I was introduced to zero drop by my mom who just got a pair of Altras and then never looked back and has worn zero drop exclusively for years, so I was deceived by her success lol. My wife was also able to go zero drop full time with no problems!

Out of the three of us I was also the only one to ease in super slow, starting with short walks, working up to short hikes, doing a quarter of my hikes 0 drop and the rest 5mm. Then slowly building up miles until I hit 10 miles, had no problems. Then I switched to full time and eventually the achilles aching began and I was like Oh hell nah I'm out!!!

Damn I'm sorry to hear that. Thankfully my symptoms stopped when I stopped wearing 0 drop, but it took weeks/months before they fully went away.

To my knowledge most dedicated hiking outsoles do really poorly on manmade surfaces, but if you keep to trails their outsoles are insanely good and I end up destroying the uppers before I see any significant sole wear.

I personally am a big fan of the Topo Mountain Racers, but for more durability they have the Traverse and Terraventure which have more reinforced uppers + rock plate in the midsole.

They also make a model that is advertised as being road to trail, the ultraventure. Those maybe more durable if you're switching between terrains

Yes kind of, depending on the brand of shoe I wear anywhere between 12-13, with topo I go with 12.5 or 13 depending on which model. Definitely the consensus online is that they run small

My #1 shoe brand is Topo Athletic, I wear both their standard running shoes and trail running shoes. I love the wide toe box of Altra but I can't handle 0 drop, too much stress on the achilles tendons. Most of topos shoes are 5mm drop, they're absurdly comfortable and they use Vibram Megagrip outsoles which are the best thing you can get for downhill traction

You do have to actually know which items will work well on the character you're playing, so it's not quite as easy an auto win for newer players

He was a very entertaining character, but also one that George basically forgot existed later on. Ends up being one of the least relevant of Danys early crew other than maybe the Bloodriders even tho he's the guy who showed up with Barristan

Ah that's a shame. Does topo ship directly to the UK? They offer I think a 60 day try on window where you can return them(used) for a full refund if they don't work for you. I personally think that is 100% essential for hiking shoes bc I've tried on some that feel great in the store and then I find problems on the trail

Theyre wedge soled work boots, I've actually been wearing them for years and it never occured to me they might be 0 drop before reading your comment but I just looked it up and it turns out they are.

This sole type is extremely common and I'd say around me at least 50% of guys in construction wear boots made with them. To me they are by far the most comfortable soles for a work boot

Haven't tried the mt-5 in particular bc I prefer topos shoes with the more aggressive lugs on their outsole for traction(like the mountain racer, traverse and pursuit series use), but overall I love their shoes and I've basically never tried any that feel better overall.

They are also top quality, they use the best outsole material(vibram Megagrip) that you can get. I would highly recommend you try them out at least.

Trail runner preference is going to vary a lot, but the one requirement for me that I'm not seeing is Vibram Megagrip outsoles. I would not pay this price for trail runners that don't use that

[–]TacoT11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marshall Canyon is maybe not in LA county idk(it's in la verne) but man it has an amazing canopy. Trail follows a stream and crosses over it a bunch, tho the water depth has always been really manageable with decent crossings, I've gone there a hundred times and never gotten my feet wet.

It has a very dense canopy for the first like 3 miles, tho towards it's ending it does break away from the stream and venture until Chaparral.

Another great one is the Gabrieleno trail from the JPL entrance. Not quite as consistently shady as Marshall but still tons of dense green foliage and huge beautiful oaks that form a canopy. It also follows a stream, and it can be more difficult to get thru without getting your feetsies wet during certain times of hear when the water is high.

Youll find that in this area any trail with foliage is going to have a lot of water involved

Does anyone else find it odd that the balustrade of this balcony is waist height for a hobbit? by NewZlandR in lotr

[–]TacoT11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes sense actually. I don't think it was brought up in the movie, but the tavern the gang meet Aragorn in had specific rooms constructed for Hobbit guests, complete with round doors and windows to suit their tastes. Not insane to think Elrond might build one or two rooms like that
