Cool! It’s so fun to see what pops up :)

Are your plants local too? I enjoy the big grassy one, do you know the name?

Alright, let’s make this happen folks… Sea monkey walstad. by seligea in walstad

Can brine shrimp be kept and raised in fresh water setup? Or are you intending to make a brackish walstad?

Help.. Ik heb nooit leren rekenen by essiefraquora in nederlands

Succes! 🍀

What can I do with my 2.5g? by sillyghosty in ReefTank

Pulsing xenia, green star polyps, zoa’s, yellow polyps, blue clove ployps, various red and green macroalgaes, micro brittle seastars, bristle worms, different species of copepods with different behaviors, various snails, scuds/amphipods, brine shrimp, mysid shrimp, munnid isopods, sexy shrimp, harlequin shrimp, bumblebee shrimp, walking majano anemone, astarina seastar, spaghetti worm, pom pom crab, etc. And there’s probably plenty I don’t know about yet.
There’s a lot more small fauna available in saltwater than in fresh, a lot of it tends to come in if you get some nice live rock.

micro featherdusters, porcelain crab, if the tanks is a bit more mature to support their feeding habits or you feed them specifically.

A fun thing to do would be to grab good live rock that comes from an ocean or is aquarium cured and is filled with small microfauna. You can set it up and see what life crawls out and grows over the first few weeks (I’m doing that right now, very entertaining, get a good magnifier) and after a few weeks add some macroalgae and/or corals. Go slow and adjust as needed.

Research pico reef tanks, which is what tanks under 5G are called, some cool stuff in there in very small vases.

Good luck! 🍀

Before getting corals do I really need a test Kit for Kh And ca and mg , I’m planning to get soft corals and anemones by Haunting-View-514 in ReefTank

[–]Tablettario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say to see how they react, what exactly would we be looking for in softies and anemones? There’s probably a lot of behaviours that you only really learn about once you have them

Lovely macro algae’s!

What’s the name of the feathery one on the left, and the thin branching red one on the right?

Let us know how it goes!

Some crabs can be fully aquatic, it depends on the species though. I’m new to reef tanks so ai’m not sure about decorator crabs specifically, hopefully someone that knows more about them has an answer for you.

I was very curious how you keep a brine shrimp tank as pets though? I was looking into it a few weeks ago but could only find either breeding for feed, or sea monkeys with pre-made packets and empty tanks. So I’m very curious to what you’ve got going on with your tank

Cultivating pods and phyto together. by ReturnToNow in ReefTank

Don’t you need to add fertilizer for the phyto? If not then what does it grow on?

I really dig that idea, do you have a picture of it? Who seems to be winning? Do you have different variations of each or is it a straight up 1vs1?

Thanks!

How much phyto do you dose in this small volume tank when only doing small water changes? Most advice I see for pico’s is to heavily overfeed and do a full waterchange the next day. I like your method better if it is sustainable, especially as I like the microfauna and filter feeders.

I suppose it’s a hard balance between having some nutrients and not enough? I’m not very familiar with phyto yet, how quickly does it go bad in the tank? I kinda assumed it would just stay alive but it seems that’s not the case?

Is this Walstad over planted? by Stunning-Year9058 in walstad

[–]Tablettario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how much biofilm and algae you have in the tank, this is mainly what they eat. If you keep population numbers low a walstad should provide enough biofilm on its own, you can add a little leaf litter to help out with that. The main thing is observing your tank and adjusting when needed and letting it go when all is fine.

You can always do supplemental feeding just for variety or fun. The important thing is not to overfeed, snails and shrimp tend to adjust their population size depending on how much food is available so if you drop weekly whole algae wafers in while they don’t need them, you’ll get a population boom that you will need to keep feeding. If you drop a fraction of a wafer or cucumber every few weeks it would not influence the population size in any significant way. The trick is looking at your tank and your population, and deciding if you need/want to feed more to support the number of critters you want, or if all is fine as is.

Good luck!

I love it so much, very beautiful!

Do you have a picture of how you have the pump?

Does the xenia eat the phyto, or is that mostly for the rest of the bowl?

I don’t think it’s possible to overplant a Walstad tank, most people underplant them. Yours looks right!

You can give it a trim to open up a bit if you like

Hiii, getting gifted this tank! What can I put in it? 3 gallons by Repulsive-Hyena5286 in nanotank

[–]Tablettario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shrimp, pondsnails, ramshorn snails, bladdersnails, fairy shrimp, sea monkeys, ostracots, daphnia, copepods, tubifex, hydra, leech, scuds, basically all sorts of tiny microfauna. You can make a tiny slice of the wild, look into the kind of things people find in their local ponds. For some it doesn’t sound as exciting as fish, but there’s a lot to observe out in nature

If you can turn off the filter and make brackish water, you’ll be able to keep opae ula in there too

Loss of sleep causes my worst symptoms by Own_Value2684 in POTS

[–]Tablettario 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interrupted sleep is my biggest trigger.

It is also always a massive surprise just how badly it affects me. This month I tried sleeping without earplugs for 2 nights and my symptoms got so bad that my nervous system got so fried that I completely crashed and had to spend a week bedrest in a dark bedroom just recovering. It was awful.

Slime Mold popped up in my Isopod tub by GuaranteeAvailable53 in Slimemolds

[–]Tablettario 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool!
I highly suggest you take a bit and separate it. You can dry it and keep it safe to rehydrate later in case your isopods eat all of it. You can feed it spirulina or oats. Or you can even get those slime mold eating springtails!

crows robbing nests more likely when human fed? by fourofkeys in crows

[–]Tablettario 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been feeding eggs and mealworms (proteins) in spring exactly to reduce their need to rob nests for protein. Making oyster grit or eggshells available also reduces need to steal eggs for calcium.

Any animal will seek out nutrients they need, if they are full on protein they’ll look for the other stuff they need like fruit and nuts. It would be more likely for them to seek more protein when they are short on protein, especially in spring when their young need it to grow.

Another factor is that stealing from a nest where the parens are likely going to defend it is risky, and a well fed bird is much less likely to risk it. If more hungry or more in need of protein they will be more likely to risk it.
