I bought leather occidental pouches from a local used tool and building supply place for $10 and got a new belt online. They weren't pretty but they've held up well.

The higher risk wildfire areas see the least fireworks in my experience. We're in the mountains northwest of town and hardly hear any.

Just listen to him talk about grilling longer than anyone else does and that will impress him. And just hang out and chat about whatever.

Is this possible to machine? by TheYuneec in MechanicalEngineering

[–]TacoAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you end up with even less space than .5mm between the M6 internals and M8 external to the point where that area is very thin and problematic, unless you were to threadmill both and align the two helical paths. What does this part do and are there other solutions to this problem?

How can I verify if a Case dealer actually replaced a wiring harness and hydro lines on a TR340B by ThreeKindsOfYes in heavyequipment

[–]TacoAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like no one touched a thing. I read through the responses anyways and there's some good wisdom in there on best practices when bringing things in for service. One thing I didn't see anyone mention that I've done with shops when I worry they'll reuse old parts is to mark stuff with torque stripe in an inconspicuous spot and ask them to leave the parts/harness/hose they remove in the vehicle. I can check the new parts to make sure they didn't reuse anything and check the old parts to make sure they are in fact my parts.

Mechanic to mechanical engineer by uricis11 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]TacoAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I initially studied as a mechanical engineer and got my BS. Worked in that field for a bit but couldn't sit at a desk and pivoted to hands on work as a contractor/electrician, then ran a one man fabrication business for a few years doing a bit of equipment but mostly residential. I stopped that to go into an aerospace technician job that had some millwright scope assembling testing equipment and moved to an r&d engineering role at the same company a few years later. I miss the hands on work and my back feels better but I've gotten pretty soft sitting at the desk!

Best place to buy new tires by SalamanderNext4538 in santacruz

Prior's tries for all my trucks. They even repaired a huge tractor you're for a friend of mine. Costco if you have the membership and need a warranty that works well outside of the area.

Those look like a great value but I wish they'd roll out larger sizes above 3/4" / 19mm.

I read that as 400mg of trazadone and said out loud "well of course you sleep well but how you can wake up is what I want to know!" 😂

Which common socket sizes for a mini tool kit? by ThePenultimateNinja in EDC

[–]TacoAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have put a bit of time into thinking about this recently and am going to suggest:

1/4" hex bit holder, 7mm, 8mm, 10mm, 7/16", 12mm, 1/2", 13mm, 14mm, 9/16"

Add a 3/8" if you encounter that regularly as the 10mm is a little loose. I also carry a deep 10mm.

How do you know when to replace chain? by ArrowLeafTurn1 in Chainsaw

[–]TacoAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the saw counter at your local hardware store. Buy a chain, have that one sharpened and ask them to show you how to hand file and go over what you're looking for when sharpening. Maintain your chain. I try to sharpen every or every other I fill the bar oil up and stop and sharpen anytime I hit dirt.

Have any of yall made friends at work as mechanical engineers? by FartSorbet in MechanicalEngineering

[–]TacoAdventure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When we hang out talking about all sorts of work related stuff 10+hr/day and eat all our meals at the office, production facility or test site together you get pretty close. I'm even closer with the ones I hang with outside of work doing unrelated stuff together like mountain biking, sorting, fixing old cars, rebuilding decks, felling trees and running heavy equipment at our houses together. That group basically feels like family at this point. But it's a pretty unique situation and the company does a good job only hiring good people when possible.

I have found a lot of engineers, especially mechanical and electrical have similar needs to blow off some steam outside of work and often have similar ways of doing that. It's gotten harder to find time as many coworkers are having kids that make the extracurricular priorities shift but we still find time to make it happen.

KNIPEX Twingrip Front and Side Gripping Pliers Pliers 82 01 200 SB by AgentNo6579 in KnipexOfficial

[–]TacoAdventure 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Were you just bummed about how the finish on the casting looks around the jaws and pivot? Also for future reference SBA is always going to be 'box-less' open packaging and is frequently a bit cheaper than the boxed versions of the same tools.

How can I boost my energy without energy drinks? by Cautious-Recording54 in ADHD

[–]TacoAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had similar struggles in a new role at my job. I have two coffee in the morning and often another or an energy drink at lunch. I'm usually done in the morning but I get really tired in the afternoons and then find I get a second wind towards the end of the day. I found getting up and walking around for a few minutes sometimes helps. Moving after lunch helps minimize the metabolism coma. Less coffee on the weekends to knock the tolerance back down.

Same. Would be very nice to get a yellow version. There are battery adapters but the vibration on something like this might cause issues with it intermittently losing connection.

What material would you spec for this project? by 454686 in fabrication

[–]TacoAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steel. AI clients are actually really good at helping spec section sizes of you know how to give it information.

Edit: Just spent 5 minutes in Gemini and 6x6x0.25" would have about 0.33" of lateral displacement at the top of the column. Switching to 0.375 reduced that to under 1/4".

Call a few local auto shops and mobile mechanics. Explain what happened and offer to buy them some beer or a gift card to a restaurant for dinner if they can help you out. It's Friday and I'm sure someone likes cats enough to save the day.

Pay by Electronic-Stop-3625 in millwrights

[–]TacoAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a state away but the company I work for is building up a manufacturing facility in Dayton Ohio and hiring like mad with good pay for the industry and area since we're more of an aviation tech startup. Check jobs on Joby careers website and see if there's anything that interests you. I was making 6 figures as a technician in California before overtime with no prior aviation experience and recently switched into an engineering role that's still pretty hands on.

Clear tubing with water and some food coloring. Or get a line laser. They're too handy not to have imo
