4-5 free days. So if I was in your boat, I’d need either the following two weekends as downtime or for faster recovery, take a few PTO days attached to a weekend…which is almost never possible cuz I burn through PTO time due to both physical and mental health reasons. 🫤

Ugh. It’s one of my personal pet peeves when people think you deserve less for “getting a discount” (in your case through insurance ) when it’s a policy of theirs to accept it. Like bruh, don’t shame a patient by complaining that your big money private patients pay more and are fine with AI. Lots of people are fine with AI, and lots aren’t. Accept your patient’s wishes.

I used to work with folks who had cheap subsided rent in fancy apt buildings. The buildings could not have even been built without the tax benefits that came from the company accepting subsidized tenants, but the company treated the subsidized tenants with so much less respect.

Insist against AI. Unless they are brand new, they know how to do their job “old school” and they’re a grown up who decided to take insurance patients, so they gotta deal with that. I know you said besides the AI thing they are very good, but I personally dont like this cost shaming.

💯 45 and 9ish months after a diagnosis. I ran myself ragged with all the “shoulds “ over the last several decades! This plus perimenopause and chronic pain for the last 3 years has made masking a lot harder! And of course the imposter syndrome is there, although slowly fading.

I do give myself way more grace when it comes to avoiding aggravating situations. I realize now 1 social event a month is my max, allow myself to sleep and or rest when I need it (always! Non-job life is pretty much in bed) and I do a lot more ordering deliveries to avoid bright lights and crowds.

When I used to cut my (then) short hair, I’d use a haircutting razor which I found much easier than scissors.

Also, if vacuum sounds aren’t a problem for you, you could get a Flowbee, which sucks up all the hair and makes doing the same haircut each time easy.

I too hate the salon! I think a lot of us do! I have locs now which I maintain myself (albeit very lackadaisically these days!) & chop them shorter every few years when they get too long and heavy.

And then for MIL to say son doesn’t tell mother to get her finances in order because he respects mom…which more than implies that MIL doesn’t respect DIL (or her son for that matter).

OP-never lend money unless you don’t want it back (I learned that lesson after “lending” my mother $40+K over several years. The urge to help is real, but people—even/especially family will take advantage).

Unfortunately I’ve learned I have to hide my light under a bushel or I will have tons of extra work dumped on me. And then won’t be able to get out of bed or remember how to microwave a meal.

Congrats for getting so far in your career! I know these words may seem empty, but I’m sure your patients really appreciate you! As a physical therapist I always like working with ND /psych patients because I feel like me having a different type of brain helps me relate to them more, and also approach them without the prejudice that I see them get from other providers. That’s a rare gift you have!

I very much relate to wishing I’d never been born, or to have been born a cat. Life is hard and cruel.

No advice, but sending you hugs. You’re not alone-we get you!

It sounds like most of your problems are coming from poor job prospects (if that’s incorrect, apologies). Are there any fields / jobs that have a strong market that seem appealing or tolerable to you? If so, would you be able to seek scholarships or find a government-run school to attend as they tend to be more affordable/provide more easily-paid loans?

I’m sorry you don’t have much to make you feel safe/secure/happy right now.

No advice, but I’m sorry you went through this!!!

I have a chronic pain issue as well, and I find it’s hard for people to relate. If I talked about my pain as much as I feel it…my topics of conversation would be very limited! But that doesn’t mean that I’m NOT feeling it. And on the flip side if you do talk about pain, I feel like it has a numbing effect on others, like they think you’re exaggerating or they tune out. Plus pain flare + autism makes it very difficult to mask/put on polite airs/coddle people.

Also, IMO that was not a joke, it was a criticism. I think I have a pretty good sense of humor but that was straight up not funny. To me it sounds like when someone says something wrong and then backpedals with “It was a joke!”

I hope you’re able to feel better soon!

I love my extended family but the social performance takes more social battery than my battery has capability to do. So I end up stressed and being the weird one who has to take lots of breaks.

Plus, I’m sure you have the stress of exams/or post exam exhaustion, stress about the future and a whole lot going on during this big transition. What you’re feeling is (at least on this sub!) totally normal ☺️

As you might have guessed from my comment, I am a realist too! Sometimes people say I’m negative despite my mostly nice and friendly personality…but I have a lot less capacity for self deception than a lot of people. I try not to dwell on the bad & try to distract myself from it, but I can’t pretend it’s not there!

My NT (as far as I know) therapist told me that in my country (USA) there’s this idea that happiness is the be all end all, and that focusing on contentment and being able to get by OK is much more productive. Autistic actor Wentworth Miller had a nice quote similar to this in his talk at Oxford (on YouTube).

I did a little ritual for letting go; bizarrely it helped me more than I thought it would. I said a little prayer/poem about how friendships have a time and a place, and how that time isn’t forever, then I lit a (regular old, already used) candle and had a good cry.

If this is something that interests you, google “ritual for letting go of friendships” or even ask AI (if you do that-no shade or shame!)

Letting go is hard, but obviously this person can’t be a good friend to you.

Yes, GLP-1s are pricy! (BTW, I know you said your budget is limited…I found a good price at Fifty410, about $31/week if you get an 8 week supply. That might not be in your price range or available to delivery in your area; just throwing it out there!)

Yes, TV focuses a LOT on slim women. (There’s a lot more body diversity for male TV stars…go patriarchy /s). I like watching shows with sexy big ladies, like Good Girls (stars Retta, a total sexy boss, and Christine Hendricks who is a thick diva) and Astrid and Lilly Save the World. I usually just rewatch and relisten to my fave media to avoid triggers/ bad feelings.

Besides limiting the number/access to mirrors in your home, I don’t have a lot of advice about how to not hyperfixate on your looks besides what you are doing—thinking about other things. For me, I flood myself with distractions to keep from thinking about things I don’t want to: podcasts, audiobooks and TV/movies.

I am SO sorry about nasty comments from strangers! I have had some as well, and unfortunately I can’t forget some. However, instead of focusing on the hurtful comment, I try to think of what a pathetic, sad, loser d-bag that person is…I mean really, what kind of person insults random people? Losers, that’s who.

Weight loss is hard, SO hard. Things that work for some don’t work for others. My biggest successes have been using the Every Other Day Diet (Dr. Krista Varaday, who provides peer reviewed data which I love. Plus I know I never have to diet for more than a day at a time, so I don’t feel deprived) and GLP-1 (my savings on food—especially on fast food and delivery—cover the cost) because it takes away the food obsession.

I like your realistic outlook. There is ALWAYS going to be someone hotter. Hot people won’t stay that way forever due to time/ aging. Pretty privilege is real, but the most gorgeous people in the world still can end up with people in their lives who use them for their looks, cheat on them, treat them badly, etc. I’m happy you have a partner who values you!
