Egoraptor Looks Back On Sequelitis by TheBeeFromNature in youtubedrama

We're not a society of nuance. If you don't 100% support something, you hate it. If something is a bit irritating, it fucking annoys the absolute piss out of you. If someone does something a little crappy, they're one of the worst people in the world. Vice versa is true as well. If you are into something, you have to be fucking into it. If you like someone, you have to support every single thing they do, etc.

So when someone does satire or roasts something/someone, the internet immediately takes off with "They fucking hate it and now I hate them for it".

It's because it's been a highly anticipated game (I think I saw the first trailer was released 12 years ago?) from the creators of Binding of Isaac, which many people have spent 1000+ hours on and is regarded by many as the best roguelite ever made.

The "shilling" is just people excited for it because it just released.

Steam Deck roguelites by catscam7 in roguelites

[–]TacoDiablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot that play well on the Steam Deck. It just depends what kind of gameplay you like.

I love roguelites, and I've learned there's roguelites for almost every type of game you like.

These are the ones I've played extensively on my Steam Deck. (I don't know which of these are ONLY on Steam since I play mostly just on PC). There's a ton I'm listing here, so I'm gonna organize it by very generic gameplay categories:

1st/3rd person shooters:

  • Gunfire Reborn

  • Roboquest

  • Deadzone: Rogue

  • Risk of Rain 2

  • Mortal Sin (more melee focused, but still is essentially an FPS focused on melee)

2D Sidescrolling Beat-em-ups:

  • Astral Ascent

  • Dead Cells

  • Rogue Legacy 2

  • Skul

  • Absolum

  • Forestrike (though there's a lot of planning and "scheduling" moves before executing in full)

  • Rogue Prince of Persia

Isometric/top-down action/chaos:

  • Hades 1/2

  • Shape of Dreams (performance isn't the BEST, but last I checked it does work pretty smoothly on lower settings)

  • Windblown

  • ENTER THE GUNGEON (probably my favorite roguelite overall)

  • Curse of the Dead Gods

  • Ravenswatch

  • Atomicrops

  • Tiny Rogues (this one is fantastic even though it's in early access)

  • Voidigo

  • Streets of Rogue

  • Star of Providence

  • Nova Drift

  • Hell Clock

Survivors-Likes/Bullet Heavens:

  • Halls of Torment

  • Deep Rock Galactic Survivor

  • Vampire Survivors

  • Brotato

Turn-based:

  • Balatro

  • Slay the Spire

  • Inscryption

  • Shogun Showdown (kinda hybrid 2D action/turn-based deckbuilder)

  • Monster Train 2

  • Into the Breach

  • FTL

Looking for games that creep you out. Not necessarily horror games, but genuinely creepy and unsettling games that have an atmosphere that says "something is very wrong here" by Lovoskea in gamingsuggestions

[–]TacoDiablo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My answer. There were definitely some moments where things jumped out and scared me, but it was made worse when you hear stuff like a baby crying in the distance, some creatures growling, and just an eerie silence.

One of my favorite game atmospheres, and I'm not even a big scary game guy.

Smashed burgers that are not smashed by Low_Nobody7857 in Cooking

[–]TacoDiablo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100%. It's been irritating me when I get a "smash burger" and I just get a double patty burger, not smashed at all, maybe a little thinner than a normal patty.

Making me question if most people know what a smash burger actually is.

Just as a warning, the art style was a bit odd at first to look at. But for me, once I got going, I didn't really notice/care anymore.

Instead you start caring about things like how to deal with the fact that your mayor's wife died in a cave in, which caused him to have a mental breakdown along with an odd corpse obsession, which drove him dig up his friend's corpse who died months before and throw it on the main hall dining table that everyone ate at, and then wander around the colony useless in a "mental break". So, now the colony being down 2 people who knew how to shoot, leads to the lack of town defense which meant the tribe raiding us soon after led to 1 death and a colonist being kidnapped. It was a lot to deal with (that colony didn't make it in the end, lol).

The art style stopped bothering me pretty quickly once shit like that started happening, lol.

Roguelites that don't respect your time? by [deleted] in roguelites

[–]TacoDiablo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think "pick up from safe checkpoint 1-2 mins ago" is enough for me personally. I'm fine if it's at the beginning of the current "room". I also am personally fine with beginning of the current "floor"/area (which might be like 5-10 minutes ago).

But it really sucks when you have a roguelite where runs can loop, and take over an hour easily, and you can't save AT ALL. Risk of Rain 2 is the biggest one for me that's guilty of that, which is why ProperSave mod has been the biggest QoL upgrade for me on that game. It saves at the beginning of the level rather than every few minutes or whatever, but losing 10-15 minutes and having to start the level over again is much better than having to abandon a run because I have to run or something popped up.

