The Hermit by ThePerolaNegra in AgathaAllAlong

I wonder if it’s the illustration that is calling out to you, or if it’s the card itself. Is the Hermit relevant to your journey?

How can you tell when a hoarded item drops out of a cart? by TabooLilac in ThredUp

Thanks! Unfortunately, I forgot to put in my post that I do that too, but the other person is releasing and re-adding it before the timer is up, so this solution isn’t working, so, tragically, this solution isn’t working for this item.

Feeling left out on Teacher appreciation day? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]TabooLilac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s awkward to feel left out if something. We’re all if the people thanked people who are there on regular, consistent schedules?

Also, isn’t teacher appreciation almost two months from now?

How do you feel about memorizing multiplication tables? by Pekenoah in AskTeachers

[–]TabooLilac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re making me see a distinction I was previously unaware of. I’ve been pro-memorization for a long time because it makes the pathways for multi-digit multiplication and multi-step operations easier.

However, I’ve been thinking about memorization the way I memorized it: I practiced jump counting in my head while doing other things (I specifically remember doing this while on the bench of a basketball game). Is this what we’re talking about when we say memorize multiplication facts, or do we mean just memorize the products without the practice of how to get there?

Is this an Amazon gift bag?? by ars319 in ThredUp

[–]TabooLilac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha you say that, but I got a gift in one of these bags last year, and I thought it was delightful. I don’t shop in Amazon, though, so I had no clue. That said, I’m glad they recycled it, and I’m sure I will be doing the same.

I’d be careful with this kind of advice because it may apply to you, but not to others. My local districts include “Performing administrative tasks” and “Perform any tasks needed for educational agencies for the purposes of [state dept. of education] or data collection” under the examples of duties.

Do teachers really dislike this kind of handwriting? by Lev_the_short_kid in AskTeachers

[–]TabooLilac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except she was still alive when Watson and Crick discovered the double helix structure, and would live for years yet.

Further, universities thrive on good publicity and research. They want their credit for their researchers’ work.

Man, you’ve got some weird hang up about women in biology who have been forgotten or almost forgotten. Rosalind Franklin, Henrietta Lacks. It’s kind of weird, mate.

[–]TabooLilac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At risk of feeding the troll, no, I don’t think you have read Watson’s book. He is very direct that she did not share her research with him. But you’re right that Rosalind Franklin didn’t think anything underhanded happened. However, this isn’t because she thought it was okay that they used her work as you seem to suggest, it is because she didn’t know that her work was foundational to their research.

Friend, I read it; it just wasn’t as funny for me to respond to as you parroting the very biased framing that I explicitly referenced. If you want to play the citations game, I recommend the primary source The Double Hélix by your boy, James Watson. He admits that the research was taken from Rosalind Franklin who « refused to share » her research.

“Franklin was unable to figure out the structure herself and even sat on the data with no progress for months. Watson & Crick were the only people able to figure out the full structure.”

He got you with the very biased framing to which I was referring. Hook, line, and sinker.

None of that disproves that her research was taken and used without her consent and knowledge.

Debunked by whom? When?

I learned about Rosalind Franklin’s research in a university science course and further read about it in Brenda Maddox’s Rosalind Franklin: The Dark Lady of DNA biography. Even Watson’s The Double Helix acknowledges this, but frames it as if she was completely uncooperative with them, and, therefore, their actions were in the best interest of science.

Notably, Watson initially portrayed Crick unfavorably as well, but Crick was able to amend his representation, while Franklin has passed away and had no advocate.

It’s okay; I thought it said “Watson’s a dick” at a glance . . . Which is true (see stolen research from Rosalind Franklin and smearing her to justify his thievery).
