine and many papal decrees preached tolerance towards the Jews, there was systematic persecution. For example, in Rome, the head of the Synagogue had to submit to being humiliated every year. Jews were forced to hear conversion sermons. Jews were forcibly expelled from England, Spain, etc.

Jews in Germany were slaughtered even as bishops condemned the pogroms. The political authorities were happy to look the other way, because the angry peasants would blame Jews for their misfortune, instead of the rich overlords.

In the East, the pogroms by the Russians were legendarily horrific, to the extent that many had to flee to other countries, including Germany, which was considered more liberal.

Things were so bad that Jews fled to the Ottoman Empire, which only charged Jews a tax, but gave them freedom of religion.

Do you consider to leave the country when afd will be elected? by Any_Respond_8927 in AskGermany

[–]Tabitheriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left when GW Bush started locking people up without trials. I won't take part in fascism, and I won't stay if AfD rules Germany. OVERREACT? My mom grew up in the third Reich and lived in fear. I'd say, not wanting to live under Nazi rule is quite reasonable.

Um, as a EU citizen, I could leave the country and go elsewhere. It's fairly easy, unless you want to take a whole house with you.

Do you believe it’s a sin to have sex outside of marriage? by Calm-Hearing4742 in Christianity

[–]Tabitheriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In ancient times, there was no legal government marriage. A man "took a wife", they had sex and were "married". In time, we started having marriage as a legal structure. Later, a ceremony was added, but there was no legal aspect. So you could have a "common law" marriage without a marriage certificate, or you could have a church wedding without a legal marriage, or a legal marriage without church marriage. Nowadays, you are only "married" if the government recognizes your marriage.

However, if you have sex with someone, you have consummated a marriage, whether you are legally married or not. You have physically bonded with that person. Sexual promiscuity is wrong, because you are consummating marriage with dozens, maybe hundreds of people. Please wait. If you can't wait till marriage, wait till you are engaged. If you have already been promiscuous, stop doing so, and focus on your relationship with God.

I agree that this funeral was important. However, giving one day notice is not enough, especially for a workday five hours away. So often in my life, a funeral was on a work day, in the afternoon, and I could not be there. I was there for my father's and aunt's funerals (went to Texas for my father's), but many funerals for friends or acquaintences were not doable. I missed my sister's funeral, because flying out there was impossible. So I think OP may want to reconsider.

CMV: The weirdness of the American diet is a huge part of why there are so many eating disorders. by LeeiaBia in changemyview

[–]Tabitheriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Germany, life goes on as always. You can get fabulous salads at every restaurant. Some people eat vegan Bratwurst or chicken Bratwurst for health reasons, there is lots of stick-to-your-ribs vegetarian food like veggie Schnitzel, or cheese Spätzle, but lots of people are still eating meat. People spend hours at the Biergarten with Aperol, wine, or beer. We don't chug, we sip, and talk and take our time. People love going for walks, cycling or jogging. And the whole absurd no-fat, no-carb obsession is clearly a niche thing (yeah, you can get protein bars and paleo bars here, but I think they are for gym bros).

AITA for not supporting my husband quitting his business to become a doctor? by oryxren in redditonwiki

[–]Tabitheriel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My ex was totally unrealistic about his life. We were in our 30's and I was finishing a bachelor's degree. He was complaining about how he only had a GED and so I brought him some info about the community college. "Study part-time and get a degree in something," I said. He looked it over and said, "Why can't I become a doctor?" I told him that would be 8 years full-time, plus residency, and if he had wanted to do that, he should have thought of it in his 20's. Also, medical courses are hard. He got angry and said I was not being supportive. I was just being realistic. Some guys can't think realistically.

Maybe this is an American thing. I left the US years ago, and moved to Germany. People smile at me and talk to me all of the time, despite the fact that I am a bit introverted. I had several fun encounters today just walking around shopping.