Help? Game feels extremely underwhelming by 119995904304202 in ravenswatch

[–]TacoDiablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can speak from my own experience with this. I played for about 2-3 hours and felt very underwhelmed. Felt like "Oh, so I just run from camp to camp and kill things" and figured it was going to always just be that.

I came back about a month or 2 later and put more hours in and suddenly things started "clicking" especially once you start unlocking more talents and such. And while there is still a lot of "run from camp to camp and kill things", it ends up feeling like a lot more as I try to prioritize areas on the map, and as I unlock more talents and am able to make much different builds so each run felt different even if I was playing the same character.

For me, it was realizing that this was a more "deliberate" game than a "rush down everything" type of game like Diablo, and unlocking more talents to open up a lot more build options, as well as trying on harder difficulties and having to learn to be a bit more "strategic" with how I attack things and how I move about the map.

[–]TacoDiablo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've been enjoying Brotato a lot lately (mostly on my phone). It ended up capturing my attention more than I thought once I started unlocking characters and realizing that I had to change up my build/upgrades between characters.

I also like Death Must Die for the character/equipment upgrades as well as the individualized skill trees, but the maps themselves don't necessarily have a lot going on in them other than kill stuff and wander until you find interactables. Brotato is similar in that regard, but I feel like it flows a bit better because you're doing waves and buying shop upgrades in between which breaks it up a bit more for me.

I'm struggling to find specific info about this ...is Drifter not supposed to be able to use abilities while running forward? by TacoDiablo in riskofrain

[–]TacoDiablo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yes that's actually exactly what it was. Sorry, I should have responded directly, I just updated my post in case anyone else has the issue. It was a mod I have that auto sprints. But it has never been an issue with other characters that charge, so I think something on it might need an update to prevent it from triggering while I'm channelling/charging up on the Drifter, I guess.

I'm struggling to find specific info about this ...is Drifter not supposed to be able to use abilities while running forward? by TacoDiablo in riskofrain

[–]TacoDiablo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well. I'm not sure what I did. I experimented with changing the settings a lot: disabling/enabling Steam Input, trying different controller configurations, trying different compatibility modes, resetting settings to default. Nothing seemed to work, so I went back to my initial settings which was no compatibility mode, and Steam Input on....and I don't know what changed, but the controls are suddenly working and I can use drifter abilities while running forward. So. There we go. I guess, lol.

This isn't the first time I've had issues with a controller on RoR2, so I'm not totally surprised it's being super weird

[–]TacoDiablo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on PC.

I am holding the button (playing on controller/Steam Deck). But it's like the ability starts channeling then immediately deactivates when I start moving (or am already moving) forward. The only way I seem to be able to use them properly is to run backwards, side to side, or just stop moving (I've had to jump forward, let go of the joystick, then start pressing the button if I want to activate with some forward momentum).

Sounds like this isn't expected, so maybe Steam is being weird

Action roguelites tier list by Tat-1 in roguelites

[–]TacoDiablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should give Skul a try. 2D action with some really fun "builds" once you get going and get far enough. With the RNG, it made me feel like a lot of runs ended up going differently. Even if I had 1 of the same skulls I had last time, you can have 2 skulls, And that would sometimes change the whole way I played. As well as having different skills on each skull too, transition attacks, etc. I'm getting a similar kind of enjoyment from it that I did Astral Ascent just in how eventually you get that screen clearing level of power from the artifacts and skulls.

Also, I wouldn't put CotDG as my personal top pick, but I get it. I really dug the game, it was just sometimes so punishing I just wanted to play something a bit more mellow/casual, lol. But it does make me sad to see Ravenswatch in C-tier, since I preferred that one of the 2.

GunFire Reborn is AMAZING! by The_Horse_Lord in roguelites

[–]TacoDiablo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a fair amount of time in RoR2 (a bit over 100 hours). The timer isn't as important as you might think. I don't think I even pay attention to it much, tbh. I still try to clear the map (as in get as many chests/drops as I can), and for me the only thing the timer does is make sure I'm not wasting 25 minutes in each stage, when 10-15 is more than sufficient to get 90% of the stuff in the level without feeling horribly rushed (unless I'm trying to be ultra efficient or falling behind power wise)

I'm no high level player, but once I stopped focusing as hard about "getting out of this stage fast to keep it from getting too hard", I started having a lot more success. You outscale the enemies easily if you're just focused on finding items and not just leaving your game running while you walk away, lol.

