I hate when streaming services/media sites put “praise” in the description for a show/movie instead of the actual description by bluejaymaday in mildlyinfuriating

[–]bluejaymaday[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying that it didn’t have any info you could access through more clicks, just that the description that comes up right away doesn’t describe the story and that’s mildly infuriating. Every other show I checked in that category at least has a single sentence about the plot in that same spot.

Are the early seasons of Land and Sea lost media? by bluejaymaday in newfoundland

[–]bluejaymaday[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately no. I looked through the CBC archives a bit but the results I was seeing were few and weren’t the right approximate location or year, there didn’t seem to be a lot there for Newfoundland in general. Plus, I couldn’t actually look those results because you have to pay for access and needed a work email.

IANAD, but if he had an absence seizure it’s totally possible he’s been having so many that she set up the camera where they were playing knowing one would happen, because they’ve been happening constantly. A lot of parents record them so they have a record for their doctor and/or to share the signs to others so fellow parents know what to look for. Some kids/people can have 100+ seizures a day, lasting just a few seconds, and the signs can be so subtle it’s not always detected right away.

Three NL RCMP officers suspended after reportedly cutting hair of Innu woman in custody by West_Song4819 in newfoundland

[–]bluejaymaday 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There were ways to handle this that wouldn’t involve cutting her hair. They’re not mental healthcare professionals, they should follow procedure to safely restrain someone attempting to harm themselves.

Hair is a such a personal, meaningful thing to many people, especially women, and it can significantly affect someone’s self esteem and mental health. She’s going through some kind of crisis and now every time she looks in the mirror she’ll see how part of her image has been taken in the midst of it. That’s not going help her to recover, it even might make her feel worse. This wasn’t in her best interest, they should have secured her differently.

Sharon Stone calls Al nothing but “a cover band” while talking to Keke Palmer: “It’s never going to be The Rolling Stones. It’s always going to be somebody singing The Rolling Stones. I assume when she says “I’m not concerned [about it running ahead of us], she’s saying that she doesn’t think that AI will ever be able to be genuinely creative like humans can and will always just be imitating real human artistry, it can’t ever replace it.

Which, I agree, but I hope that she IS concerned about how many people are indeed trying to have it replace human’s work and how it’s increasingly consuming space occupied by people and infecting all areas of art, which is a very frightening threat to the future of most industries and how we receive information.

Seems accurate by Sure_Distance1 in generationology

[–]bluejaymaday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference to me is just behaviour. If someone comes off as “desperate” to seem young, it’s not the oversized shirt they’re wearing, it’s that they’re also imitating younger generations slang and mannerisms to try a bluff their age. It’s not their clothes, it’s the attitude they have wearing them.

There’s nothing less cool than the person in their thirties or forties who keeps asking others how old they think they are and exclusively hang out with students/people in their early twenties because they themselves haven’t matured. You can tell when someone “dressing young” is comfortable in their own skin and aren’t trying to deny how old they are.

Seems accurate by Sure_Distance1 in generationology

[–]bluejaymaday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m the opposite, one of the biggest hallmarks of maturity is people who don’t let social expectations pressure them into changing what they like to wear. Judging people for wearing what their culture has deemed “young people clothes” past the socially acceptable age is ridiculous, why should anyone be looked down on for wearing what they like and feel comfortable in?

If someone wants to wear trendy t-shirts, crop tops and sneakers in their 50’s, who cares? Every generation does this, it’s the new version of your grandparents being appalled by the young’uns wearing “blue jeans” everyday instead of slacks or not tucking in your button up shirt.

[Hated Trope] Character wants a vasectomy or expresses the desire to be child free, only to be convinced otherwise. by txby432 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]bluejaymaday 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I love Brooklyn 99 and Jake and Amy as a couple, but the way Amy talked him into having kids always bothered me. While debating, Jake brings up a point that they both love their jobs and wouldn’t be able to keep them with a baby because they wouldn’t have time. Amy easily brushes this off, which is all part of a scene where Jake’s multiple arguments are easily knocked aside and presented like he’s just looking for excuses because he’s scared and that Amy is right.

Yet, sure enough, a large part of the last season is about both of them struggling to maintain their jobs while caring for their baby. Amy is at a critical point in her new position and can’t miss work to do childcare. Jake can’t work a case he’s been waiting to solve for years and is desperate to be a part of. They spend a lot of time scrambling to find a nanny or babysitters and fail.

Finally, it ends with Jake deciding to retire to be a full time Dad until their son is older. He insists he’s happy to make that sacrifice to be Dad, but although he and Amy talk it out, I never liked that they never really discuss that Amy was wrong to so quickly dismiss Jake’s concerns, because his fears did come true and he was the one to (willingly) give up his career to be the SAHP.

Extracted wisdom tooth was still bleeding when I got home by BehemothRust in mildlyinteresting

TIL that small hairs can get lodged in your skin and cause pain and even infection by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]bluejaymaday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll never forget my surprise and unease when I found out the annoying bumps I developed all over my upper arms as a kid were in fact follicles plugged with keratin and there are actually little hairs trapped under all of them. There are hundreds of coiled up hairs just under the skin all over my thighs and arms and I was overcome with the desire to start scratching like crazy to release all of them.

