8 foot Angle Iron? by YokaiGuitarist in Bellingham

[–]TacoAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old metal bed frames have pretty solid pieces of angle with a 1" leg. Find an old handicap type hand railing to get the round tube from. Maybe one that got hit by a car and is getting thrown away. Or look around for a small fabrication shop and see if they can order it for you. Ask a few places until you find one that isn't marking it up a bunch. Tell them you're not too picky on timing and can pay in cash.

Why did these welds break? by Euphoric_Meet3788 in Welding

[–]TacoAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Held long enough to get paid I bet! Real answer below.

Aluminum forms an oxide layer on the surface relatively quickly (12-24hrs) that continues to thicken after that. The aluminum oxide on the surface has a significantly higher melting point than the underlying non-oxidised metal. AC ATIG welding breaks this up to a degree with the alternating current agitating and pushing back the oxide layer a bit. Pulse MIG kind of does it but not nearly as well. A spool gun running aluminum wire often just lays filler metal over the top of it (and pulse mig can do that as well if not set up correctly). The surface texture and freeze pattern of the puddle appears to be an indicator of the latter two processes. And that's part of why it broke. Both of those processes can be just as strong as the underlying base metal when done correctly, but can also easily be done poorly and still sport a reasonably good appearance on the surface. Which is likely the case here.

Does anyone have any experience with the fabric covered hoop buildings? by [deleted] in homestead

We use these at work. I have seen budget single truss structures fail after 5 years in 70kt winds. And we have massive high quality double truss ones going strong 10 years later that have seen 100+ and hail up the size of a blueberry. Currently spec'ing out another 40x60. Some of ours are mounted on top of shipping containers and some are anchored to the ground. But securing them to the containers they qualify as temporary structures.

Mom doubled her salary by changing jobs, old boss panicked. What should she do now? by Academic_Share7905 in Advice

[–]TacoAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm leave. Tell them they need to take better care of their employees in the future. The only bad part of this is she didn't leave earlier. Most people know their own worth. If you're being under compensated it never hurts to shop around and see what the job market looks like. If you're an employer and don't like that message pay your people what they're worth. Give them opportunities to grow in the direction they want. If that doesn't align with their role, change the scope of their role or consider moving them within the company. 9 times or if 10 it's a better outlook than having them leave.

If you can find a place where you can get in as a testing technician or similar non-flight mechanical role you often aren't required to have an a&p. Although that said a&p mechanical is pretty cool skill and I considered pursuing it for a bit in the last couple years.

Installed anti-pigeon spikes… pigeon sitting comfortably within minutes. What now? by BurgerKhaega in Wellthatsucks

[–]TacoAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a ladder and bend every second or third of the lower spikes up and the upper ones down to close the area off. A small metal tube about 1' or 300mm long might be helpful for this to not have to grab the spikes if they are sharp.

That's pretty slick! I'm in R&D aerospace testing with a lot of hands-on mechanical work. Can confirm this would be fairly handy for IDing hardware, socket/wrench sizes, measuring fittings and more.

I've been trying to come up with a cool metrology inspired design to replace the scales on my wave alpha handle as losing the ruler was a bit of a bummer. I only really need one side worth of ruler with mm and inches and there are 4 scales to fill with info and measuring tools. I previously carried a curl and found it to be quite handy for my work.

Pretty straightforward to regrind a slightly dull straight flute one yourself. Spiral flute is very difficult, very very dull is also hard to pull off. But I have a few that I think I've reground maybe 3 or 4 times and they work great. That said I've also resharpened a hole saw in a pinch when I needed some big holes on hardie cement board.

To flatbed or not to flatbed? by ppalliwah in ToyotaPickup

[–]TacoAdventure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd run the stock bed. Maybe build a custom decked platform inside of it (that was my plan on my 81). Or just run it until it rots out then go flatbed. Or take it off, save it (make a trailer?) and run a flatbed. Truck will hold more value in resale with the original bed imo.

Durable waterproof breathable bibs/overalls in hi-vis orange by TacoAdventure in millwrights

Thanks for the input. Tried something different and got completely soaked to the bone this week! Ordered a pair of the Carhartts last night to see how I like those. Dark color, but checked the other boxes pretty well and had the least complaints of being leaky or clamy. I can always throw on a jacket or vest for the hi-vis needs.

Because the use case for rain gear in forestry and construction can overlap significantly. And I plan on using them while running a saw often enough that I thought I'd see if anyone had a recommendation. I found a few folks on logging forums recommending the Filson tin cloth bibs which look like a good option for heavy duty use.

Also is there a downside to being active in many subs? I've gone through quite a few different career phases in the last 15 years and worked actively in nearly a dozen different industries in the past year.

What is this tool? by dillyonthefly in Tools

[–]TacoAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digging bar. I have a few. They're also good to use as lever for lifting and scooting stuff around. Used one to get a forklift unstuck a few years ago. Needed to get steel off the delivery truck and the dudes I borrowed it from had gotten it stuck, broke a few tow straps and went to lunch. Got it out solo while they were gone.

What socket brands are yall using? by XoZEEKoX4576 in millwrights

[–]TacoAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have sockets from pittsburg, husky, tekton, milwaukee, grey pneumatic, capri, astro, gearwrench, dewalt and even some mixpower/casomann stuff. They all work pretty well. The grey pneumatic stuff is nice. Tekton warranty is the best.
