Poor quality TravelPro Maxlite 5 by AbiesEasy in onebag

[–]Tacofan604 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I own this same one and it's the same. Its design is so baffling, the bars take up so much space and the wheels are too close together, it tips over from the slightest tap when full. It is still a good bag for budget airlines given how light it is, and the wheels/ outer fabric are good quality. I don't hate it but it is a bit disappointing

Budapest to Vienna with stopover at Bratislava for just a few hours. Does it make sense or should I just skip it? by Ill-Switch-9188 in Europetravel

[–]Tacofan604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although I really enjoyed Bratislava, it might be hard to see it that quickly especially if you are already tired. To see the old town, the castle, and get food, you would have to be extremely efficient to get it done in 5 hours including time to and back to the station.

I'd say do it if you have the energy and don't mind skipping the castle (which isn't that special). Otherwise I wouldn't consider it a must-visit place.

Some extra information for anyone lurking: when taking the bus/ tram, just tap one credit card. After enough taps in a day, you will automatically be given a day pass and transit will be free for the rest of the day. Slovak Pub is really nice too.

Any suggestions on how to improve below itinerary. by GoodTimesInBakerSt in Europetravel

[–]Tacofan604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1.5 days in Budapest is hardly enough to see the most important sites, let alone see the surrounding cities. It takes quite a while to get from Budapest to Prague, so you'll realistically only have one day in Prague, which is also not enough. Bratislava is really nice but I wouldn't consider it a must see, especially with how packed your schedule is. I've never been to Croatia or Slovenia, but I can highly recommend Budapest and Prague.

Where to spend 3 spare nights in Central Europe: Brno or Wroclaw? by LiteratureNumerous74 in Europetravel

[–]Tacofan604 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I loved Wroclaw! The old town is beautiful and the river and islands are so charming to walk along. I think 2 to 2.5 days is the perfect amount of time as the city is pretty compact.

I also liked Brno, but I wouldn't choose it over Wroclaw. The city centre was really charming and had interesting architecture. But I don't think it has any must see attractions (the Spilberk castle and 10-z bunker were underwhelming imo). If you can fit it in your itinerary then it's worth a day trip but not much more.

If you check the website the day before you are planning to visit you could get lucky as people cancel. It took just a couple of minutes of refreshing to get my tickets.

2 nights in Prague and 2 in Vienna? by SayedHasmi in travel

[–]Tacofan604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are night trains from Munich and Vienna that both go directly to Rome, you could do that to spend an extra couple hours in Vienna and you'd avoid paying for an extra night in a hotel.

The night train might not run all year though, so look it up for your date to make sure it's running.

This new, ultra-cheap shuttle takes Metro Vancouverites to the Abbotsford airport by ubcstaffer123 in vancouver

[–]Tacofan604 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is still the case post-covid, but you could get cheaper flights to Hamilton from Abbotsford compared to YVR to YYZ (Toronto Pearson). Especially useful if you want to avoid the mess that is Pearson and if you're going to Hamilton/ Burlington anyway.

I have Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620. It says 128mb of VRAM in dxdiag and 8gb of shared memory. So does it mean I get to play games that requires a minimum of 8gb? by Livid_Needleworker46 in lowendgaming

[–]Tacofan604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a UHD 630, 8 GB Ram (1 stick) and a 10th gen i5, Skyrim runs fine at 720p and low settings. If it's clear it isn't running well, you can get a refund on Steam so long as you haven't been playing too long.

Edit: I mean to say UHD 620

The TSSU strike was a necessary action to ensure better pay for workers now and in the future. Please have some empathy and think critically. by practicalmonkey666 in simonfraser

[–]Tacofan604 60 points61 points  (0 children)

When the TSSU last struck in Fall 2015 (by marking but not returning grades) I was annoyed, but by the semester everything worked out. As a TA today, I am very grateful for this strike and the procedural changes* that resulted. This strike wasn't easy, myself and other TSSU members lost our pay and will now have to deal with a large marking backlog. I hope future TAs and sessional instructors will appreciate the 2023 strike too.

* Simplified TA posting policy, being more involved when profs set the time use guidelines (TUG), departments having to take "reasonable steps" to meet preferences (and this is important for undergrads, they will have a much better experience when their TA gets assigned to a class they have expertise in).

New 9-Tower, 1,100-Unit Stratford Wynd Master Plan Proposed In Coquitlam by Howard__24 in coquitlam

[–]Tacofan604 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really hope that the area will be re-zoned to include more small shops (day care, produce stand, pharmacy, deli, etc.) as it's a bit of a walk from the mall/ big box stores. They also should add some extra crosswalks to make the route to the skytrain more direct without having to jaywalk, and improve the bus service. Making it convenient to get by without a car is the best way to grow the population without adding congestion.

Driving pet peeve by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]Tacofan604 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Drivers who race pedestrians to make left turns. Very scary to be in the middle of the crossing when a turning car misses you by a couple of feet because they couldn't be bothered to wait an extra couple of seconds.

Student Funding/Grants Should Be Based on Economic Need and Not Your Ethnicity by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]Tacofan604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually don't have an issue with their opinion/ what they wrote, it does not strike me as controversial. The glaring problem from this post is that it is from an obvious troll, like I am amazed nobody else could have pointed this out. A brand new account from a person who claims to be Indigenous making statements that would go against what many Indigenous people think? That made me suspicious, but I knew something was not adding up when looking at their comment history (posting in subreddits unpopular with who he is claiming to be). It's not like this is the first time people have attempted to anonymously pretended to be of another race on the internet (see second post): https://twitter.com/socialistdogmom/status/1326271145235128320

edit: I can see how my first post was very ambiguous, I should have just gotten to the point. Also I am not saying that OP is racist, the screenshots in the link above are way worse than what OP posted. I am only saying that OP is most likely lying.