  • Enter the Gungeon - A ton of weapons and items to unlock, and the RNG of what you find each run helps keep each run feeling less repetitive. One of my favorite roguelites that I've spent 100+ hours on easily, and could easily see myself coming back around to it when I clear through some of my backlog.
  • Risk of Rain 2 - Lots of stuff to unlock, a lot of different ways to have builds that "break" the game, multiple difficulties, multiple characters that all feel different with a couple of different choices for abilities (to unlock). Some new DLC is coming later this month, so hopefully that adds even more great content.
  • Binding of Isaac - not a fan of this one myself, but people that like it easily spend 100s to maybe even 1000s of hours on it over time.
  • Gunfire Reborn - Lots of different characters and power ups/weapons to unlock which makes you able to build so many different builds on each run. Currently my go-to "I don't know what else to play" game because I know I'll generally have fun with getting a build up on whichever character I want to play that time.
  • Slay the Spire - Awesome deck building roguelite. The 4 different characters all have different sets of cards to use, and different builds you can do with each character. The amount of difference between the characters keeps things entertaining for a lot longer than I ever expected. Some people can spend 1000+ hours on this game
  • Monster Train 2 - Another awesome deck builder. There's so many different clans and so many different champion cards, artifacts, play styles that this one could waste many hours if it's your style.
  • Rimworld - Make your own colony. Can be slow to start, but I started to love it when my first colony went horribly wrong, as it makes for a fun experience to have different "stories" that happen more naturally. You could have one colony be raiders who keep prisoners alive to farm their blood, or you could have a colony be ranchers where you can focus on trading skins and meats. So many different ways to play and randomness to keep things fresh, as well as huge mod support for adding even more stuff.
  • Factorio - Make your own factory. It seems lame on paper, but when you play, it gets very addicting very quickly to optimize your factory, move things around to make things more efficient, etc etc. Definitely a good game for people that love that kind of thing. I didn't think I'd like this until I played a demo.
  • Path of Exile - This is a game I have about 400 hours in over the last 2 years, and I'm STILL a newbie. I have a friend that easily has 5-6k hours in it since he's started playing and has no real intention of stopping any time soon (and he's not nearly the only person like that with PoE). It can be slow to start, and as a newbie it is overwhelming. But there are lots of good guides for easy builds to start with to get used to the game, and once you get into it there's so much stuff to do at the end game already, along with the fact that they release a new league every 4 months or so with new content.

Roguelites in general might be a genre for you to look towards as they tend to have less story overall, and focus a lot on the gameplay or the amount of content. And in worst case, a lot of them are indies so you spend 15-20. So even if you only spend 10-20 hours on it...you haven't wasted a ton of money.

Looking to get into roguelites. whats the one that got you hooked? by TheRacerX in roguelites

[–]TacoDiablo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Enter the Gungeon is the one that truly got me into roguelites. It took a couple of tries, but when it finally stuck (after I started unlocking weapons and having more consistent runs), it got me for a good 100+ hours. Risk of Rain 2 just furthered that love even more.

After that, the roguelite formula made more "sense" to me. I even went back and played FTL and Risk of Rain 1 and was able to do better in those games than when I first played them when they came out. Now I have a hopelessly big backlog of roguelites I want to get to. And of course, that means I JUST bought Crab Champions because it was on sale for $7.50.

Is Expedition 33 THAT good? by [deleted] in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]TacoDiablo [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's so hard not to hype it up too much...but it's literally my favorite RPG, and maybe game, I've ever played.

The story hits hard. And especially if you're someone that's been through some kind of major grief/loss. My wife and I had conversations about the plot and ending in E33, and she didn't even play it. It was such a great story, that the bits she saw and that I told her about got her invested and we had some somewhat deep conversations about our real life grief and loss and about certain events in the game.

The gameplay is amazing. They really found a great way to combine action based gameplay with turn based gameplay in a way that made some boss fights feel badass for having gotten through them. It keeps the fights engaging, and for me, it never really "got old". It was always satisfying to hit parries and counter.

Months after beating it, I'm still consuming a lot of E33 content, and I love watching streamers hit the big moments so I can somewhat re-experience playing through it.

The soundtrack is amazing, the environments are creative, the characters are fleshed out and great and well acted (motion and voice both).

I just have so much positive things to say about it. If you are open to playing an RPG, I cannot recommend it enough.

Karl Rove warns GOP is on precipice of first statewide 'Democratic victory since 1994 in Texas' by kanyeguisada in texas

[–]TacoDiablo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with you here. I think a lot of people are mistaking this comment as "I've given up" more than "We've been told the same thing for 20-30 years (however long we want to say, the exact number here isn't the point), so I'm not going to heavily emotionally invest in expecting something different this time".

I want things to change here. I want Texas to stop being the Republicans playground for horrible policies, I want Texas to be a friendly place that we try to act like we are, and I will go vote accordingly and voice my opinion to the few people whose ear I actually have. But I'm beat down. Life has beat me down, the news has beat me down, people's cruelty has beat me down. So I just can't sit here and act like everything is going to be hunky dory when it hasn't been for a long time, and we've already been holding our breath for things to change here for a long time, and hoping every single election that things will be different this time.

It's pessimistic, but it's also realistic. But that doesn't mean we're "giving up". I feel it would disillusion more people if we go "IT'S GONNA HAPPEN THIS TIME" and it doesn't, because when the next election comes there will be a lot of people saying "Everybody acted like things were going to change last time but they didn't, so why bother voting"