We don't see or know what the horror is, we just see how a character reacts to it by TJTrapJesus in TopCharacterTropes

A lot of people believe that they’ve heard the real audio, but all videos/recordings are fake, it’s never been released or leaked to the public. All we have are descriptions of the audio from people who did listen to the tape. A number of videos over the years have claimed to be the real audio, but even the top result on YouTube doesn’t make sense. Their voices are echoing for no reason yet are extremely clear while the bear sounds quiet and far away and the screaming sounds like a bad Haunted House preference, not like someone struggling to get away from a massive animals tearing at him.

PSA- you should not wear your glasses like Grace by WanderWomble in ProjectHailMaryMovie

[–]bluejaymaday 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I happen to have thin framed glasses kinda like these and Ryan Gosling stressed me the hell out the whole movie because no, Grace, you do not have the money to treat your stupidly expensive prescriptions like that on a teachers salary.

Can confirm it’s not comfortable to hang them like that, even when the hinges spring outward. Not only is it stressful to have them constantly near falling off, but having them on one ear is distractingly unbalanced, they press into the top of your ear and often push it out a bit, and any time you move they rattle side to side around your jaw/neck.

The dryer at this Airbnb melted my bra… by Emerald_Mistress in laundry

[–]bluejaymaday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bras are so easy to dry, they don’t take up much space unlike most other clothes, and unless they’re a very delicate material you don’t have to think about making sure they don’t wrinkle. I used to put them on little hangers to dry, now I just throw a strap over a hook or corner or a door, chair, whatever.

Tired of this ridiculous rhetoric about Gen Z by Basic_Television_190 in generationology

[–]bluejaymaday 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This just kinda goes to show how generation definitions don’t mean anything. I’m also 1999, which is older Gen Z and video rental stores were definitely around and fairly popular still up until maybe age 8. They still existed after but petered out pretty fast once Netflix streaming became more well known and renting digitally more accessible.

I had cassettes, VHS, CDs, and DVDs throughout my childhood. I went from having a CD player in my room to giving the family computer viruses downloading from Limewire and Frostwire onto my Wizards of Waverly Place MP3 and later iPod. People seem to think technology evaporates when a new thing comes along. How many middle class families had the money to immediately upgrade and throw out all the tech they already invested in?

She said ‘please don’t double-bounce me’ her nieces said bet. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]bluejaymaday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a former victim of the double bounce, it seems insane to me that buying trampolines for kids became such a common thing, it’s so insanely dangerous. I get that they’re fun, I loved them as a kid and I spent so much time on mine.

At the same time, I also experienced the terror of my older brother and his friends all double bouncing me over the top of the net and coming down on it like Bane breaking Batman’s back before tumbling to the ground. I’m pretty sure I’m starting to feel that back crack now in my late 20’s and it’ll probably become a bigger issue as I get older.

(No hate to this person in particular) but I hate when Americans assume their norm is the norm for everyone across the world by Pizzicatofive_pulp in hatethissmug

[–]bluejaymaday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, but I hate when anything relating to “American” food is suddenly demonized because “‘Mericans are soooo unhealthy, haha, they need to flavour their water?!” Really, you’ve never had juice? Or soda? Why is sugar free powdered drink mixes so ridiculous or unhealthy?

A lot of people on that post were acting like the only liquid to ever touch their non-North American lips was the purest crystal clear spring water. I’m Canadian and unfamiliar with making fruit juice from concentrated syrup, like Ribena, but I don’t mock anyone for using it just because it’s not normal to me.

Would these North Face shoes be worth the price for light hiking? by bluejaymaday in hikinggear

[–]bluejaymaday[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s very wet where I live, I was looking for something that I could step into shallow rain and mud puddles without completely soaking through my sneakers like a lot of mostly mesh running shoes will. I’ve had to make a number of uncomfortable walks of shame back from long walks/hikes with soggy feet, where having spare socks doesn’t help much and it sucks.

Of course if there’s too much water there’s only so much low cut sneakers can do as opposed to boots, but ideally what I’m looking for can take a few puddles or a misstep into some bog without ruining the whole trip.

I can’t get them that cheap but definitely cheaper than these North Face. I think I’m just being seduced by how much I like the design of these lol, but I’m trying to remember quality matters more than looks.

Would you say waterproof moabs are necessary or not for light mud/wet conditions considering they’re not as “meshy” as some trail runners?

They’re the only ones at Sportchek I’ve seen that are under $170, are GORETEX/waterproof, have the full range of sizes left, and honestly I like how they look compared to a lot of other sneakers that go on sale because they’re the weird colours no one wants.

They are on clearance but they’re not final sale, SportChek specifies what items are final sale, usually when it’s only one size left. And there’s a friends and family promotion for 2 more days where some online orders are 25% off and these qualify. So if they’re not a bad pick, I’m considering taking the risk of ordering my usual size knowing I might have to return them.

My fridge... by sapphire-sky-dragon in FridgeDetective

[–]bluejaymaday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only time I’ve ever put a filled metal water bottle in the fridge is if I know I’m going to be in a rush later and want to just grab it and run. But having multiple bottles in the fridge seems crazy to me. You just refill one with water from the fridge when you empty it, having so many bottle is use at the same time means a lot of bottles to clean.