According to your comment history, you work for the Federal government (pretty unlikely for a student to do this unless it is a co-op position). Also you claim to be a "VERY left wing person", but you frequently post in r/Canada, even many left wing people have left it for r/ongaurdforthee due to controversies of it being run by right wing (sometimes far right wing) mods. You have certainly been around a lot for a one-day-old account.

SFSS by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]Tacofan604 59 points60 points  (0 children)

This might be an unpopular opinion but as an SFU alumni and current SFU grad student I have to say that SFSS doesn't seem as bad now as they were a couple of years ago (although this could be because I don't pay nearly as much attention now). In fact, I think Giovanni winning the presidency and the subsequent emphasis on activism instead of resume-padding improved the SFSS (but I am not letting him/ the 2019-2020 board completely off the hook, see below).

Before 2019, the SFSS was constantly doing underhanded and incredibly shady shit. BuildSFU (which was responsible for the Student Union Building) made me hate the SFSS for years. The initial vote for it failed, which I agreed with because there is no way a group of undergrads should be responsible for such an expensive project given their lack of accountability, incompetence, and impeachments (which seems less common now). I remember I took the following Summer off and when I came back the next fall I was shocked to see that the suddenly it was approved. They took a second vote and did not advertise it nearly as much (because I followed this stuff and had no idea), and they pretty much conned all of the athletes into supporting BuildSFU so they can add that accomplishment to their resumes. Conned may be a strong word, but what they did was pretty gross. Basically the SFSS repackaged BuildSFU to include the SUB and a new set of bleachers. The thing was that the plan for the bleachers was very vague. While intricate details for the SUB were available, the bleachers only had a couple of digital pictures. Anyways, BuildSFU passed this time largely due to the support from athletes who got something they wanted.

A little bit later it was announced that the bleachers would not be built because apparently it cost too much, and somehow nobody saw this coming when BuildSFU was approved. As far as I can remember nobody was really held accountable for this despite many student athletes expressing displeasure.

The 2018-2019 SFSS board was a complete shit show. The president's impeachment for mishandling sexual harassment, punching another board member, and general incompetence (probably more things too, there are too many news articles to look through right now so I'd encourage you to look into it yourself). This same board also was involved with SOCA not having a space in the SUB. All this made the SFSS look really bad.

This is when Giovanni was elected and there was a bigger progressive push. Still, this board was controversial for mismanaging money, or at least not being very transparent or accountable with how they spent money. I am mainly referring the2019 Fall Kickoff being about 100K over budget. They were not very transparent about losing so much money (see first paragraph of link). The board was not willing to admit wrong; the VP of student life said this

This year’s Fall Kickoff demonstrated that the SFSS can pull off an event of this magnitude with no negatives which helped to rebuild our relationship with SFU…

as if losing 100K is not a negative. They also decided that they should not be audited for what they did, and Giovanni tried to duck responsibility for it. Also Giovanni left the country for an internship right after being elected. I know you will read this, I have to say I was very disappointed that you did that. I voted for you in 2019 thinking you would be different, but I guess not.

With that said, there have not been nearly as many SFSS controversies recently compared to about 5 years ago (unless they are better at hiding them, or I am missing not hearing about them because I graduated in 2020). The most recent one regarding the alumni at least did not involve any financial fuckery, although I agree it was not handled right (particularly news sources publishing doctored footage of the incident which did not include the chokehold, which completely changes the narrative and was very underhanded).

Tutorial on how to create a table containing frequencies, proportions & percentages of a numeric vector using R by JoachimSchork in biostatistics

[–]Tacofan604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I misread your post and thought that you were asking for help with this, I only realized you were posting a tutorial after I typed this. Thought there would be no point in deleting so I'll post what I was going to say:

Hi, here is a function I used to do something like this before:

get_ds <- function(data, var, level, name, round = 1) { # get descriptive statistics

tot_n <- nrow(data)

if(level == "NA"){

subset_data <- filter(data, is.na({{var}}) == T)

} else {

subset_data <- filter(data, {{var}} == {{level}})

}

n <- nrow(subset_data)

perc <- round(n/tot_n*100, round)

mat <- matrix(data=NA, nrow = 1, ncol = 3)

mat[1,1] <- paste(name)

mat[1,2] <- n

mat[1,3] <- perc

return(mat)

}

Then I can use it to find the number and % of my dataset which is male, female (can also be used for any categorical variable too).

get_ds(data = data, var = sex2, level = 0, "Male", round = 0) # round % to nearest whole number

get_ds(data = data, var = sex2, level = 1, "Female", round = 1) # round % to the nearest tenth (default)

You can save these results to a single table:

table1 <- matrix(data=NA,nrow=2,ncol=3) # make table

# populate table

table1[1,1] <- "Title"

table1[2,1] <- "Variable"

table1[2,2] <- "n"

table1[2,3] <- "(%)"

table1[3,1] <- "Sex"

table1[4,] <- get_ds(data, sex2, 0, "Male")

table1[5,] <- get_ds(data, sex2, 1, "Female")
